Coetzee a surprise tourist

Sharks XV loose forward Marcell Coetzee had capped a meteoric rise through the ranks this season with a call-up to the Sharks Super Rugby tour squad.

The plan, as far as we can work it out, was always for Jean Deysel to join the Sharks a week or so into their tour, but a number of sources have since confirmed that he is not quite ready to take that step. An article on SARugby.com reveals that Coetzee will board the plane instead, along with Mark Richards and the pair should join up with the squad after this weekend’s game in Melbourne.

We’d like to congratulate Marcell and wish him all the best for the tour ahead. It’s a fantastic opportunity – and just reward for a fantastic player who has really stepped up in the Vodacom Cup in the first two rounds. Congrats as well to the Sharks union, who are really putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to backing their own juniors to deliver.

  • @shaniboi (Comment 6) : I’m not too worried about it, to be honest. I think the guys have learned that lesson from 2009… besides, we know how fickle the media are. The moment the Bulls or Stormers put in a halfway decent performance again, the Sharks will be forgotten.

  • I wonder if this new found faith in youth has something to do with Lambie doing so well last year? Either way congrats Marcell, I know you will do the black and white proud.

  • I like the way the Sharks are now more prepared to fast track seriously promising youngsters.

Let’s hope we see Piet Lindeque and Paul Jordaan given the same treatment in the near future.

  • @war1 (Comment 18) :

I am seriously excited to see more of the youngsters..

The more exposure they get here, the more chance there is that they do shine like Lambie..

And they will forever be indebted to the Sharks, so hopefully most of them stay here..

  • Too good Marcell. Reading this news I don’t know whether to be happy or sad. Sad coz I was so looking forward to watching more of him in Vodacom Cup matches. But an excellent achievement. Based on the only game I’ve seen him in this year I noticed not only a huge improvement in Marcell’s overall play over last season but some qualities there for fans to get really excited about – his ball carrying, his positional play, his awareness etc – so many things that he’s doing really well and that have obviously impressed the likes of Plum, Sean and even Theron. Marcell is without doubt one of my favourite players of 2011 so far.

  • @robdylan (Comment 24) : We chatted about Marcell a while ago and we both thought he wasn’t quite ready for SupeRugby….I truly hope we were wrong and that he really impress in the Sharks team. It will be great for him to tour with the seniors even if he doesn’t get much game time.

Go on Marcell make the most of it!

  • @Pokkel (Comment 25) : 19 is very young to play Super Rugby, particularly as a forward… Marcell is a big boy, though and has come on in leaps and bounds in a very short time. I reckon he’ll be fine if called upon.
