Sharks not overly concerned about McLeod

While the Sharks are in pretty good shape after their opening win over the Cheetahs, scrumhalf Charl McLeod – a key player – is a slight injury concern ahead of this weekend’s game against the Blues.

McLeod picked up a calf injury with about 10 minutes to go on Saturday and is hobbling a little this morning. The Sharks coaches, though, are not too concerned about the injury and are reasonably confident that he’ll shake it off in time for Saturday’s crunch game. He’ll be assessed further at training this afternoon, at which stage we’ll know more.

Further good news for the Sharks is that captain John Smit and Springbok winger JP Pietersen should also be fit for selection this weekend, along with lock Ross Skeate.

  • Good news regarding JP Pietersen and John Smit.

Not sure how Skeate will fit into the mix, probably onto the bench in place of Bresler?

JPP most likely to replace Odwa I suppose?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 1) : I heard a funny rumour that the Sharks wanted to put Skeate on a conditioning program that would see him only considered after they return from tour. Not sure if that’s true…

I would pick him ahead of Bresler, but maybe I’m biased.

I thought Odwa was our best back on the day, so it would be a pity to drop him, but JP is definitely more of an attacking threat. Tough call

  • @robdylan (Comment 2) :

Where is Mostert in his conditioning? I would like to see him come off the bench and play a few minutes.

Dropping Odwa would be tough, but against the Blues backs, I’d go for JPP for his defence..

  • Odwa to replace Adi on the bench hopefully, and Bresler, Mostert and Sykes to fight it out for a place on the bench. Our lock cover is really looking good. Would like to see Burden keep a place on the bench, but more than likely would drop out of 22. (He deserves more game time this season.)

73rd min sharks up 12 points penalty sharks go for posts 40 odd meters out.

75th min sharks up 12 points. pen goes for penalty 35 meters out.

richard you argued that 12 points wasn’t a big enough buffer for stefan to risk a try. yet he was happy to risk a 5 point buffer. kak captaincy.

And Hoffman is in the same situation as JLP in many respects, playing second fiddle, rather frowned on by those who love the people they are “understudying” for and probably desperate to prove to the world that they can cut the mustard. It’s going to be a loooonnnngggg season! And I don’t envy Plum the job of juggling!

Which he will do this tourney, of even could this Saturday. I just feel against the Blues we need McLeod, cause he has played the whold cc there and was outstanding.

Agree for sure we gonna need McLeod this week. Especially against a great Blues team. Yes of course we need Hoffman as well. McLeod will need a rest sometime as this tourney is very long this year. Also if McLeod is injured. Really hope not for this Saturday though. Those Blues played brilliant in the 2nd half against the Saders.

Anyhow I am off. Catch up tomorrow.

  • For the record I have 2 reasons for defending Hoffmann: 1. He did an interview with Rob at the end of last year and thus knows of the site and could have been reading comments here and I’m guessing that Sharks fans being worried about him being in the team will not help his confidence. 2. I genuinely believe he is a good player who will do well for the Sharks and as fans, we need to back him.
