Sharks succumb to first home loss

The Sharks’ winless streak continued as the Stormers came to Durban and dominated a hapless Sharks line up that seemed tired and clueless in a game that never reached the spectacle it was billed to be. This was the Sharks’ first loss at home this season.

The Stormers scored the only try of the match through Schalk Burger early in the first half, after which the Sharks could never close the gap to fewer than seven points.

The Stormers were first on the board with a penalty from Peter Grant after Jannie du Plessis got blown up at scrum time. Grant eased it over from right in front. The Sharks managed to strike back with a penalty soon after, but that was the closest we got to the lead all game. The Sharks were stunned straight after that with a well worked try by the Stormers through Schalk Burger, who was set up by a break by Jacque Fourie.

Charl McLeod butchered a try scoring opportunity by not seeing the man on his inside and then held onto the ball and conceded the penalty. An easy penalty opportunity was missed by Potgieter in the 24th minute, which could have had the Sharks closer on the scoreboard.

Peter Grant capitalized on the Sharks’ poor discipline and duly slotted another penalty, stretching the lead to ten points with minutes remaining in the first half. Potgieter had the opportunity to draw the Sharks closer before half time and managed to hit the post, where after Bismarck managed to collect and somehow lost it again. A few minutes later Potgieter was lining up another and this how managed to convert from 50m out. That was to be the last point of the half and coach John Plumtree will be having a few stern words with his players at the break.

The second half started off much the same way as the first half went as the Sharks kicked aimlessly and lineouts were abysmal with very little communication between Bis and his jumpers.

Ten minutes into the second half the rain started coming down and it wasn’t long before Grant got the scoreboard working again, the Sharks being penalized for going offside, which stretched the lead back to ten points.

Changes early in the second half saw Eugene van Staden, Gerhard Mostert and Adi Jacobs coming on for Jannie du Plessis, Al Hargreaves and Louis Ludik, with Stefan Terblanche moving to fullback and Adi taking his place at centre.

With the wet weather came even worse handling from the Sharks as they battled to string together three passes before the ball went to ground. John Smit came on for Beast Mtawarira with 20 minutes to play, in the hope of some calming influence coming from the legendary captain.

The more the Sharks tried to play attacking rugby, the more they seemed to make a hash of it as attack after attack was halted due to their inability to keep ball in hand, not to mention the fact that Bismarck’s lineout throwing was the worst I have seen in my days at Kings Park, along with the lineout calling going out the door when Hargreaves left the park.

All in all a poor performance from the Sharks, and congratulations must go to the Stormers for dominating the Sharks in all aspects of the game and keeping their unbeaten run in the Super Rugby season so far.

  • 😈 What can you say after a pathetic performance like that??. Then they complain that they are tired. Wow!…I didint know traveling first class and going on awsome overseas trips can be so demanding on the body.Shame. Rediculous!!!.There goes my weekend!.

Dunno way the line outs has been such an achilles heel this season ?? Dumbfounded by it really..scored two great tries from driving mauls vs cheetahs, vut haven’t really been able to use it again..scored one against force..but it such a bvig weapon for us,the driving maul..

  • @bergshark (Comment 12) : lineouts were not good indeed though I would not blame the loss onn this aspect. The lineouts were much better than in our first 2 outings, which the Sharks won.
Lack of creativity I guess, and missed kicks (though the Sharks unlike the Bulls never had 100% metronom). For the record I will support JLP as long as he is in black and white but I am yet to receive an answer why he was brought into the squad.

I also felt that when the opportunities presented itself the Sharks were hesitant (unlike thenselves).

  • well , not gonna lie , kinda saw this one comming ,forwards to me tried hard

backline as usual costing us dearly

    worst culprits 9 and 10

i have been worrying about Mcleod for some time now , his option taking is not very good at times

JLP is a disaster to be honest , problem is we dont really have another unless we do now go for bosman at 10

now i know some will chew my head off , but letting cockott go was a huge mistake, we could have had a sound 2nd option for goal kicker with lambie 1st choice

but yeah mistakes cost us and it cost us last week too, sooner or later we better start taking note of this and sorting it out or we can kiss the super 15 good bye

