Sharks may go to London after all

A report in the Sunday Tribune yesterday suggested that the Sharks may yet face the Crusaders at Twickenham in London, with the alternative date of Sunday 27 March proposed in order to to overcome the logistical hurdles that would make a Saturday game unworkable. We reported during the course of last week that the Crusaders were keen to host the match in London as part of a post-earthquake fund-raising initiative, but the the RFU were forced to veto the idea on the ground that Harlequins would be playing a Premiership match nearby on the same day.

We’re not exactly sure where the decision currently rests, but our information is that the Sharks are fully behind the move, although John Plumtree is understood to have a few reservations based on the impact that this revised schedule may have on his squad. The Sharks union has apparently been offered a nice financial incentive, meaning that the suits are, as one would expect, squarely behind the deal. With all parties now seemingly on-board, though, we expect a final decision and an official announcement to be made soon – perhaps even later today.

While the prospect of seeing the Sharks in London is, of course, still a mouth-watering one, with the game moved to Sunday 27th – and the team only arriving back in South Africa the following Tuesday – this last-minute alteration to the tour schedule will add a huge amount of pressure to the coach and the team who face a crunch home game against the Stormers the following Saturday. This factor will, I’m sure, have been the main reason for Plumtree’s alleged reluctance to accommodate the switch and the team will need to pull out all the stops to ensure that they don’t allow the sideshows to distract them from their primary task in the competition.

We’ll keep you updated as this develops further.

  • I still like the idea, my only concern is that we’ll have one day less to rest between the Saders and Stormers games. But I’m sure the guys will be up for it.

  • according to the the tribune, this is all in the Crusaders court now. Crusaders are waiting to see if this game will push Twickenham over its annual games quota. If it doesn’t then the game is all systems go. Apparently we’ll all know today. Twickenham isn’t far from Heathrow (6 miles), so the players could fly out after the game as most flights to SA leave at around 8pm. Personally i don’t see this effecting the stormers game. The players have beaten teams on worse schedules than this.

  • @Ben (Comment 7) : i disagree. the crusaders are looking far too dangerous at home. the best way to beat them is to upset their plans. sharks know how to travel and do it well, crusaders aren’t as successful travelling. having split support will also help the sharks out.

  • @try time (Comment 10) : Our home games are vital, we can afford to lose against the Crusaders but we should really come back and beat the stormers. Stormers game is more important.

  • looking at the sharks current form and the crusaders, if the game stays in new zealand the sharks will lose it. bosman and stefans dreadful drifting is leaving huge gaps in our defence and also making the wingers have to tip toe next to the touchline. the crusaders love teams using drifting defence against them as the centers cut back into the gap created by the drifting defence. rebels used this well against the sharks and got two easy tries from it. imagine what a better team would do to the bosman stefan gap. so anything that can disrupt the crusaders machine is welcomed.

  • @Ben (Comment 11) : the only real disadvantage between the games is two extra days for players to recover from injuries. the sharks (on current form) will lose to the crusaders, so maybe tired players should be rested and the standby’s be given a chance to shine in this game. i agree though the stormers game is a must win. but i don’t think the game being played in london instead of nz is going to disadvantage the sharks more against the stormers.

  • @Ben (Comment 11) : Finishing 1st in the conference but 3rd overall, means we’ll have to travel anyways for the play-off. Imo we cant afford to lose against anyone and if we improve our chances against the Saders away from NZ then so be it. You gotta beat the best to be the best.

  • We might lose both, we may beat the Saders and lose against the Stormers, or lose against the Saders and beat the Stormers. Or we can win both. 😈 What I’m trying to say is, the Stormers game is not a guaranteed win, neither is the Crusaders game a guaranteed loss.

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 44) : stefan is fit and is a good player. he just has a tendency to waste opportunities and make basic errors. but i will never fault his passion, fitness and commitment. currently the centers are drifting too much on defence and attack. the ball is getting to the wing on the touchline before the backline has reached the advantage line. this is a great compliment to pat and charl but questions must be asked why the centers are so quick to pass the ball instead of attacking the gain line and then freeing up players outside them.

  • @Hertford Highlander (Comment 59) : if you look back over the last few years the sharks do know how to slow the saders down. they are one of the better teams at slowing the saders down. whether they are good enough to do it this year, it all depends on a little luck. the crusaders make a lot of mistakes in the first 15 and if you don’t get a good lead up, you will regret it. once the crusaders feel under pressure they tend to throw it around less making them easier to defend against. i wouldn’t write the sharks off in this game, but i also wouldn’t bet against the saders.

  • Read this yesterday in the Tribune. Think we all spoke about it at length on another thread and on keo. But will say it again. It will be just madness if we go the London route. Our players gonna be buggered after all the travel. We in NZ already would rather we just play Saders there. Mark my words we go the London route we will lose to Stormers at the Tank and Lions at altitude on our return. We gonna be buggered with all the travel. Probably lose to Saders as well. Not good idea this at all. 24 hour flight to London, then a 11 hour flight to Joburg another hour to Durbs. Add all the waiting time for flights at the airport. Crazy to do this. This will set Sharks back for sure. Won’t bother Saders cause they have a BYE after the Sharks game, so the travel factor will not affect them.

