Ok so lets get this out of the way: The Stormers were HONDKAK against the Lions in their first Super rugby match at Newlands!!
I think most of my fellow supporters of the ‘Fairies’ (they certainly played like fairies) will agree with me that we cannot afford another performance like that if we are to stand a chance of making the play-offs.
The Lions totally outplayed the men from Cape Town in every aspect bar goal kicking. Had Elton Jantjies kicked his goals the Lions would have ended their 16 match losing streak which goes back to the second-last week of the 2009 season. BLIKSEM!! 😯
Positives for the Stormers?? Firstly, they won a game they definitely didnt deserve to win!!
Secondly?? I can’t think of any!! 🙄 The form of Peter Grant when he came on?? Ricky Januarie managed to get to the rucks nearly as quick as he would devour a Big Mac meal??
Or how about the performance of debutant Rynhardt Elstadt who added much needed bulk to a very suspect tight five performance?
Needless to say, the Stormers will be hard at work this week to rectify the mistakes they made and lets hope they do so before the whistle blows for their match against the Cheetahs this weekend!!
Nog Stormers die kante!! HO$H!!

Cool, short and sweet. I think Jantjies cost the lions 2 games now
I’d also like to know what Juan De Jongh must do to get into the starting XV. 👿
Poolman added nothing and the less said about Bryan ‘Rooi slippers’ Habana the better!! 😕 🙄
Rynhardt Elstadt put in a very decent effort, where was Duane Vermuelen and Flow?
Also I learned over the weekend that Elstadts preferred position in lock and not flank.
It was a disjointed effort but it was the Stormers first Super Rugby outing and they got the win against a very motivated Lions side.
@Ben (Comment 1) :
Yeah! Thats strange because his form with the boot in last year’s CC was exceptional.
@wpw (Comment 2) : DeJong is going to vriet bank again this weekend, Jean will be captain in Schalks absence.
Yeah I wouldn’t get to worried about the stormers performance. It was their 1st game. Habana and Ricky are another story all together. What do they see in those guys? Seriously?
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 5) : How long is Schalla out?
@wpw (Comment 4) : I wonder if that kak game he had against the barbarians at the EOYT didn’t give his confidence a big knock?
@Original Champion (Comment 7) : Seeing a specialist today but won’t be considered for the game against the Cheetahs
Funny one Wes. 😆
No panic needed yet – winning when you are off your game can be a positive sign. Not to mention this was a first hit out in a bit, while the Lions were well-warmed up.
@claytie: jip ,elstadt looks like a player with a good future ahead of him (so,either the sharks go after him or nizaam ..which one will it be,claytie?)
Don’t comment here much, but have to say this.
Why is it that both Stormers and Bulls were [email protected] in their first games? Coincidentally both against the Lions. Only Naas has said the Bulls were up to shit because of the Lions. The Lions forced them into mistakes.
Maybe time to credit the Lions in forcing the two teams to play as [email protected] as they did?
@bergshark (Comment 11) : Hows about you guys take Ricki!
And the lions have had quite a lot of warm-up matches,so their prep has been good.
@WilladieLeeu (Comment 12) : Hehehe
@WilladieLeeu (Comment 12) : Hey Willa, Lions forced the Stormers to play crap.
@WilladieLeeu (Comment 12) : Unforced errors and indiscipline can not be credited to the other team.
and yet the Stormers are sitting on 8 log points….come on Wesley…you’re worse that some Sharks supporters I know!
@WilladieLeeu (Comment 12) : That last hundred odd phases from your goalline after the hooter went had my seat feeling might uncomfortable.
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 13) : Send him to Boland!! 🙂
I’m still happy my team took the points, they will be alot more settled next week
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 19) : I can imagine how it would’ve felt if I was in your shoes 😛
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 16) :
Thanks, that was mighty easy! Yeah, the last couple of minutes felt like I was going to have a heart attack. Was awesome though, can’t remember a Lions side taking the ball through so many phases.
@Ben (Comment 17) :
So, by putting the opposition under immense pressure, that has absolutely no impact on handling errors or discipline?
