Can we all just stop panicking, please?

I can’t actually sum up my current thoughts any better than our good mate war1 did… “Amazing how the Sharks have gone from being conference favourites to losing games we haven’t even played yet.” I think it’s time that we, as fans, put the Chiefs performance behind us and get fully behind the team for the next game, as though it were their last.

All this talk about how the Stormers already have one hand on the trophy is starting to get a little tired. The Cape side have done well – let’s not take that away from them – but they are, in reality, in a slightly worse position than the Sharks right now, whatever the log may suggest. They have yet to tour and they have already enjoyed their bye, after all and while they may currently be ahead on the log, by the slenderest of margins, they may well find it hard to maintain that lead once they too leave South Africa.

That’s not really the point, though. Why are we even discussing the Stormers? Sure, the media have felt a change in the way the wind is blowing and have decided to write the Sharks off en masse, but that’s hardly surprising, because they always do after a poor performance. Last time I checked, though, the Sharks play the Crusaders in an absolutely historic match this weekend, not the Stormers. What does it matter which side is better right now, since we don’t play them right now and as we’ve all seen, two weeks can be a ridiculously long time in Super Rugby.

The Sharks have a number of hugely positive things going for them. They’ve managed to secure 11 points on tour so far (that’s very nearly three wins’ worth) and have the added bonus of being able to take a refreshed team to face the Crusaders at a neutral venue. Once that game is over, they then face a short trip back to the country ahead of their next game – far shorter than a nightmare trip back from Canterbury would have been. The naysayers need to actually grow up and count their blessings along with the rest of us now – as they join us in ALL getting behind the Sharks ahead of this weekend’s game. This London game gives us a far better chance of beating the Crusaders than we would have had with a tired team in the fourth match of a long tour, in their own backyard.

I know the many thousands of London-based Sharks fans will be backing our team to the hilt. It would be nice if some of the more fickle ones in South Africa could join in. The boys are going to come over the this side and give the Crusaders a hell of a good game, knowing full-well that if they play to their potential, they will win. Any thoughts about facing any other team in the weeks to come can wait, because the quickest way to get hammered in Super Rugby is to start pontificating about any game other than your next one.

Be careful, Crusaders – the Sharks are coming to London to take you down.

  • Too true rob too true..rugby has is a weird game and anytthin can happen..the stormers have scored one try in 3 games..a better team will put them in their place..

Was speakin to a colluege who stayed in the same hotel as the sharks for the chiefs game and one thing that stood out was the distraction he saw in the team..the night before they were in the hotel partying to all hours..this game was a wake up call for the boys..knowin that u can’t just pitch up and expect to win..
Having said that I will go n wear my sharks shirt like I do every weekend and support the boys..I know they can do it..hard work and drive..

  • I always back the boys to win everygame. We have an awesome, deep squad…great management and a very well conditioned squad thanks to the great work done by Mark Steele and all those involved with conditioning the guys…so why not win everygame. I am expecting The Sharks to give a commited effort on Sunday and beat the Crusaders.

  • @Jarson (AddicteD) (Comment 1) : because unlike the bulls (of old)the sharks hasn’t been able to put away teams when needed. the bulls had a horrendous start in 2007 but came back and won the tournament. the sharks were in the same situation last year and lack of bonus points and poor decision making left the sharks short of the playoffs. 2009 sharks were top of the log only to blow the lead and get blasted out the competition. i think the panic comes from seeing this all before. but on the bright side, the more we doubt the sharks, the more they are the under dogs. and no teams love being underdogs more than the sharks.

  • Stormers normally travel well. They play Chiefs, Blues, Brumbies and Rebels on tour. I expect them to beat Chiefs, Brumbies and Rebels. Can’t see them losing to those teams. The only team that could beat them is Blues. Then they beat the Blues lasst year in one of their best games played.

like i posted on one of the threads , all the sharks need is one bonus point to have a 12 point gain from a 4 match tour outside of SA

We also now back at home where the other teams must still tour,, why the panicking lord above knows

this tournament is still a baby , and a looooooong way to go

We should have beaten the Chiefs. We a better side. Now we travel the world before we get to play to top team in our conference. Gonna be tough buddy. This travel to London to play Saders could put us on the back foot.

  • I dont think people knock the Sharks or write them off – merely expressing opinion on their worries. Life is not all roses – surely we can say when you’ve been pricked by a thorn – having said that – without personal attacks.

Sorry but I dont believe that that is the way to go. Jy kan nie heuning smeer as daar ‘n paar korrels peper in die mond moet gegooi word nie! 😈 People need to see when their fans are worried. Off course in a constructive critism way. The fact that I am worried about a few points, does really not mean that I am not behind the boys, nor kncoking them or writing them off. It’s just a discussion.

  • War1 is a Sharks worrier (no that isn’t a spelling mistake) Go and look at the comments before War1’s (his was comment 14) Nothing in there leads me to believe we made any comment closely representing the negativety that War1 said we did.