  • -Useless commitment
-Smit is crap at prop and should only play 2!!!
-Botes needs to start in place of keegs so that we can compete a breakdown
-shame on the fans there tonight…my voice is gone and the guys next to me were whispering to each other…disgrace!!!
-keep ball in hand and play basics!!!!
-Charl needs to pass and stop going for glory…then he won’t knock so much…he was useless to be honest.
-Kanko needs to man up and show some aggression
-Sykes and hargreaves were very poor; mostert has to start next week so sykes can’t call lineouts…crap lineout calls’ deep when it is wet?????!!!?/!?!?
-Stef can play 15 not 13…Adi gets the backs going forward and stef wastes every opportunity we create….just run staraight..draw the man…pass…get it?!
-Would love to see Ndungane at 15.
    – also need Sykes to refresh..get him out and put skeate on the bench.
-Lineouts…all started with the calls made from Sykes… and seemed to be a real lack of cohesion.
-We need Deysel back next week!!! Competes at breakdown and runs through walls. Alberts at 8…kanko bench.
-don’t know what to say about JLP…very average…
-More Commitment and more team spirit!!!
-Just one more game without Lambie….yay!!!

You let yourselves and your fans down sharks…man up and fix the mistakes, work hard on the training pitch and the Gym and get back to the top where you belong!!! C’mon Sharks…not good enough!!!!

We made so many handling errors and our lineouts are just a complete mess, that has to be sorted out.

We just have to pick ourselves up for next week. Then the bye. Our players need that rest really bad. Hope after our bye we have Lambie back cause this not getting our kicks over is costing us. • They’re looking like and playing like a side – that has not been properly rotated outside the frontrow (Mostert and Hoffmann should’ve started today). Where players are rushed back from injury too soon (JP) and played players when they are injured (all the delayed team announcements, JLP playing this weekend). That has played in three continents in as many weekends. That has had a reduced rest period between their last game and the one before. That is to say, they’re a tired team with no momentum now. Some of them look tired by the 5th minute, nevermind the 75th.

The difference between the best can be very small and they’ve gone out of their way to reduced their chances. Both in player management and schedule changes. No doubt the players will be attacked, but Stefan aside (at 13 anyway) they’re good enough.

This was a very big loss. It’s a conference game and one against the conference leader, so it’s like a double blow. I’m not sure how to approach the Lions now, playing the same team could give the same result. But the team is looking very flat and is coming off the back of three losses, changing some positions, puts more pressure on those guys and doesn’t make things easier.

12 points from the tour was decent. Nil against the conference leaders and things are starting to look a tad desperate. The bye can’t come soon enough.

When I was at boarding school I was taught to support the 1st team for 60min non-stop no matter how well or badly they played. However now like too many Sharks fans, I’m tjoestil esp. when things start looking bleak. This is when our team needs us the most to help make the home advantage count. It will take a huge cultural change but it is much needed. Sharks fans are far too quiet.

  • @Magic Merkin (Comment 62) : They are tired no question about that. Was madness to play Saders in London. I had said from the start it was crazy. We only got home on Monday. Played Saders last Sunday and then the Stormers waiting for us this Saturday? We looked dead on our feet for most of this game. That kinda of travel will take its toll on any team.

Had we played Saders in NZ we would have done it the previous Friday and been back home last Saturday. By the Sunday we would have had two rest days. Instead we travelled to London on the Thursday and play rugby on the Sunday. NO rest at all then travel back to SA straight after the game. Madness.

Anyhow that is all done and dusted. The team needs that rest bad. Still have to face the Lions this week.

  • @Puma (Comment 67) : Yes it isn’t hypotheticals now, ‘what if’ scenarios and the rest. They look flat, have zero momentum and were dead on their feet from the get go.

@Honey Badger (Comment 68) : I still think they’re a good team and capable of going far. You want to be 1st as you can avoid a whole knock out round (between the 3 non conference winners and the lowest placed conference winner) and get a guaranteed home semi. As I said, the differences are small, something that doesn’t seem that big – 5 rest days instead of 7, can be massive. The top two placed conference winners will have a considerable advantage.

  • @RuckingFun (Comment 69) : My support is with our team 100% mate. Just think we should not have accepted to play Saders in London. The time we had after that game and facing Stormers was too little. Saders had a bye this week. They will be just fine. We are looking really tired. Was not a great game to watch tonight. Similar to the game we played against the Chiefs.

Anyhow hope we get up for next week. Hoffman, Adi and Mostert should get a start.

  • Well done to the Stormers. Their D was very good, their kicking game was far better than ours and they did well on their own lineout ball.

I’m a bit old school and when it gets wet I like the idea of kicking for position. But to pull this off you have to be tactically superior to start with like we were in game 1 vs the Cheetahs.

We had some good line breaks in this game and it was disappointing that at least 1 of the runs by McLeod in the 1st half and JLP in the 2nd half didn’t didn’t end in a try. Perhaps something we have to work on here as well, is making sure our communication and linking is of the std required to turn these clean breaks into points.