Think we may lose to Saders where ever we play em, if Sharks play like they did against the Rebels. Cause Saders were outstanding in their game. Gonna be damn hard to beat em. So we should be thinking of our games back home in SA. WE have to beat Stormers at the Tank and try and beat Lions at Altitude. WE need a fresh team to do that. Not one that have travelled the globe a week back. Really daft idea this.

I for one hope it does not happen. Sorry to the Shark supporters in London. πŸ˜›

I know it is for a good cause, but it wont benefit the Sharks this travel. If we had a bye after the Saders game, I would be all for it.

If we play like we done against Rebels, we wont beat Chiefs let alone Saders. Sharks have to up their game. Need to get our defence back to where it was. Players must not be selfish either, we missed some sure tries by not passing on Friday. Handling errors cost us too. But our defence was terrible. Our lineouts were not the best either. Against the kiwi sides we need to be our best. We will never come back against Saders or even Chiefs if we let it slip like we done against Rebels.

Thought we were playing Lions at altitude. Remember they should have beaten Bulls and Stormers had they a kicker, probably should have beaten Blues as well, handling errors cost them. They NOT gonna be easy to beat either. We can’t go travelling the globe and come home 6 days before a big game and think we just gonna walk it. WE gonna be bloody tired. I hope we can. But being really realistic here. Just hope we don’t go the London route buddy. It will never ever benefit Sharks. Saders it will, they have a bye straight after our game.

If we cut down on the errors we can. Get our lineouts, PASS when its on. DEFENCE must be hundreds. Yes then we can. Go Sharks. 😎

  • @robdylan (Comment 68) : Lambie was great though. 6 out of 6 kicks. He must be knocking on Morne’s door for the Bok jersey. 😎 With his all round game being far better now with the kicking well. I would select Pat for the wc. Would not even think about it. Hope PdV is watching.

  • I didn’t see the Saders play, but come on… They’re always a strong team. Then again, we were pretty poor against the Rebels and can play 10 times better than that. I just hate this mindset of ‘we can’t beat them’. Everyone was saying last week that the Rebels couldn’t beat us… They refused to believe that and bloody nearly DID beat us as a result.

I’m not stupid, guys. I know how good the Crusaders are. But if we’re going to concede defeat before we’ve taken the field then we are no better than the Cheetahs and might as well forfeit our two remaining tour games and go home and put our feet up.

Everyone goes on about the Saders as though they never have poor games. Let’s not forget round 1 against the Blues…

  • @robdylan (Comment 77) : I remember the game against the Blues. Think Blues were lucky Saders were still finding their feet so to speak. NO team would have beaten Saders this weekend. I MEAN none. They were unbelievable. Try and get the game and watch it.

We can beat them, if we cut down on the mistakes like I mentioned above. Yes we can, we have the players do take em.

I was one that never took Rebels for granted.

Rob, have to take a business call from London. Back in 30min.

    GO SHARKS. πŸ™‚

  • Reading some of the comments makes my blood boil. Why would we want to compromise 3 games? Do we need the payout that much? At what cost will that payout come? A four week away tour to Australasian is tough enough, now some people think we should now fly to the UK, play our game on Sunday, come back to SA on Monday, rest on Tuesday and only start preparing for a game against a very good team that wants our blood on Wednesday! By agreeing to play in the UK we risk losing the game against the Crusaders, Stormers at home which also means Stormers away as they are a different prospect at Newlands (Lions the following week as well). Stick to your guns Plum..the Crusaders game is an away game (chances of losing this game are high), we don’t have to risk our home games. We need the best preparation for our home games. With current schedule, we could be home by Saturday night, rest on Sunday and start preparing for the Stormers game on Monday.
I think some of the bloggers here suffer from β€œStormer syndrome” …..think their team is invincible. The same bloggers thought the Rebels would be a walk in the park..wake up..this is Super Rugby and things can go pear shaped just like that.

Spare a thought for the Crusaders they will not play at home all season. So that’s 14 away games on the trot ! 😯

Hats off to those chaps if they are in the mix come finals time ! 😎

The sharks can only win if they keep it with the forwards otherwise it’s curtains

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 82) : Amen to that. At least someone can see it the way I do. It is the TRAVEL that will cost us. Not that I am not supporting our team. I am always supporting them. Here I am being very realistic about this. The travel to London could cost us 3 games. Gonna be tough against Saders in NZ never mind in London when we are tired. We are the team that has done the travelling for almost 4 weeks. WE have to think about our home games against Stormers and Lions when we return. which will ever ever be easy. Saffa against saffa is damn tough. We have to be as fresh as we can against those teams. We go to London we will only be home on the Tuesday. 5 days before a game against the Stormers at the Tank is not enough time. Stormers are only 2 points behind us. WE have to try and win our conference at all costs. Lions gonna be tough to beat as well.

Agree 100%, not in the Sharks interest to make the extra travel.

However, I do think that we can beat any team on the day, if we bring our A game.
