Opportunity knocking

In a loan deal that can only be described as brilliant, the Sharks and the Stormers are apparently in talks to do a loan deal where Tim Whitehead, the Stormers centre, would come to the Sharks in return for Kyle Cooper, the Sharks hooker, going down to the Cape.

According to our sources, the deal was set to go through when Tim Whitehead changed his mind and decided to stick with the Stormers who have three world class centres already, and will most likely only play Vodacom Cup.

The opportunity for both these exciting young players to play Super Rugby and gain a wealth of experience might be only a simple signature away, let’s hope the players can realise this and get on board.

  • Yeah, Tim Whitehead is a special talent, and so is Kyle Cooper, we have three hookers in his way, and we could do with some extra depth in centre. I like this too…

Whitehead needs to realise Bosch is ahead of him in the hierarchy.

  • Very good idea….I hope this would happen. It could only benefit both teams and give the players some valuable exposure.

Just make sure Kyle’s contract is watertight before he goes. Not so good perhaps for the Vodacom cup teams

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 3) : Doesn’t make sense for Whitehead to come to the Sharks, he’d be in the same place as he is in the Stormers, we have Meyer Bosman, JLP, Lambie and Riaan Swanepoel covering inside centre. He’d be lower down in the pecking order than he is at the Stormers. Unless he wants to come over for a holiday…

    I disagree with that..

He will almost certainly come onto the bench to cover the current centre pairing of Stef and Bosman. JLP will also be in as cover..

Swannie and Adi can then prove their fitness in the Vodacom Cup..

@Richard Ferguson (Comment 12) : I just can’t see him fitting on the bench for us. I’d rather call Mark Richards up for cover. Then we’re giving our own guys experience instead of strengthening WP. Remember that Gary Botha started at the Sharks as a loan player in a similar deal.

  • @Talent (Comment 14) : I’m not disputing the fact that Kyle Cooper is a special talent. Maybe we should loan him to the Stormers with an airtight contract so they can’t sign him but pass on Whitehead.

I think we should look at improving our own guys’ experience (they’re more than capable of making the shift up) rather than bringing in players from another union and improving the other union’s players.

I like the concept of having him loaned out, because he will do well to get valuable Super experience – then he can be drafted into the senior team with ease next or season or so… I like Burden as a hooker though, although Kyle is a harder more abrasive kind of player which bodes well for long term.

  • Yes, to lose Cooper would be criminal; he is one for our future – and we need to look after him. For him to be on loan is a good thing – gain the experience and get the confidence to play premier rugby. BUT to lose him would be a cruel blow to us, how is Bismarck’s contract looking, when does that expire? I can’t see John Smit here as a player after the RWC, that would leave Bismarck and Burden, we need Kyle.

Pity Whitehead can’t see the benefits. I still think the Sharks should look at Johann Sadie. We saw what that little Brumbies centre Coleman did over the weekend. Sadie could offer the Sharks the same kind of midfield punch.

Now add a young firebrand like kyle cooper in the mix..!his game at hooker will develop more (in all its technical aspects @cheetahs).and if he plays for a team that might have to dig deeper mentally and play harder _each player body-on-the-line and not shirking their duty, but rather going beyond it- to ensure the success of the team, then I would def send him to cheetahs!those values are all-important.

    MOSTLY a poor 9/10 combo

Overall player manage is piss-poor. Senior Boks will be played into the ground as has become the norm under Coetzee, squad depth untested.

The Stormers have not moved forward an inch since 2010. And the result will be the same as the Boks standing still after a great 2009 where other teams caught up quickly and they are now left behind.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 81) :

Nope, simply don’t rate their chances at all.

The Stormers, like the Bulls, are mainly made up of Boks whose only interest in 2011 will be to be fit for the RWC, after which, they are gone (most of them).

The only difference is, the Bulls experience in closing out games and winning tournaments will see them still end in the top 2 of the local conference.

  • @bergshark (Comment 80) : Yeah Bergshark. It would be great to see you and all the other Sharksworld guys up at my old school Kearsney on 21/23/25 April this year. It’s going to be an awesome tournament. All the schools attending play good rugby but for those looking to see the cream of the crop we have the 2010 SA no.1 ranked team, the 2010 Beeld Trofee winners, the 2010 WP premier league no.1 team and our own 2010 KZN no.1 ranked team as well. It’s going to be too good.

Ok now that you brought it up.
How is it that the Stormers / WP scrum has so little back up – this asked considering that the Stormers have both Proudfoot and Rassie in the system. I refuse to believe that those 2 dont see the glaring shortage of what they have and I also cant believe that they havent tried to rectify it. Do you think Im being presumptious or do you think they really believe they have the personell for the job.