  • @RuckingFun (Comment 84) : Can’t see Stormers lose much on the road if any. They playing Brumbies/Rebels/Chiefs they should beat all those teams. Only might have a battle with the Blues. Then they could beat the Blues as well. Bulls have a harder time overseas. They face Saders and then the Reds. Bulls should beat the Force though.

From here Sharks can’t afford to lose any. That is massive pressure. Hope we can but it looks like a massive mountain now to climb.

Once we get Deysel and Lambie back think it will make a huge difference.

Right now we doing the silly basic things wrong. Dropping the ball – Lineouts are a mess and NOT passing when it is on. We probably should have started with Botes tonight.

Anyhow hope we can win next week. We lost that one then we out of it. So next weeks game is a must win and we might have to be going for 5 points. Hope we get better weather.

Next weeks game is def a must win but in all honestly if we cant beat the lions at home then we dont deserve to be near the top anyway. Hopefully there are a few upsets along the way with regards to the bulls and stormers. Firstly it was the Tahs who were looking unbeatable and then they were brought down to earth, then it was the sharks and now its the crusaders and stormers, they hav to slip up sometime and we must capitalise

We lost tonight but could’ve won despite it all… Lots of rugby this season, we will bounce back I am sure. We are all gutted by the loss, but lets remain positive, it was a poor showing, I drove seven hours to get to the game, but remain confident we can do well this season. Deysel and Lambie will add impetus, we can look forward.

We miss a flyhalf that gets the line close to the advantage line ,we play to deep ,stormers figured that out and used rush defense and we got caught behind our advantage line ,meaning our forwards then had to travel backwards to get to the ruck

Our midfield ,and i dont care what anyone says ,NEEDs to change ,bosman and ST are sub standard ,slow and as the tournament gos on get worse and worse on defence . Forwards need a kick up their ass for tonights performance aswell poor poor poor

  • well our boys had a hard days work at the office – four countries in four weeks, and last weeks game againsts the Crusader had to to take it toll. On thing is for sure is boy! do we miss Lambie. Charl is completely lost with out him. Ludik didnt deserve to be subbed, and really what is everyone going on about John for when Bissie cant even get a line out right – best hooker in the world, surely lineouts should be basic functions for him. No one mentions Jannie not coping in the scrum either… we need John to start and he should start playing the 80 minutes. We need the consistancy. Cant’t understand taking off Willem Alberts – unless he was injured…
Gotta question Plum’s game plan to…we srubbornly stick to a plan not working instead of changing things to suit us – we saw the Stormers deploying the rush defense,, but we insist on running the ball in our 22…and standing off in the breakdowns. Never gonna get off the back foot that way. IMO.
JLP needs to have some game time in the Vodacom Cup i think, his last two stints at 10 have left our back line in disarray and is defintiely not living up to his billing.
Well…a bye next week I think….boys can rest, Lambie and Deysel will come back

  • What remains of major concern for me, and I mentioned this after the Crusaders game, is that our backline has all the menace of a room full of stuffed toys on attack. No creativity and no penetration. I know that much is being made of Lambie’s absence, but I still don’t think the blame can be laid solely at JLP’s feet. After all, backline moves are not made up on the spot by the flyhalf, they are devised by the coaches and perfected on the training field. On the evidence of the last two games, our planned backline moves consist of sending the ball down the line, hoping for a line break, and then playing off that. And given the average stepping ability of our current midfield, I’m afraid that a strategy like that can only end in tears…

  • I was not surprised by this result, if you consider the travel schedule these guys have had and the games they have had to play, what do you expect?? I personally thought that they played well, and it was the silly handling errors that cost them. Plum has got to come up with a better squad system or he will have nobody playing very good rugby. I have been harping on about Alberts needing a rest and hopefully now that Deysel is back, that will happen, but he is not the only one. The Sharks scrummed well and were good in the loose. If Charl McLeod had passed, it could have been another ball game, the break was brilliant, just needed to look around for support, maybe get Cheryl to work on his peripheral vision a bit. Bissy could so easily have held that bounce and scored but it was not to be. Quite shocked by JLP, he is normally spot on with his kicking, but he has not been good for the past two weeks, so releasing the pressure on the other sides. The one thing Plum has to now decide, is does he take a chance and rest some guys against the Lions, could be interesting, although their bubble burst badly on Saturday as well!!

  • Was a kak game to watch to be honest, and although we all want our teams to win all the time, I had little doubt the Stormers would come out on top for reasons mentioned above already which all played a part.

Then add the surprising misfiring at the line-out (but also remember how Bekker out-line-out(ed) Matfield in the Bulls game)
& the Stormers tight 5 on a high, and the Sharks mentally at a low following Twickers.

