Van Heerden starts against Blues

Former Lions captain Wikus van Heerden will make his long awaited return to the Johannesburg side’s starting line-up for Friday’s Super Rugby match against the Blues at Coca-Cola Park.

SAPA reports that Van Heerden will join current captain Franco van der Merwe in the second row in place of George Earle.

Coach John Mitchell said that Van Heerden’s physical presence at lock -not flank where he is considered a specialist — will be come in handy against the Auckland side.

“I’m just going for more mobility and also a greater physical presence,” Mitchell said on Tuesday when asked why George Earl has been left out of the squad.

“I simply want more physical presence out of my tight five in all aspects of play.”

Van Heerden has fulfilled that role with flying colours over the years and his Lions supporters will be hard pressed to name a match where he left the field unscathed.

He helped the Bulls to their maiden Super 14 title in 2007 and was just as important a player during his stint at Guinness Premiership side Saracens.

With Van Heerden’s seat on the bench vacant, Mitchell opted to give former Boland and Blue Bulls loose-forward Dries van Schalkwyk a chance to prove his worth at this level.

“Dries is on the bench covering lock and loose forward.

“He’s a good lineout jumper so the acquisition of him in pre-season –and Michael Rhodes — was around that area.”

The selection of two natural flankers at lock highlighted why the Lions were desperate to secure the services of Bakkies Botha next year.

Botha has been linked but it is not confirmed that he has decided to join French club Toulon.

Mitchell said that he has two players similar to Van Heerden in Rhodes and Schalkwyk

“Michael Rhodes was not considered because of concussion, so clearly we have two players that have the ability to play very similarly to Wikus van Heerden which means we have three players that are lock-loosies in our mix.”

Current Lions captain Franco van der Merwe is also a competent blind side flank, although his attention has recently shifted to becoming a lineout specialist.

Van der Merwe confirmed that they are expeting a brutal battle up front against the Blues.

“I know it is going to be tough up front, and I know Kevin Mealamu is a good player and leads by example as well,” said Van der Merwe.

“He [Mealamu] scored a good try against the Crusaders from the drive. We have identified one or two tactics that we will have to implement to stop them up front and we have to focus on what we want to do.”

Despite losing narrowly in both of the first two games of the season, the Lions have already shown a dramatic improvement by coming close to beating both of last season’s finalists.

The Lions will be eager to end the run of losses in the competition and get their first Super Rugby victory in more than a year under their belts.

  • he has done well there off the bench. He will extend his career quite a few years by moving to lock.

  • When are the Lions going to start with Kockott, I wonder? ARE they ever going to start with Kockott?

  • @Pokkel (Comment 11) :

I would play him at 13 cause he still has issues under the high ball….

All other aspects of the game he is looking real good…
I’d actually say on current SR form Daniller seems to be the inform 15 of SA teams…

  • @SharonvanWyk (Comment 18) :

Hopefully soon…Vermaak is playing well in defense and all…but the hop skip and pass of Vermaak is slowing our backline by a half second…which could be the dif in a try/ no try….the gaps are tight in Super Rugby…

  • Should I even dare to ask the question?
    Is this the week?

    Is this the game?

Does the rolling record end here?

  • @Hmmm (Comment 19) : Daniller? You’re kidding… all he does is kick and kick and kick… very limited player, IMO

  • @robdylan (Comment 22) : When Daniller collects the ball at the back and doesn’t kick an up and under, he looks like the most uncomfortable player on the park. I don’t think he has much of a rugby brain.

  • Lions missed a trick here. I definately would`ve started Kockott, just to take a little pressure of Elton.

Having said that . . . think Lions could edge this, but then they simply must hold on for the last 10 minutes as well for a change.

  • Kockett will get his chance to start ..just not now.

Vermaak is on the field for his experience and leadership.

Daniller is the king of collecting the ball, running 20 meters and then kicking a huge up and under that he can’t collect. 🙁