  • @Salmonoid (Comment 91) :

Well the answer is quite simple.

Like any team they are desperate for a major trophy. They are just going about it in an arsed about way.

The belief it seems is that you can ‘buy’ success, and although the concept is not wrong, it all depends on WHO you buy and when.

If you are going to spend millions buying superstars like Jaque Fourie, Bryan Habana and Jean de Villiers (who they bought back) it leaves you with little cash to buy players who are supposed to get the ball to those guys…

Rugby has changed a lot over the years, but one fundamental thing will never change, success in rugby is built around a dominant tight 5 – plain and simple.

Over the last 10 years I can count on one hand which tight 5 players within the WP setup I rated.

Buying players like Habs, Mossie, etc is brilliant for you PR as a union, but it won’t do shit for your success on the field if you do not take care of the basics first.

Add to this piss-poor management of players within the setup which saw WP lose many talented youngsters including Francois Hougaard, Hoffman and Visser just to name 3 in the last 3 years, and you get a basic idea of where the problem here lies.

WP claims to have an academy, and although in principle they do, their youth development is amongst, if not, the poorest in SA. The person tasked with talent identification and development seems to be Rassie Erasmus, and the fact that he is affectionately known as ‘Honest’ Rassie should tell you a great deal about promises he makes (to players) and what he delivers.

The only other name I ever came across in the last 5 years tasked with spotting talent in WP rugby structures or outside of them, is a guy called Hanekom – yeah I don’t know who the hell he is either but apparently played prop at some stage of his life.

Compare that to someone like Ian Schwartz from the Bulls who manages and spots current and future talent at the Bulls, and WP’s problems become glaringly obvious.

  • Oh and then I am not even touching on the fact that you need coaches with balls to make the tough calls and back their instincts.

Coetzee is a great guy, liked and respected by everyone including myself and is a brilliant manager and an asset to any team. But I would personally love to see a no-nonsense head coach take over with Allister moving into more of a management role. Managing coaches if you will, Rassie’s current position, with Rassie playing director.

  • @Morné (Comment 99) : @Salmonoid (Comment 94) : Paarlbok made a comment a while ago that W/Cape local boy prop Rossouw de Klerk went to the Bulls after school because there is a perception that your chances of being a top notch tight forward are dramatically improved by being in the Bulls system. If this is/was a common view held by youngsters and their parents, I can understand why they have a gap in their squad now. But Malherbe and Kitshoff are quite possibly the 2 best junior props in SA at the moment so the tide may be turning.

Thats much of what I thought the situation was. Its also the reason I specifically put in Proudfoot and Rassies name in there, purely because they are forwards and must be crying out for the players that will secure that truely amazing backline good ball to do their magic with.
Are the coffers effectively close to being nearly bare then.

He has already shown he can cut it in senior rugby…can cover 10 too…not that we will need him at 10. Whitehead?…would rather give someone like Trompie P a chance or Piet Lindeque…if Paul Jordaan was 20 i would give him a run, but he only just out of school…hopfully he gets a run during CC this year. Will be happy to see Deysel back soon…hopefully he is 100%. Also keen to see M Coetzee, Kleinhans and Ojiambo/Adonga this weekend for XV…gonna be shweeet!

  • @bergshark (Comment 123) : Rocket was a good scrummie, but I personally think that there was a rift with him, I feel that he thought of himself too much as an individual and less of a team man, I rate distribution scrumhalves far more than those in the Rocket mould, Rory is a great rugby player, but I don’t think he fitted into The Sharks ethos and gameplan. Rather develop the younger guys like Cronje, and build up Hoffman’s experience and skill set. Hoff has the ability, that cannot be doubted… All things take time, like developing quality backup. Near the end of Rocket’s time I always became nervous when he came on, he placed too much emphasis on his own ability and usually cost the team points, momentum, territory etc, percentage game made Rory a slight liability. Game breakers are one thing, and percentage players another…

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 130) : The rise of consistent Sharks results are directly linked to the half back emergence of Charl and Pat – not a coincidence – Charl MacLeod is The Sharks MVP… He makes players like Beast, Deysel, Bismarck, Alberts gain the momentum, and thats how we play – momentum rugby. Kyle Cooper is another momentum rugby player and the sooner he gets Super experience the better for The Sharks…

  • @beet (Comment 156) : No haven’t seen that question yet. To be honest I can’t remember but it was nothing special.

  • Any update for this story? They have an agreement now or not?

I`ve been thinking about it and I understand wp`s reluctance. Remember JJ Engelbrecht isn`t in the super squad, he`s with their VC, so Whitehead will cover wing for the Stormers as well.
This could`ve been great for us!

I`m not sure Bosch is good enough so I don`t want to suggest we switch targets here . . .