  • Agree, JLP needs to play in the Vodacom Cup for the next 2 weeks (no bye for him). We need to play MB @ 10 and Adi @ 12.Stormers are looking good to finish first – they beat both the Bulls and Sharks away from home, with the new format that is as good as winning all your overseas games. Our best bet is a wild card finish and we know how difficult that is going to be. Myself and a couple of other people were against the idea of not playing the Crusaders @ the original scheduled time, date and venue. The decision taken compromised our season and means we have to win all our remaining games!! We as Sharks (management, players, fans) suffer from “Stormer Syndrome”, management make decisions which are counter productive, players think they can just pitch and play without any stick, fans believe we have a team of supermans. It’s time we wake up and put the SHARKS 1st. That means good decisions by RS, players need to play for the jersey everytime (thank you Alberts) and fans need to support the team 100%. I don’t like the Bulls but I admire and respect their love for their jersey..they always play their hearts outs and only lose when they are outplayed..we on the other hand don’t give it stick every game. This has been going on for a while now and maybe Plum needs to start rotating players inorder to keep players on their toes.We have a couple of hungry guys..Bressler, Mostert, Eugene, Hoffman, Adi, Botes, Burden..they should be given a starting place.

  • @Whindy (Comment 112) :

It is for the same reason I said the Sharks will start losing the day they lose Lambie to injury…

I have not checked these myself but I would be interested if it did not confirm what I have been saying around Lambie/JLP.

Compare JLP’s last game to the one of Lambie before the Chiefs where he got injured (and Chiefs conditions for the game was shocking).

Just compare the ‘handling’ stats of both players…

This should give you an idea how involved each player is as first receiver and how they contribute to ‘manage’ the game.

This management of a game directly affects the players ‘form’ around you too.

That will include McCleod, Bosman and outside center.

It will also directly, and indirectly influence your team’s momentum (runners running off him and how effectively they cross the gain-line), not to mention defensive structures.

This is the great thing about great players or players with great influence – whilst they are there, the TEAM looks great, when they are gone the team looks kak.

Also guys (even players) always say they are not looking for excuses like travel… believe me, not only is this an excuse, it is a bloody good one.

Imagine the two teams in the last week for one second.

Stormers played on Saturday at 17:00, game ended at 19:00 after which they all headed off to their homes, wives, girlfriends, or friends at about 22:00.

Sunday they got together for a quick pool recovery session, afterwhich they probably headed off for a braai, or a nice Sunday with friends and family.

Monday the team hit the gym, did a couple of drills and assessed injuries and worked on strategies for the game ahead.

Tuesday forwards and backs split, did their individual gym sessions, shadow runs and drills.

Wednesday a bit of contact as a team and going through moves.

    Thursday off.

Friday captain’s run where they walked through everything and closed off the week before the big game.

Played at 17:00 SA time in London, game finished at 19:00 after which pleasantries needed to be taken care off, and rushed off to Heathrow.

Catch a flight in the cattle cart and arrive home on MOnday sometimes in JHB tired and stiff.

Connecting flight to Durban which would have seen all of them get home in Durban to their families late Monday night.

Coach would have had to give them Tuesday off to sleep and recover and if anything, got them together for a quick recover session in the pool to assess injuries etc.

Wednesday would have been the first day this team would have been on the field together. Selection, strategies and a couple of runs and drills would all have had to be included or cramped into this day.

Thursday team context training with a bit of contact and boom, Friday is upon you and captain’s run at hand…

See the difference in the preparation for each team?

Travel is not an excuse, it is a massive factor.

So don’t be too hard on your team…

  • @Morné (Comment 113) : Morne once again exellent post. Congrats to you team buddy.

I had said the same about our travel once we had accepted it. Said it was total madness and it would cost us dear. The game between Sharks and Stormers was far to close after our travel. Said at the time we could possibly lose the game to Stormers cause we would not have enough time to recover from the previous game. With all the travel between as well.

Now we are on a pressure cooker so to speak. Cause we have to beat the Lions this week with a bonus point. With that comes pressure having to win all the rest of our games. Well most of them and trying to pick up the bonus point. Not gonna be easy now. With pressure comes mistakes. Also Lions are no easy beats. That game will be tough.

Saders had a bye after the London game. They will be fine. Going the London route to play em has cost us very dear. Was for a good cause I know. It was mainly to help out the Saders union rather than the disaster fund.

Anyhow it is gone and dusted. We have to pick ourselves up. Hope we have Lambie back after our bye. He is a massive loss.
