Sharks XV coach Sean Everitt has named his squad for the away match to Windhoek to face the Welwitschias. Super rugby call ups and players returning from injury mean that there are a few changes to the team which beat the Blue Bulls in the first round.

Sevens Springbok and former SA under 20 winger, Sbura Sithole comes in for Mark Richards. The departure of last weeks centre pairing for Australia has necessitated a new centre pairing with Howard Mnisi and Jerome “Trompie” Pretorius being chosen to do duty here with the exciting Piet Lindeque named in the 22 jersey.
Lambert Groenewald returns from his Super rugby bench duty to take the place of Peet Marais who moves to the bench. Nic Claasen comes in for Francois Kleynhans at flank. At prop, Sabs Nhlapo replaces Robbie Harris who moves to the bench. Wiehan Herbst returns from long term injury in place of Dale Chadwick who has been called up to the Super squad.

  • Good to see that Dan Adonga is still on the bench. Yet I wish he would get a starting position. This guy is a freak of nature in the best possible way. He needs to be fast track so he can develop better. I believe he is going to become a legend of a player, but only if he gets the opportunity to shine. 15 minutes(10 of which on the bench) in a warm up game is not enough time to convince people of your talent.

  • @robdylan (Comment 5) : Rob what is happening with Piet Lineque, why is he making the Squid…has his game been bad, or is the competition just to great? And how fast is Piet compared to the other Centers? Just wonder if we aren’t going to loose him due to lack of opportunity..see we’ve lost Sam Lane to province…I like our prospects in the team thought..sorry we can’t keep every one 😉 … Have you been impressed by Koch…watch that boy…can be a star…wish we could give jordaan a super rugby run…that 18 year old kid….his massive…built like a hooker, runs like a wing…freakish talent…

  • That’s a seriously good front row. I rate Herbst and Cooper VERY highly. Not seen anything of Sabs but he’s got a decent reputation!

Sharks XV tough it out against Namibia
    Duane Heath
    March 05, 2011
The Sharks XV were made to work hard for a 25-5 (halftime 15-5) victory over the Namibia Welwitschias in a Vodacom Cup match played at the Hage Geingob stadium in Windhoek on Saturday.
It was a much-improved performance from the home side, who lost 47-12 to the EP Kings in the opening round last week.

For the Sharks XV, however, this hard-fought victory away from home sets them up nicely for the tournament after an equally impressive win over the champion Blue Bulls in round one.

The Sharks XV must have sent a chill down the spine of the 4 000 spectators that had come to watch their team on a cool and rainy afternoon when fullback Kobus de Kock, who scored a brace against the Blue Bulls, crashed over in the opening minute.

But the home side responded 12 minutes later when blindside flanker Morné Blom crossed the line to level matters.

Sharks XV scrumhalf Ross Cronjé kicked a 19th-minute penalty to make it 8-5 before right winger Sbura Sithole dived over four minute before the break for Cronjé to covert and open up a 10-point lead.

It’s often said that good teams have a knack of scoring either side of the halftime break, and the Sharks pulled off the double blow in style when No 8 Marcell Coetzee followed up Sithole’s earlier effort by scoring his team’s third try in the 43rd minute.

The Welwitschias gave as good as they got in the tight exchanges and kept the Sharks XV scoreless until De Kock had the final say 14 minutes from time, as he dotted down to make it 25-5 and give his team the perfect start to their campaign.

Welwitschias 5 – Try: Morné Blom.

Sharks XV 25 – Tries: Kobus de Kock (2), Sbura Sithole, Marcell Coetzee. Conversion: Ross Cronjé. Penalty: Ross Cronjé.
