The win over the weekend against the Melbourne Rebels would not have convinced a lot of supporters, but we all should remember that a team that wins when it is playing badly is a championship team. Here are a few of the stats from that game:

The Sharks’ defence dropped below the 90% efficiency level for the first time, managing 88% against the Rebels and leaking its first tries of the tournament. 124 tackles in total were attempted and 15 were missed, of which 11 were missed by our backline. The worst of the offenders were Stefan Terblanche who missed 4 of his 17 attempts, and Charl McLeod who missed 3 of his 11. Amongst the forwards Keegan Daniel and Willem Alberts each missed 2. The Rebels kept the Sharks at bay with only 8 misses in 129 attempts.

The handling errors stat of last week’s win over the Force was a cause for concern, but this week they cut it down to only 12 errors from the 250 handles. The Rebels’ handling was under par at 20 drops. Charl McLeod amazingly spilled only twice in the entire game where he handled the ball 60 times.

The Sharks gained 754m on the day, compared to the 754m of the Rebels, with Louis Ludik and Willem Alberts each reaching more than 100m. The linebreaks stat continues to impress with 11 this week, with Keegan Daniel accounting for 4 of those! In the backs, Stefan Terblanche and Lwazi Mvovo chipped in with 2 each.

  • it is amazing that both teams made the same meters, shows how even the game was.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 4) : i thought john had a solid game. but the way people were speaking about him i thought i missed something. he could have even been better than jannie, that has missed a few tackles and been very pedestrian at times.

  • Must be pondered, aren’t the player getting fatigued…only 4 games in but we really need to rotate…maybe deysel to replace Alberts for a rest…smit at 2, bissy for a rest…and let’s trust our players to do the Job…

  • @BoerSeun (Comment 10) : deysel still injured. 3 more games til the bye. that bye comes at the perfect time for the sharks. sharks need to look at peaking in the next few games then start again, after the bye.

  • @try time (Comment 6) :
Me too, but then Im not a front row guru at all. What I did see though was that Johns side of the scrum was anchored and not going backwards – to me that is good but Im sure there will be many out there that will be able to try and convince me that that was actually not so good.

And then making 11 from 11 tackles is great.
