van Staden out of tour

Eugene van Staden has been ruled out of the Sharks’ four game tour of Australia and New Zealand as a result of a shoulder injury that happened in the closing minutes of the Blues game.

According to early reports, van Staden has done his AC joint and the general prognosis is that he will be out for between 4 and 6 weeks.

According to Sharks coach John Plumtree, a decision on a replacement player has not been made, but Wiehahn Herbst and Dale Chadwick are both being looked at. Herbst has been out with an injury of his own and has only recently regained fitness, yet he has not had any game time. Chadwick ran out for the Sharks XV in the curtain raiser.

Sources close to the camp though have said that Herbst will be the replacement to leave with the team tomorrow.

In other injury news, Jean Deysel is penciled in to join up with the Sharks touring squad as soon as he is deemed match fit, which John Plumtree hopes to be for the Melbourne Rebels clash, or at the latest for the first New Zealand match against the Chiefs.

  • If the Sharks are looking outside the squad and they might have to if they want a recognised tighthead, I saw a pretty good one today – Frik Kirsten of the Bulls. Considering our options, he’d be a luxury for the tour. I’m not sure where he ranks in the Bulls depth chart right now(probably behind Dean Greyling) Getting him might be a long shot but worth a try.

  • @robdylan: how is herbst’s match fitness, though? (Don’t want to draft outside the squad at this stage, and I rate herbst-even though what I know of the scrums is dangerous lol-,no harm to draft kirsten and have a look at him from closer.

  • @robdylan (Comment 11) : Ya, I agree. Herbst knows the drill. I somehow missed that comment about sources saying Herbst is in. I thought there were doubts about his match fitness. Pointless drafting an outsider if Herbst is up to the task.

  • What’s former Kearsney boy Matt Stevens currently doing? His ban was from the RFU right, not the IRB?

  • @bergshark (Comment 12) : no ways… we have MORE than enough props in our ranks. I went with Herbst cos he’s played Super Rugby, but rather Chadwick or anyone else than getting another Bull in.

When we do that, we sit on our youngsters.

  • @bergshark (Comment 30) : According to @KeeganDaniel finishing up packing, so presume they are flying tonight, overnight on SAA, which leaves Joburg at 21h55. This means check in latest at 19h55 at JNB. So guess they are outta Durbs in the next couple of hours.

  • @JJR (Comment 27) : Chadwick is a loosehead by trade and would probably continue in that role once Herbst and Redelinghuys are fit again. Now that Chadwick is in, I’m almost certain Smit will have to cover T/head.
My initial suggestion of Kirsten revolved around finding an experienced tighthead. Herbst is one, Chadwick is definitely not. But it’s all water under the bridge now.

  • Sharks fly from Durban to Joburg at 18h40. Van Staden is definitely out.

Herbst has been left behind because they feel that he needs to build match fitness and he’ll get that in the Vodacom Cup
