Rumour confirmed

The Sharks have confirmed the rumour that has been doing the rounds about Marius Joubert joining them. Sharks CEO Brian van Zyl has confirmed that the 31 year old centre has joined the Sharks on a two year deal.

In an article by Mike Greenaway in the Mercury today, van Zyl said that Joubert would join up with his new team mates as soon as the French Top 14 finishes.

Joubert’s club, Clermont Auvergne, is leading the standings, and should they make the final of the competition on 4 June, he will only be able to join after. This still puts the player in prime position to play in the final round robin games, which end on 18 June against the Bulls.

Joubert was instrumental in the 2004 Tri Nations title that the Springboks won, where he scored THAT hat trick against the All Blacks.

We look forward to Marius joining us and we wish him all the best for his last few months at Clermont.

  • Well done. Do you guys think that we are buying the more senior players to balance the young guns in the team?

Only thing that makes sense to me.

  • Well he is doing brilliantly in France apparently, but then again, the Top 14 isn’t Super rugby.

  • Welcome Marius, Hopefully you can add some much needed centre experience to our side; and also help teach our young talent coming through a thing or two about senior rugby and doing so successfully in the centre positions.

If we sign Cooke i think i will go mad…i understand Marius in order to close the gap between our current centres and the ones coming through who are only 18 and 20 years old, so when he is done with his contract we will have two awesome young and capable centres in the form of Paul Jordaan and Lindeque with the mix of experience ; Adi Jacobs and Meyer Bosman. Not a bad signing when i think about it; but not Cooke please…we don’t need him.

Its a name the Galille “Paarl Boishaaiers” gave us and it is all about the colour of our jerseys, We call them “GalPille” because they turn bitter when they loose.

This come from many moons ago and still very much in use today.

You have a “GalPil” already, Conrad Hoffman.

See our Bloedworse will play Easter at Kearsney College, was suppose to play Grey Bloem there but they did not want to play us twice in a week, we play them in the Wilde Klawer also and look like we’ll only play Glenwood at the Kearsney tournament.

Sharks have made a very good buy here and he brings with him wealth of experience and that can’t be bought ..See Stefan Terblanche.

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 47) : Richard, the big one Wildeklawer is in Kimberley. Most of the top rugby schools attend this festival – the notable exception is Bishops and perhaps Framesby of P.E. should make way for either Grey PE / Selborne or perhaps even Queens.

If you want to see most of the KZN teams at one fest, Grey High in PE is the place to be at the beginning of April – College, MHS, Hilton, Westville, DHS and Kearsney are involved there.

At roughly the same time there is a fest for u14/u15/u16 up at M/College in PMB – here you can get a look at the prospects from KZN and a few other regions. Unfortunately most of the best SA schools send there u16s to a festival in Paarl and will therefore be absent from PMB (a real pity).

The Kearsney Festival in Bothas Hill near Hillcrest is the only one in KZN but one of a number of Easter Festivals (There are at least 4 up in the Gauteng). However with the schools it’s managed to attract incl 4 of last yr’s “champion” schools, the Kearsney Festival is widely regarded as the best one this year.

Bear in mind that when you attend one of these for the first time every face is strange one esp if you’re not a parent or a relative and I believe that like any other sport, much of the enjoyment comes from knowing the participants, so have patience, the more you watch, the more you get into it. The good thing is when you see a schoolboy player who’s cut above the rest, chances are very good that you’ll recognise him immediately in u19s and u21s when you see him again.

  • @CoffeeshopBok;-) (Comment 45) : Know Marius very well. Marius did not even make WP Craven week and had to go the Boland route, through their youth teams and find in Wayne Julies a formidable midfield partnet with coach Rudi Joubert. After a good season alla Dewaldt Duvenhage got his WP and Stormers contract. He and De Wet Barry (a few years older them him and Jean de Villiers a few years younger then him at Paarl Gym) get picked by Jake White at the start of his Bok career coach. Jake and Fester (vd Merwe) overplayed him in one season (remember his hat trick against the All Blacks at Ellispark) and his body broke down more then anything it had to do with Mossie appearance. Luckily at Clermont they have two sqauds running (T14 and Heineken Cup) and gave him enough time to recover. He doop (baptised?) his first born earlier this year and had problems getting his visum sorted and got back one week later then expected. That sort of change his mind to get back to SA and wants to be closer to his family. He had offers from the Lions aswell but at the end the family farm at Joubertina closer to Durban plus the Durban lifestyle probably won the Sharks race for him.

Good luck to him and he is one hell of a addition for the Sharks and have the Gimmie Guts caracter to give his all to the Sharks.

@Rob: Where is that tall timber Gimmie lock these days?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 47) : Myself have a passion walking the line and watching schoolboy rugby, probably the best rugby to watch and will rather spend on weekends watching this then S15 rugby on TV.

The schoolboy season starts always with the Easter weeks. Just to give you an idea the way its done here in Paarl is our U13 kaalvoete, starting preparing since the schools open doing their thing on the practise field twice a week from 06h30 to 08h00 at the morning twice a week to fit in between the summer sports.

    The big easter tournaments:
Kearsney College 21 to 25 April,
Monnas tournament for seccie teams 31 March to 4 April (Outeniqua, Waterkloof, St John’s Boys College, Parktown Boys, Monnas, Diamantveld, Marais Viljoen, Kemptonpark, Paarl Gimnasium two teams (seccies and chippies), Golden Lions Uitnodiging (wat deel gaan neem aan die St John’s Paasrugbyfees) en Kearsney College.)
Tony Stoops festival at President HS 2 – 6 April
    Wynbergs Festival (7-10 April)
    St Stitians Festival (21-25 April)
    Oakdales Festival
    KES festival (21-25 April)
Paarl Gims U16 Tournament and Paarl Boishaai U15 tournament.

  • When the rumor was doing the rounds I said that it didn’t do much for me, but acknowledged the value Marius could bring. Now, the more I think of it, the better it sounds. He can add huge experience and sound ability to the squad and act as mentor to the young blood, not that my two cents really matters, but I approve. Welcome to the family Marius. Now really want to see Swannie hit some form to add real depth at inside centre, he is much better than he is revealing. Our centre combination of Stef and Meyer is one dimensional, we need more there. I am not discrediting Meyer and Stef, but more pressure needs to be placed on them from the squad.
