A decsion has been made to move the Rugby World Cup 2011 games that were originally planned for Christchurch. This comes in the light of the damage done to the stadium by the massive earthquake that hit the region on 22 February.

The two quarter finals scheduled to be played in Christchurch will be moved to Eden Park, Auckland. The pool games will be reallocated to other venues around the country. Existing ticket holders will be given the option of either a refund or tickets to wherever the matches are moved to.

In a review performed on the stadium to assess the damage done, it was reported that the stadium requires extensive repairs to its infrastructure and playing surface, and that risks in repairing the stadium included availability of labour and material as well as the possibility of aftershocks that could derail the entire operation.

This is a sad time for Christchurch and its rugby supporters who were looking forward to this tournament as much as we all are.

In other news, New Zealand are looking to arrange a friendly fund raising international game to raise funds for the Christchurch relief programme, in those few weeks between the end of the Super Rugby tournament and the start of the Tri Nations. More on this as we get information.
