The Sharks play their last (actually their only) game in New Zealand against the Chiefs this morning before returning home.

The Sharks are sitting on 4 wins from 4, while the Chiefs are sitting on 1 win from 4. That 1 win may have come against the Rebels but it also happens to have been their only home game of the season. Don’t read too much into the formbook for the Chiefs this early in the season.

Sharks to win by about 5 points after giving us yet another heart attack.

  • Half time summary: And so, while the Sharks defence has been superb and their forwards have rumbled the ball up well, the Chiefs are looking dangerous and if we don’t respect the possession we get, and we keep handing it over to them, eventually you feel that they’ll break thru and score. The slippery ball doesn’t make it any easier. But I’m sure Plumtree’s talk will be about keeping the ball close to the forwards and stop aimlessly kicking it.

  • Poor conditions, poor ref, poor tactics, poor handling, poor performance. We got one point and only conceded 6 points to points difference, that will help in the greater scheme of things. The opening phrase applies to both teams… Much work ahead for Twickers game against a very slick ‘saders team. We miss Deysel more than we realise – Sharks MVP.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 343) : Yes sure that is for this weekend, and we could concede the top position for this next week or so, but from an overall perspective losing closely might prove a big factor (other losing outright – looking for a positive from a game we should’ve won) – as for the ref, we all have our opinions, I thought he missed quite a few handling areas, and the breakdown management was not all that great, he wasn’t poor, but typing on mobile made the communication easier to manage (poor ref, poor tactics etc)

  • i definitely am looking forward to the saders game. it will be a true test of how good the sharks actually are. so far we have beaten force blues rebels cheetahs, but none were powerhouses. rebels and cheetahs have both been beaten regularly. blues and force tied. if you really look at the sharks have yet to play a top team and they haven’t looked great. this week plumtree says you can’t keep playing ugly rugby and expect to win everything and his prediction came true. so a true test on how good the sharks are is to test them against the best in the competition at the moment, and we get that in the next 2 games. the sharks could be on the start of a losing streak. if they don’t seriously get their heads out their asses they could go into the bye 8 games 4wins 4 losses.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 354) : lets be honest both the centers have been below par all season. on attack they pass the ball wide without drawing defenders leaving the wings with 3 defenders to beat. stefan and bosman aren’t looking great on defence. i would also like to see pat attack the gain line a little more. kankowski has been average this season. charl is making too many mistakes and hoffman has not played more than 100 minutes of rugby in how many months? the du plessis are starting to get punchy again (especially when both are on the field together)and jannie offers nothing expect a good tight head. john is looking slow. ludik is playing like stefan did last year, up and under all your possession away. the sharks are better than this and plumtree has got to start taking the players to task. i would drop stefan move jlp into 12 and bosman out one. and i would drop kankowski to sharks xv when deysel gets back.

Mcleod was awful ,one or two great touches doesnt make up for an erratic game-he needs to act with greater compusure in d making.
Mid field looked much better when jacobs went to 13 at ST went to fb.
    I thought Lambie was great.
I wouldnt mind having Odwa at Fb and finding a good wing ,not sure about richards 😛
Thats all I have to say ,not completely shocked we lost ,I think the team should consider this a blessing in disguise ,now they know their problems ,platform to work from.

  • @try time (Comment 356) : I reckon our biggest problem is a lack of strategic thinking. Why didn’t Stef or Smit get the guys together today and change things when they saw that what we were doing wasn’t working?

The sensible thing, especially with about 15-20 minutes to go, would have been to kick the ball into the corners and playing all the rugby in their half. Instead we kicked every ball up into the sky in the middle of the field and, with the chasing as kak as it was, finding ourselves defending for dear life in our territory. Either that or players not passing the ball when there were opportunities outside. Just about every one of our players are guilty of this, but the biggest culprits today were Bissie, Kanko, Bosman and Adi.

Stupid rugby and no wonder that we lost, because the Chiefs used their heads and the space available way better than us.

  • A bad game was due. If we won all our games on tour chances are we were going to lose a game or two, back home. We rather lose a game now than at the end of the season. When we won the currie cup we went through a few purple patches and we can expect a few this season. All is not lost. Our defence was superb. I think it was just a matter of wrong game plans. Lessons will be learnt rather than learning lessons at the end of the season.

I don’t think we played particularly well, but we certainly didn’t play absolutely crappily either… just a LOT of mitigating circumstances, not the least of which was the skating rink disguised as a rugby field… There’s still a LONG way to go, and the next match is bound to be a corker…

Our set piece needs a lot of work, our midfield needs more injection – well, we all know our rugby, so not going to harp on about what needs work, I just trust that we get it right. Burden needs to be employed as a game breaker, we are lacking punch in vital areas…

That’s not an excuse for today’s lacklustre skid-fest, but an observation. I think once next Sunday’s cruncher is out of the way, normal service will be resumed… we have TWO byes coming up, don’t forget (April 16 and May 14) which means we’ll get an additional 8 points for doing zilch… and all those home games in a row… So much to look forward to!