@WilladieLeeu (Comment 23) : We are quite balanced here on Sharksworld, well some of us are, not Rob, Robs a lunatic 😈
@WilladieLeeu (Comment 23) : That is why they call it “unforced” errors.
@WilladieLeeu (Comment 12) :
Maybe if you read the article AGAIN you’ll notice that I mentioned we were totally outplayed.
HELLO, die issie WTR nie!! Dit is Stormersworld!! 😈 😉
@bergshark (Comment 11) : You could always try and get Josh Strauss 😎
@wpw (Comment 2) : I’ve lost complete faith in Habana or as I like to call him Bryan Banana. His head seems to have left him somewhere around December 2009 and is still missing in action.
@Ben (Comment 20) :
Bolla is kla daar!! 😈 😉
@WilladieLeeu (Comment 23) : Look I’m not saying the lions didn’t play well because they did. I’m saying the stormers did play badly.
@Butchie34 (Comment 28) :
Dude, seriously!! Would you call John Smit names if he was in a similar rut??
We need to remember what Habana has done for rugby in SA and support him during this tough time.
Its what supporters do after all!!
@WilladieLeeu (Comment 12) : The Lions have disappointed me this tournament so far. Not because I had high expectations but because they had golden opportunities to beat both the Bulls and the Stormers and didn’t take them.
If the Lions carry on playing Jantjies, then they need to start Rocket as scrumhalf only for his kicking. It’ll take the pressure off of Jantjies as well.
@wpw (Comment 29) : I know so he’ll slot in nicely.
@Ben (Comment 25) :
I ‘like’ you!!
@Butchie34 (Comment 32) : Correct.
@wpw (Comment 34) :
@wpw (Comment 34) : Haha, true but I’m going to hold my support for the days when the Stormers play teams other than the Sharks and for when he pulls on the green and gold.
Bryan’s problems probably stem from the stilted backline of the Boks and we should see him score a few tries in Superrugby. He just needs some detox time from the Boks.
Lions are def only 5 days away from a win. Can’t keep losing like that. Next 3 games are Blues ,Highlanders and Cheetahs. Something has got to give.
I summed it up with the following elsewhere.
Good teams are expected to win most games, champion teams win the games they should have lost.
@Ben (Comment 25) :
Which is forced by the other team. 😉
@wpw (Comment 26) :
lol wpw, I did. You say we outplayed you because you were [email protected], not because we were that good. See the difference? 😆
@Butchie34 (Comment 32) :
If you told me that we would get bonus points against the defending champs and last seasons finalists for losing by 7 or less and playing damn good rugby, I would have taken it from where we were in 2010.
Jantjies is a really good goal kicker. It’s like a golf swing, something wrong with his rythm, but it’ll come back. We need a kicking coach. Maybe Naas? 😯
Starting with Rory is an option. Jano can get a break and Rory can play himself back to form.
@wpw (Comment 31) : Yes he’s done a lot for SA rugby but I really think they should drop his arse untill he gets his game back to what it should be. He’s just playing because of his name at the moment.
@wpw (Comment 31) : Habana’s ‘rut’ is lasting too long. I still maintain that the best thing that can happen to Habana is to be dropped for a couple of games and this should have happened last year already. Just see how being dropped motivated some All Blacks to get back to their best form….I suppose he’s too ‘expensive’ to drop.
I would love to see an in-form Habana at the RWC but then he really needs to start playing like the ‘star’ he is.
@Pokkel (Comment 41) : Snap! 🙂
Habs has forgotten how to enjoy his rugby. Marriage can do that to anyone. Haha.
@Pokkel (Comment 41) : Didn’t the Boks drop JPP until he picked up his game? Why only good for one but not hte other?
@Butchie34 (Comment 44) : Because Habana is a “legend” in the making! 😉
Habs says the prayers before the game. That’s why he’s there.
