Intensity is the key

In a recent interview with Christo Buchner from SuperSport, John Smit summed up what a lot of us have been trying to put into words since the unexpected reversal against the Chiefs last week – a defeat that has placed so much more significance on Sunday’s game against the Crusaders.

β€œThat really was not necessary. We should have won that one and let ourselves down badly. We never played with the required intensity and paid the price,” Smit is quoted as saying and while he goes on to admit that it would have been easier – or more comfortable – for the Sharks if they’d had the luxury of a five-win cushion going into the Crusaders match, I feel that in some ways, the Chiefs loss might just work out to be a blessing in disguise.

Trust me, the Sharks are under no illusions as to how much harder they’ve made things for themselves by not pitching in Hamilton. Despite all the warnings, the minds were clearly elsewhere and having surrendered pole position on the log to the Stormers, they know that they really need to beat the Crusaders to seize the initiative back from their Cape rivals. Far from being a game that the Sharks could lose (and would be expected to lose), the London clash is now far closer to a “must win”.

I don’t believe we have yet seen the Sharks reach the same heights in this year’s Super Rugby competition that they did in the knockout phases of the Currie Cup; that is a plateau to which they are still aspiring and the worrying thing for their opponents is that the team sees the next three games as an important peaking phase, before their first bye. For them to replicate that form – and those results – bringing the required intensity to each and every thing that they do is the first and most important step. The key for them, now, is to move on from the Chiefs loss quickly and start building a new winning streak, starting with the Crusaders on Sunday.

The festival nature of the game, of course and the significance behind the venue change, which is so much bigger than just rugby or the Super 15, will add a whole slew of new dynamics to the complex mixture of emotions that motivate – and sometimes hinder – all of the players involved. While both sides will be keen to steer clear of the sideshows to an extent and simply focus on the rugby, I don’t think it’s going to be particularly easy for anyone involved not to be overawed by the occasion to some extent. That factor, perhaps, deserves some thought, though. Perhaps the wider significance of this fixture DOES make the result less important? I never thought I’d say this, but from a Sharks perspective (and I know some of the players feel the same way) playing this game at Twickenham is about far more than getting a result – it’s simply “the right thing to do” for our brothers and sisters in Christchurch.

None of that really changes the basic recipe for our boys, though. It’s still the same game played between four white lines and if we can lift the intensity and play the game we know how to play, with as few mistakes as possible, we stand every chance of returning with a win. Come on, Sharks, let’s show the world exactly how good we are!

  • a loss ‘blessing in disguise’? That is loser talk!

The sharks lost to the worst performing team in new zealand, there’s nothing beneficial about a LOSS…

The bulls prolly thought losing to the highlanders was also a boon ‘in disguise’ next thing they got 2 Ls on the bounce @ home…

    The sharks lost period!

  • Well I`ll be honest. The loss against the Chiefs was a massive disappointment for me. We`re facing an uphill battle now untill the bye.

I know it`s early days but remember it is crucial to have homeground advantage come semi final time. We do not want to go down to NZ for that, we`ve tried it before and just doesn`t work.

  • It’s still early days in the competition, and technically still an away game for the sharks, I am not convinced it’s a ‘must win’ game, I think it’s a ‘must get a bonus point(maybe two)’ game.

Watching the saders replays , we have to counter attack their offloads in some way ,thats what is really dangerous! Their go to man in SBW and he gets the ball away to any near player ,I say keep it tight ,lets not give them the luxury of having extra men in the backline ,we can win this at the breakdown and how we manipulate it . It is crucial that we commit more men to it, i forsee the pick and drive tactic being used alot by the sharks forwards

  • Playing in London in what has become a charity match for a good cause, and with so much to prove is more a disadvantage to the Crusaders than the Sharks. I’m happy for the Sharks to be underdogs, they usually surprise people that way.

By the way, the two douchebags above really need to get a room, the way they lovingly agree with each other. I’m no IT expert but I’m willing to bet actually it’s one person.
