Sharks XV loose forward Marcell Coetzee had capped a meteoric rise through the ranks this season with a call-up to the Sharks Super Rugby tour squad.
The plan, as far as we can work it out, was always for Jean Deysel to join the Sharks a week or so into their tour, but a number of sources have since confirmed that he is not quite ready to take that step. An article on SARugby.com reveals that Coetzee will board the plane instead, along with Mark Richards and the pair should join up with the squad after this weekend’s game in Melbourne.
We’d like to congratulate Marcell and wish him all the best for the tour ahead. It’s a fantastic opportunity – and just reward for a fantastic player who has really stepped up in the Vodacom Cup in the first two rounds. Congrats as well to the Sharks union, who are really putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to backing their own juniors to deliver.

this lad is the real deal… and he’s going to get gametime. I feel it in my bones.
Well done to you,fella!now go sow ’em what you can do!!
Lol meant to say show them- but you can also ,I guess ,sow those wanna-be tacklers all over the fields of the rugby world.
Glad richards managed to sort out the visa probs.
@bergshark (Comment 4) : they’re flying tomorrow
rob you think all this talk about the sharks on other websites is going to backfire on the bois mentally..i read that the sharks are the only team capable of winning..and as much happiness as it brings me i feel a sense of worry if the wheels come off
Just keep your eye on the ball son π
@shaniboi (Comment 6) : I’m not too worried about it, to be honest. I think the guys have learned that lesson from 2009… besides, we know how fickle the media are. The moment the Bulls or Stormers put in a halfway decent performance again, the Sharks will be forgotten.
Congrats Marcell.
Cool. Now I can finally see the guy I’ve heard so much about.
Congrats and good luck Marcell. π
Congratulations and good luck mate!
I hope to see you on the park soon!
Great news!! The Sharks are backing their youngsters. Very happy for Marcell!
I wonder if this new found faith in youth has something to do with Lambie doing so well last year? Either way congrats Marcell, I know you will do the black and white proud.
@war1 (Comment 13) : Good point. Not every laaitie that gets a chance is going to shine though but atleast they are getting valuable experience for the years to come.
@Jarson (AddicteD) (Comment 14) : Yeah, Lambie is a special talent but he may have also opened the door for more youngsters, which is a good thing I think.
@war1 (Comment 15) : Most definitely π
I like the way the Sharks are now more prepared to fast track seriously promising youngsters.
Let’s hope we see Piet Lindeque and Paul Jordaan given the same treatment in the near future.
@robdylan (Comment 17) : Currie Cup 2011? I hope so too.
@war1 (Comment 18) : me too
@war1 (Comment 18) :
I am seriously excited to see more of the youngsters..
The more exposure they get here, the more chance there is that they do shine like Lambie..
And they will forever be indebted to the Sharks, so hopefully most of them stay here..
Too good Marcell. Reading this news I donβt know whether to be happy or sad. Sad coz I was so looking forward to watching more of him in Vodacom Cup matches. But an excellent achievement. Based on the only game Iβve seen him in this year I noticed not only a huge improvement in Marcellβs overall play over last season but some qualities there for fans to get really excited about β his ball carrying, his positional play, his awareness etc β so many things that heβs doing really well and that have obviously impressed the likes of Plum, Sean and even Theron. Marcell is without doubt one of my favourite players of 2011 so far.

@Pokkel (Comment 23) : I reckon over 60% of all professional rugby players in SA list “Braveheart” as their favourite movie…
@robdylan (Comment 24) : We chatted about Marcell a while ago and we both thought he wasn’t quite ready for SupeRugby….I truly hope we were wrong and that he really impress in the Sharks team. It will be great for him to tour with the seniors even if he doesn’t get much game time.
Go on Marcell make the most of it!
@Pokkel (Comment 25) : 19 is very young to play Super Rugby, particularly as a forward… Marcell is a big boy, though and has come on in leaps and bounds in a very short time. I reckon he’ll be fine if called upon.
@robdylan (Comment 26) : Agree. Go Marcell. SuperPat is leading a vanguard of not just tomorrow’s Sharks superstars but future Boks in the making, methinks.
@SharonvanWyk (Comment 27) : I am SO stoked to see the structures finally working… Although I do have to hed a retrospective tear for all of those brave souls for whom this came a little late… the guys who had to leave
@robdylan (Comment 24) : And either steak or simply ‘meat’ as their fav food.
@McLovin (Comment 29) : yup π Imaginative bunch.
@robdylan (Comment 30) : ja, and their fridges are always ‘ag, just some eggs and fruit”….they all seem to forget to tell us about the 3 cases of Windhoeks stacked in between the one egg and the one vrot apple! π
@robdylan (Comment 24) : They should really check out Any Given Sunday, much more motivational . . . π
@Ice (Comment 31) : Good old Windhoek π
@Ben:Pokel answered you
what’s up with deysel?
@rekinek (Comment 35) : he’s with the Boks?
Lol this thread has been given new life:-)
