Every so often, something happens to put our rabid love of rugby into perspective and with Christchurch in New Zealand having suffered devastating losses, in terms of life as well as property and possessions as a result of Tuesday’s earthquake I think it’s only right that we take a few moments to show our support.
I’m sure we all have friends, family or acquaintances in Christchurch, owing to that region’s great love of the sport so dear to our hearts and the fact that, like them or not, their team, the Crusaders, has set the the benchmark in Super Rugby ever since the tournament began. Seeing such a great city, a great people and a great team laid low by such an awful natural disaster really does bring home exactly how fragile all of our existence here is and how truly fortunate we are to be able to debate – or even obsess about – rugby, without needing to worry too much about food, warmth, shelter and all the other basics that we so often take for granted.
I’d like to urge all of us to take a minute or two and spare a thought for those affected by the quake – say a prayer, if that’s your thing – and if there is any meaningful way you can donate something, be it money, time, or something else, to the relief efforts, please do so. To our Kiwi readers in particular, especially any who may have lost loved ones, our most heartfelt sympathise and sincerest condolences.

It truly is heartbreaking to watch. My thoughts and prayers go out to all.
Rob, Thanks for putting this up. Saw this on the news yesterday. Looked yesterday at NZ Herald at photos of this quake. Really devastating for some of the people there. Really feel for the people in Christchurh. I put something in a post on keo yesterday, but of course it would go missing there. So really pleased you put this up. RT also has something on it from yesterday.
Our thoughts and prayers are with all the people in Christchurch.

In one of the video taken during the quake people are walking around totally dazed and shocked, exactly like when the WTC came down in New York. Our hearts goe out to everyone affected and our thoughts are with you.
Be strong, People of NZ and specifically Christchurch! I have watched footage of your pain and pray that you find the strength to rise above it. š„
