Richards stuck on orange

Having received the green light from John Plumtree and the tour management to join up with the Sharks Super Rugby squad on tour in Australia, winger Mark Richards faces a delay of a different sort as he waits for his visa to come through.

Richards, who represented the Sharks at under 21 level last year and has also been used extensively by the national Sevens squad over the last few months, is highly rated by the coaching staff for his deceptive running and finishing skills, as well as a never-say-die attitude that sees him punch well beyond his weight. He was very nearly a surprise inclusion in the Sharks team to play in the Currie Cup final last year, as Odwa Ndungane was doubtful going into that match.

It is the combination of injuries to Ndungane and JP Pietersen against the Western Force last week that has opened the door for Richards. While the dreadlocked Bok has been cleared of any serious damage after an illegal tackle, it is his teammate Pietersen who has instead been forced out of the tour, due to a knee injury. Ndungane is touch-and-go to be available for selection against the Rebels on Friday night and it’s also doubtful that Richards will arrive in time to be considered for that match.

Plumtree may well be forced to reshuffle his resources in the backline, with Louis Ludik, Stefan Terblanche or Adi Jacobs all options on the wing.

  • All the best to Mark. If positional changes were to be made, I’ll put Stef on the wing and Adi at 13.

  • @Ben (Comment 9) : Adi is only just coming back to form and you want to play him out of position? I would play Adi at centre and either Terblanche or Ludik at wing.

  • @Jarson (AddicteD) (Comment 8) : I,m with you on that, Stef on wing and Adi at center, Louis is also making the last post his own, and Adi is regaining form because of game time in a familiar position. Stef will adjust easy.

  • @Ben (Comment 12) : Yeah, but a wing’s job is not just catching and running, he has to defend, he has to track back and cover the back when the fullback comes into the line, etc. It would be unfair on a good player and probably not benefit him or the team.

  • Plumtree will want to minimise changes as much as possible to Stef will move to wing and Adi will come in at 13, and i think depending on Alberts and Botes injury concerns we may opt for a 5-2 bench split. There is some thought that Stef will stay at 13 to counteract Mortlock and Adi will just move to wing.

  • i would rather rather bring in jlp at 1st centre and move bosman and stefan out one. i wouldn’t rush adi in just yet. he may have had a good game in the sharks xv, but i am still not sure if he is ready to step up.

  • Hi all
Im not sure about richards ,may be to small ,but time will tell ,hope is is good for us .
I would have jlp @ 13 ,seen a game where he was great for the bulls at 13.

I think Daniels should keep his spot at 8 this weekend ,he really shines there! Put Kanko @ 7 if willem is sore

  • Agree with the idea of jlp @13 and stef terblanche @14 ,mvovo @11.adi on the bench.my concern is alberts-guess he’ll have to do a lot of battering into the opp this friday-and we still have games vs chiefs and crusaders!the body needs rest.

  • I’m still thinking a player like mike rhodes shouldve either stayed @sharks or been offered some sort of contract.he couldve been taking some of the workload off of players like sykes/deysel/alberts (hour seems to pack more weight than breslernwho is an out-and-out lock option.couldve had bresler as lock sub, rhodes as lock/flank sub.keeping both of them in the squad in certain games-with one of them to even start certain games).

  • @bergshark (Comment 45) : agree this is a good game to bring alberts off the bench. but i think the injury to botes might mess that.

  • Why give a player like lambert groenewald bench and a few min versus blues but then drop him out of touring squad? Sometimes I can’t see the reason behind some of the sharks decisions.give the guy a tour to australasia.perhaps he couldve been on bench this friday.the only way he is going to start fulfilling his potential(which I’ve read,he has plenty),is if he is on the field, playing good opp week -in and week-out.don’t throw in 4,5 youngsters @ a time, that would be silly.but the sharks have always brought young talent smartly into the squad.we def need to develop more strong ball carriers at7,that’s a big part of our game.

  • Would also like to see how the development of players like heimar williams, piet lindeque, paul jordaan, kobus de kock, wynand pienaar go this season.positions in the u 21s is gonna be tough to get (although jordaan is still only u19,I’d like to see him get some game time this cc -his def needs some work ,though.but where better than in the cauldron of a cc game? ).
