JP Pietersen has been named to start in place of Lwazi Mvovo at left wing in the only change to the Sharks’ run-on side to play the Force on Saturday. Pietersen, who missed the opening game of the season due to a hamstring complaint, scored the winning try against the Blues last week after coming on as a substitue.

The rest of the team that did so well to beat the Aucklanders by 14 points has been retained, with Stefan Terblanche again captaining from outside centre and Bismarck du Plessis joining his brother Jannie and Beast Mtawarira in a strong front row. bok captain John Smit ,in 16 last week, remains on the bench but will wear 17 in this game as he constitues the prop replacement in the absence of the injured Eugene van Staden. Craig Burden joins the 22, while Jacques Botes is fit again and takes over from Lambert Groenewald as the loose forward replacement.

Should the Sharks record a victory this weekend, they will equal the Bulls’ record for most victories by a South African Super Rugby side over Australian opposition.

The Sharks:

1. Tendai Mtawarira
2. Bismarck du Plessis
3. Jannie du Plessis
4. Steven Sykes
5. Alistair Hargreaves
6. Keegan Daniel
7. Willem Alberts
8. Ryan Kankowski
9. Charl McLeod
10. Patrick Lambie
11. JP Pietersen
12. Meyer Bosman
13. Stefan Terblanche (Capt)
14. Odwa Ndungane
15. Louis Ludik

Replacements
16. Craig Burden
17. John Smit
18. Anton Bresler
19. Jacques Botes
20. Conrad Hoffmann
21.Jacques-Louis Potgieter
22.Lwazi Mvovo

  • Why? I would’ve rather had Lwazi start. I would’ve thought if you were going to change the wings put JP on for Odwa and the bring the speed of our back 3.

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 2) : it’s a bit of a strange call, but remember that Lwazi also took a knock to the ankle… this might be management.

Odwa is vastly experienced and has been our best outside back for the last two weeks. It would be wrong to drop him, but JP is also a hugely valuable asset. Even though he is a Bok in his own right, Lwazi is still the junior member of the three.

  • @robdylan (Comment 3) : Odwa has definitely been the best of our outside backs and I agree that it would be wrong to drop him. If I was Plum I wouldn’t have changed the team at all.

But I suspect it may be player management.

I’m a little concerned with JPP though. Is he really over his hamstring problems? Didn’t he start the CC semi after coming back from a hammie injury and only lasted 5 minutes? What if the same happens on Saturday?

But then with all of those questions I have the utmost faith that the backroom team would’ve done everything they could to help get JPP over those issues. (If I remember correctly it was actually something wrong with his back which was causing his hamstring to play up. although I can’t remember where exactly I read that).

  • Everyone is going to need rest sooner or later so why not start now. I’d rather change only one or two per game than 4 or 5.

  • @Speed7 (Comment 6) : Hopefully, what do you think your team’s chances are of beating the Blues tomorrow night?

I’ve backed them on Superbru so I hope they don’t let me down there. They owe me some payback since I backed them against the Stormers and if Elton had his radar in… Oh well.

  • @Jarson (AddicteD) (Comment 5) : i’m with u all the way there, i believe in not tempering to much, but swoping 1 or at most 2 players each game will not desturb the flow of the game and keep all sharp and motivated.

  • My question is why is Mvovo on the bench if he is carrying an injury? Adi would have been a better bet in the 22 jersey in that case.

  • @Original Champion (Comment 10) : no, I think that would be my preference too.

Then again, Keegan was a defensive demon against the Blues and if he can do the same sort of thing against the Force, then what more can you ask for?

It will also be his 26th birthday on Sat 🙂

  • @Butchie34 (Comment 7) : hehe. I backed them against Stormers too. I think Lions will beat Blues. If they get their kicks over that is.

Gonna put my picks in now. I am going with Lions by 3.

  • Nice settled team this. JPP had some game time last week.

Think keeping Mvovo on the bench is just caution, he no doubt come on for JPP later on.

    Go Sharks.

  • @Puma (Comment 13) : I don’t think we should see this as Lwazi being demoted… there is so much talent in this squad that sooner or later everyone is going to find themselves spending a week or two out of the stating team. I reckon Potgieter will get a start within the next few weeks as well

  • Strong team with strong backup. Good to see JPP back in the team; what an athlete he is and what rugby skills. Mvovo could do with the rest as he hasn’t exactly shone in the past two games. But there will be plenty of changes as Plumtree rests players during the tour. Player management is so important in today’s rugby with demands on players more punishing than ever before. Woo Hoo! Can’t wait!

  • Although Mvovo is a prodigious talent, he still has some glaring weaknesses, not least of which is his tendency to stay on his wing and wait for the ball. He is never seen around the pitch looking for work. I rate Mvovo, but until he learns to look for work the way Odders does, he has some serious improving to do. There is not a harder working wing than Odders and with the burst of speed he showed last week is also apparently not lacking too much in the pace department. Mvovo is, without a doubt the future, of both Sharks and Bok rugby, but Odders and JPP are definitely the present for the Sharks.

  • @robdylan (Comment 14) : I don’t think this is Mvovo being dropped at all. More a caution. I think Plum might have started with Mvovo and not JPP this week had he not twisted the ankle. First game on tour should always be played with a settled team who have had plenty game time together, much like we had to do on home turf. Need to win your first game on tour. Confidence is up after our home wins, we win our first game on tour our tails will be up for sure.

If we win in Perth, I have no doubt Plum will start to rotate. Think that is a given that there will be plenty rotation this tourney. Otherwise we will see injuries coming to players before the end of S15.

Okay out of here. Catch up tomorrow.

  • With the advent of the new super rugby season, and with the resting of players and injuries that has already started bogging teams down, one can easily see that this will lead to a lot of utility players developing. Soon sevens rugby players will be the most important asset to any team.

  • @shaniboi (Comment 26) : Right on, I think Mvovo should be watching Odders to learn how to look for work. It is a long season, and Oom Stef will not be able to play every single match, not to mention that we will want to get Adi some game time at 13. Smit will fill a very important role as both a starting hooker, prop and as captain.

i thought he would captain the side and it seems he is not so he may have to go. 🙁

  • Rumors doing the rounds again. 😈

Lambie is reportedly, according to stories that come out of France, about to be targeted by French clubs with massive offers to move to the northern hemisphere, with a sum of €800 000 for a season being mentioned as the ball-park figure that the youngster can expect to be offered.

If true, this would make Lambie one of the most valuable players in the 20-22 year age bracket, perhaps even more valuable than O’Connor, who has played a lot more international rugby than his Sharks opponent.
