The Sharks coach has named a team with only two changes to face the Stormers this weekend at Mr Price Kings Park, with John Smit dropping to the bench and Beast starting, and JP Pietersen starting ahead of Lwazi Mvovo on the wing.

Eugene van Staden has been drafted onto the bench to cover both prop positions and John Smit covering the hooker position. JL Potgieter has been passed fit to start after his injury scare. This leaves Meyer Bosman in the centres.

3. Jannie du Plessis
4. Steven Sykes
5. Alistair Hargreaves
6. Keegan Daniel

9. Charl McLeod
10. Jacques-Louis Potgieter
11. JP Pietersen
12. Meyer Bosman
13. Stefan Terblanche (Capt)
14. Odwa Ndungane
15. Louis Ludik

Replacements
16. John Smit
17. Eugene van Staden
18. Gerhard Mostert
19. Jacques Botes
20. Conrad Hoffmann
21. Adrian Jacobs
22. Lwazi Mvovo

  • Good to see Beast starting, but I would’ve liked to see Bosman at 10. Let’s hope JLP can get his kicking boots on this saturday. GO SHARKS!!

  • Stringest team available for the day. Sorry to see John dropping off to the bench but beast probably provides a stronger scrumming option for the first 50 minutes of the game.

  • It would be interesting to see a straight swap between the current 10/12 axis but it’s probably not too wise experimenting against the Stormers currently.

  • @Crock (Comment 1) : Feel the same, really thought Bosman was quite good when he shifted over to fh. Not so sure about JLP. Though he has only had one game starting for the Sharks and it was against the best team in this tourney. So he does need to get another chance. Hope he gets his kicks over this week. Cause P. Grant not gonna miss any for the Stormers much like Carter never missed any. Any problems at fh then move Bosman over and bring on Adi.

Heck we miss Lambie for the big games.

    Go Sharks.

  • This is going to be another massive South African derby. The Stormers have the motivation of beating us at home, after 5/6 years, and keeping the unbeaten run going. The Sharks need a win to get back within striking distance – add the bye (4 points) and a win on Sat and this look rosy again!

I think that the battle will be won in two areas – the forwards battle – I think we have an advantage from the CC final last year – if we play with that fire, the stormers would be able to respond. And two, the centres. Bosman and Stefan have their work cut out for them, not to mention De Jongh coming on for the final 25min.

I cannot believe I ahve turned down box tickets for this…

  • Why is everyone on about preferring Bosman at 10? If we kept chopping and changing the side based on one decent 40 minute performance we’d never get anywhere. I even read earlier that someone wanted Hoffman to start in place of Charl ๐Ÿ™„

Yes Bosman did a good job, but you have to take it in context. Our forwards gave us a much better platform in the 2nd half with Beast on, we were down in the game and had to go for it. Crusaders also took their foot off the gas a bit. Same thing with Hoffman, he had a small cameo and did well but that doesn’t justify starting with him.

  • @Villie (Comment 34) : agree… I honestly feel that once you’ve given a guy the jersey – particularly a flyhalf – he needs to play himself out of the team over a few weeks.

  • @robdylan (Comment 35) : Spot on. No use playing him one week, dropping him the next…then the next 10 has a shocker and then you drop him. Doesn’t work that way.

The reason Jake White was so successful was that he identified early who his best 15 players were and stuck with them, he built a team of experienced players. He was stubborn, didn’t listen to outsiders and basically said you’re in for an extended run and will have to play yourself out of the team.

Plum is using a similar formula. I do agree with Dancing Bear from another post that he will need to rotate and rest some players soon. Someone like Alberts will need a rest as he has been a battering ram in every game. That’s why it’s great to have Deysel back in the mix.

  • @Ben (Comment 40) : Exactly. Played himself out of the team, as Rob said. There’s a fine line, though, between giving your flyhalf time to sort his game out and settle down, and deciding enough is enough when he’s plainly not up to scratch and that his lack of form is taking the team down with him. Personally I think the Lions have waited too long.
We have the luxury of knowing that our fab flyhalf will be back in a couple of weeks, but this Saturday’s match is crucial, and could hinge on a good kicking performance. Which is a huge worry. And added pressure for JLP.

  • @Villie (Comment 37) : Couldn’t agree more. And in some respect, although I would have preferred it to have happened in less painful circumstances, SuperPat being out for three weeks now on a “forced rest” could stand us in good stead later on in a more critical stage of the competition while at the same time getting JLP to a better stage of match awareness and “fitness”, thereby strengthening our depth in that position.
Which, compared to where we were this time last year, is quite awesome! ๐Ÿ˜†

i still feel we should have enough to beat the stormers, but there should be a better kicking display from JLP or MB.