There is a saying in Afr. That doesn’t quite translate into English “waar die hart van vol is loop die mond van oor”

Nobody is in a state of panic, and I’m not even going to say “yet”, because that state won’t come.

  • isn’t sport heavily reliant on emotion? don’t we go to the games for the electric atmosphere? don’t we go through a 101 emotions each game? isn’t that why we are fans? if we all watched sport emotionless, wouldn’t we all support the strongest team? lets be honest how many people would buy themselves a shirt that advertises 5 different brands for R700. but are quick to snap up a team rugby jersey no matter how crap it looks. this is not logical, it is emotional. so to tell fans not to be emotional is telling people not to be fans.

  • The problem here is: Everbody or most of the fans, believes that we have allready lost to the Crusaders and that going to London is a waste of energy which could rather have been spend on the Stormers. Sure we might lose against the Saders and the Stormers as a result, but the same thing couldve happened if we stayed in New Zealand. Get behind your team guys, and show them what a true fan really is.

  • Seems my “Loss my sharkies uit… asseblief” thread was a tad premature, because the naysayers have apparently only just woken up. Perhaps it was the long weekend and all or the fact that our match was played on Friday morning, and that we have only just found out that SuperPat gave someone the finger without even knowing it, to the finger’s obvious detriment… Whatevva… Yes, we are all worried about this weekend’s match, and I think it safe to say ALL of us hate it when the boys lose, but does that mean we have to take to the streets wailing, tearing our hair out and pronouncing the Stormers unbeatable and odds-on winners?
There’s nout wrong in voicing our concerns, like Ice says, in a constructive and even fairly critical way, but mass paranoia and panic in black and white? Nooooo. Pleaseeeee!
Much as I adore him, laud him and otherwise liken him to a rugby messiah, our Pat is not the team but merely an integral part of it. We have incredible depth at our disposal and some truly awesome talent available to us, so why are so many of us doing the headless chicken? I may not be JLP’s biggest fan, but he’s a Shark, and therefore gets my support without question, especially if he has to step in at No 10 at short notice and make us proud… What a huge task that man will have stepping into Pat’s shoes, even if only for 80 minutes. He deserves our support and commitment as much as anyone who wears the Black and White.
We, being us, collectively, the supporters, the fans, have the ability to lift our team to the highest pinnacle of success by backing them to the hilt, unquestioningly, placing our own concerns on the back burner in order to put the interests of OUR team first and foremost, come rain or shine. And yet there is an element of us, albeit small, who seemingly doubt everything and apparently enjoy doing so? Why? So what if we played crap this time last year? So what if we bombed out for the last 15 years running? That was then. This is now. Dragging the past into the present is senseless and is like dragging your last relationship into your current one, and all future ones until you self-destruct, alone in an alley somewhere, riddled with guilt and a rotten liver…
Am I overplaying the hand? YOU BET?
WE HAVE AN AWESOME TEAM. SO STOP WHINING AND START SUPPORTING. EVEN IF IT KILLS YOU TO DO SO!
    Here endeth the lesson.

  • @Original Champion (Comment 43) : Not so. There’s nothing wrong in being concerned, but there are ways and means of letting that concern show. I am concerned. I didn’t like what I saw last Friday, but I am not writing the team off as a result of it, or predicting doom and gloom from hereon in.
Let’s all be concerned, together, if it helps (and in many ways it’s better than being over-confident) but let’s also realise that negative energy begets negative energy, so we need to find some positivity to balance it all out with, if you get me. And there really is lots to be positive about, if we take a proper look.

    SANZARs official clarification.

    Points awarded in bye round

SANZAR wishes to clarify the system of awarding four points to teams when they have a bye.

The rationale is that it ensures the respective Conference tables provide a more accurate picture of the relative rankings of teams each week through the regular season. If a team has a bye in week one of Super Rugby they will remain behind the other teams in total points available to be earned until all other teams have a bye.

If there were no points awarded, it would make a much better point because the point of the competition is to score points rather than be given points for not scoring points to compensate for the fact that others have more points. • The origin of the points for byes system are from the Aussie NRL.

We all know how difficult it is to tell who is drunker, the players or the spectators, so I think in an effort to make it easier for the Aussies to understand the log with one glance they came up with this system.

This system ALWAYS sees teams on level footing after each round, thus eliminating the need for a drunk Aussie to try and take games in hand into account.

The flipside of the coin where us sane intelligent people from RSA have to try and look at a log that shows the Waratahs have points than they could have scored from the matches they have won didn’t occur to them. πŸ˜•

  • Wait with all these byes let’s put a scenario. I’m not sure who gets a bye in the final week but I’ll just make the scenario up. Imagine its a four team tie at the top of the final conference. With none of the four teams playing each other. Now team 5 is 3 points behind but has a bye. So technically if all four teams lose their final match, team 5 can just sit at home and top the conference! Now that would be interesting.

I remember that one time, last year, when the media and 90% of SA rugby supporters wrote off the Sharks, they went on and beat the (Stormpoppies) WeePee 30 – 10 in the CC final.