One positive about Habana is that I didn’t see him trying to go for 1 intercept against the lions. Or did I miss 1? 🙂
@Ben (Comment 47) : With his speed these days by the time he gets into position for the intercept the play is forty metres down the track. We didn’t see it cos he wasn’t on camera anymore 😈
@Butchie34 (Comment 48) : Hahaha
@Speed7 (Comment 46) :
Rather don’t go ‘there’ boet!! 😉
Honestly speaking though, it’s pretty tough to judge the Stormers against the Lions because say what you will, but the Lions had 80 minutes of proper rugby versus the Stormers pre-season games. Think of how poor the rugby was in the first round compared with the general quality of round 2.
That said, the Stormers have a LOT to work on.
@wpw (Comment 34) : is it just me or is CJ not having the impact in the tight five that everyone was expecting. I know its early days, but i thought we could maybe see an improvement during the warm-ups and 1st round.
oh, and bad luck for the ‘pools loss to West Ham. i hate playing the teams near the relegation zone at the end of the season. they somehow lift their game…
@VanWilder (Comment 52) : I never expected a damned thing, CJ can carry the ball just fine but after Jake and Keo said he was all that and a bag of chips everyone took it as gospel
@VanWilder (Comment 52) : @Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 53) : I’ve never been a big CJ fan either. His only advantage is that he can play both sides of the scrum but he is neither a great loosehead or tighthead.
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 53) : yip, true story. i`m not the biggest fan of CJ, that he had the potential to become a great is true, but he never delivered on that.
did you guys notice, youve got a prop factory in your backyard called the Maties…
@VanWilder (Comment 52) :
Its not just you.
CJ is the most overrated prop in SA. He always gets penalised at scrumtime and he is a dirty player to boot.
Ek hou niks van hom nie!!
@VanWilder (Comment 56) : Maties has been creating a decent fatty or two, that maroon jersey is a surefire way to find yourself a hooped one.
We’ll see what happens
@wpw (Comment 57) : You’re sitting in the unenviable position of disliking a player your union brought in. It’s never a nice feeling cos you’re expected to support them.
I’d feel the same way if the Sharks brought someone like Earl Rose in.
@Butchie34 (Comment 59) :
Well at least he aint no Jorrie Muller or Gus Theron!!
😯
@wpw (Comment 60) : Hahaha, too true and Gus played for both the Sharks and WP!
But I’d rather have the Jorrie than the Earl.
I thought Vermeulen was huge on defense for the Stormers and if I remember correctly he stopped a helluva lot of Lions momentum at crucial times.
@rhineshark (Comment 62) :
No one is doubting his defense. It’s on attack where he is lacking at the moment!!
I rate Ashley Johnson higher than Vermeulen!!
Where is that young winger that playd for WP in the currie cup? I forgot his name now.
@Ben (Comment 64) : JJ Engelbrecht?
@robdylan (Comment 65) : Yes that’s the guy.
@wpw (Comment 63) : You what?
@Ben (Comment 66) : He played in the WP Vodacom side on Saturday, a damned fine team on paper that played like they never had one practice session
@wpw (Comment 63) : And aparantly the FS rate Kabamba Floorts higher than Ashley Johnson! 🙂
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 68) : So what did Poolman do to get picked ahead of him?
@Ben (Comment 70) : Hes a Matie, JJ is an Ikey
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 71) : JJ had a pretty good currie cup IMO
@Ben (Comment 70) :
JJ is a specialist left wing!! 🙄
@Butchie34 (Comment 28) : Makes you wonder if it wasn’t the Bulls that made him look so great! I’ll support him in green and gold, but that’s where my duty ends.
@wpw (Comment 73) : He’s better than Habana! 😉
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 68) : and yet still drew with a Lions team that contained about a million combined first-class caps… 🙂
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 54) : And after 30 minutes of ball carrying he is papper than the proverbial …..
@robdylan (Comment 76) : I hadn’t taken that into account, was a bit miff that I rushed to Newlands early to witness them sneak a draw at the death.
Thanks for some perspective.
Heres the WP squad:
15. Marcel Brache
14. Shuaib Samaai
13. Johann Sadie
12. Tim Whitehead
11. JJ Engelbrecht
10. Sam Lane
9. Louis Schreuder
8. Nick Koster
7. Siya Kolisi
6. Ruan Kitshoff
5. Reniel Hugo
4. Hilton Lobberts
3. JD Moller (C)
2. Sidney Tobias
1. Wicus Blaauw
@Pokkel (Comment 42) : I think I suggested that last year and got panned for it…
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 78) : and that’s your VODACOM CUP backline?
Geez dude… I am muy jealous.
Apart from the scrumhalf, that backline is brilliant! Ok, I don’t know too much about Lane either.
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 78) : oh wait, I just figured out how come you didn’t win.
3. JD Moller
Has the Cape run out of tightheads for real now?
@wpw (Comment 63) : It wasn’t that kind of game for him to play. To be honest the Lions were all over you guys and without Vermeulen’s defense it could easily have been a home loss. I also rate Johnson higher as a runner, but had he been in Vermeulen’s boots on Saturday I doubt whether he would have made a more significant impact on attack.
@robdylan (Comment 80) : Schreuder…eish.Dude has a nice pass to his right but thats about it, Lane is ok.Doubt he will ever get higher than VC.
@robdylan (Comment 81) : That bright idea was hatched about a year and a half ago but nobody knows why.
Ashley Johnson is a phenomenal, very under-rated player.
Vermeulen is good on defence, and as exciting as De Wet Barry on attack.
@robdylan (Comment 81) : Run out?We’ve had Brok Harris for the last how long.JC Kritzinger was decent TH but then the head honchos sat down and decided ” whatever shall we do with this promising young tighthead….aaah yes, we will convert him to a loosehead.We are so clever mwuhahahaha “
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 74) : That’s also my take on the situation….. like Tiger..he needs a “head shrink” to help him!
@Big Fish (Comment 84) :
hehehe
We speak the same language!! 😈
@wpw (Comment 87) : Not surprising, you stay in the far north and Fish lives on an oil refinery.
@Ben (Comment 75) : Everyone is a better wing than Habana at the moment.
@Butchie34 (Comment 89) : Even Nandos has better wings.
Forgive me for being ignorant, but do the Stormers have someone perhaps a little sharper than our Bryan to take his place till he finds his feet again? Or would that mean raiding the Stormers XV’s fridge?
@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 88) :
Hey now, Milnerton is about 15km from the refinery. I’m sure loads of other suburbs have pockets of unexploded gasoline that spontaneously combust at random intervals.
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 91) : There is no shortage of wings in the cape.
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 91) : Like I mentioned JJ Engelbrecht had a very good currie cup. And aplon is there.
No varsity cup thread?

@Clayton(PJLD) (Comment 118) : Now I know, thanks.
Any news on Schalla`s visit to the specialist yesterday guys? 😕
@Original Champion (Comment 120) : 2-3 weeks. Only a strain, not too serious.
@Original Champion (Comment 120) : The longer he is out, the better for the stormers…he is a sheit captain. Does not lead by example and sure would make me X if I was a supporter, by his dont-care attitude with interviews and generally..
@Ice (Comment 122) :
Not exactly the way to talk about the unofficial mayor of Cape Town but I can`t argue with blondes!
@Ben (Comment 119) :
Did you know that Carel Du Plessis coached them before he was appointed Bok coach??
😯
(just some useful trivia) 😉
@Ice (Comment 122) :
And yet he led us to two finals last year and was nominated as one of the SA Players of the Year??
Yeah, he is crap isn’t he?? 🙄 😈
@wpw (Comment 125) : lead u to 2 unsuccesful finals…he might have only been nominated cause he has a big daddy…how was your reaction when he laughed off the lost last year?? Common Westerling…don’t bark if u have nothing to bite with! 😈
@wpw (Comment 125) : I’m with Ice. Shcalk is a great player, but as a captain is decidedly average. i think de Villiers is a much better option
@wpw (Comment 124) : Had no idea! 🙂
@robdylan (Comment 127) :
I also think that Jean is a better captain but I my comment was aimed at the statement that he doesnt lead by example.
He hardly had a bad game last year and more importantly, his discipline was good!!
@wpw (Comment 129) : I diasagree – I don’t think he is the most disciplined man on the field (let’s leave Duane Vermeulen for another discussion)! I was mostly talking discipline and getting the job done.
