Fourteen from three is the goal

Having lost ground on the South African conference log to both the Bulls and (more worryingly) the Stormers by virtue of three losses in three weeks, the Sharks have moved back into familiar territory in this year’s Super Rugby competition. While it’s probably still to early to talk about “last chance saloon” or any similar cliches, the fact is, they really cannot afford any more losses if hey aim to be in contention for the play-offs.

Firstly, let’s take our hats off to the Stormers. By winning their away conference games against both of their main rivals, they have set themselves up beautifully for a top-of-conference, or maybe even top-of-log, finish. With a seemingly benign tour coming up, pitting them against the Chiefs, Blues, Brumbies and Rebels, they have their home game against the Crusaders as their only remaining big challenge; that is, if you discount the fact that neither the Bulls nor the Sharks will lack any motivation for the return games in Cape Town. A week is a long time in Super Rugby, though and with at least ten of those to go before the play-offs, the only thing you can really be sure of is that there will be a few surprising results thrown in upset the best-laid plans of any team. The Stormers, though, have their fate purely in their own hands and if they keep on winning, they will have nothing to fear from any South African rival.

The Sharks, though, need to put the Stormers out of their minds for the time being. They will have another crack at them soon enough, but the immediate priority needs to be stemming the alarming slide towards the foot of the log that began three weeks ago with an uninspired performance against the Chiefs. Sharks teams of years gone by have shown the unfortunate tendency to embark on losing streaks at the most inopportune of times and while we had fervently hoped that the Class of 2011 might be different in this respect, the “played three, won zero” statistic of the last three weeks would suggest that this is not the case. What’s in the past is in the past, though and it’s important for everyone, both within the team and the wider Sharks community, to put the last few results out of their minds and look ahead to the next three weeks.

Simply put, their are fourteen points on offer before the Sharks face the Stormers again and in order for that return match to be of anything other than academic value, the Sharks simply have to take all fourteen of those points. Four of them will, of course, accrue without any effort at all by virtue of next week’s bye, but it’s this weekend’s home game against the Lions, along with the Easter weekend clash against the Hurricanes that simply have to yield the maximum ten points for the Sharks.

Problem is, from a Sharks perspective, turning the team around from the sort of performance we saw against the Stormers isn’t that easy and while the Lions and Hurricanes are both looking pretty week based on their log position, we know that the Sharks are going to have to play considerably better in order to simply beat both teams, much less score four tries in each encounter. Exacerbating the problem, particularly this week, is a team clearly full of tired, sore bodies for whom the bye appears to be coming at least a week too late. While the intensity among the forwards was again pleasing against the Stormers, the level of accuracy was well below what was required and coach John Plumtree will need to have a serious look at making one or two rotational changes to ensure that he gets what he wants this weekend.

Amongst the backs, the problem is far more serious, with the fluid attacking unit on show during the early stages of the season now seeming bereft of ideas without the baby-faced general Pat Lambie there to pull the strings. The wünderkind should be fit to take his place against the Hurricanes, but Plumtree has a big call to make ahead of the Lions game when it comes to the flyhalf position. Jacques-Louis Potgieter has endured two difficult games and with his usually sure-fire goal-kicking boot letting him down, he is struggling to assert himself on the play. The Sharks have started to align themselves much more deeply with Potgieter at flyhalf as well and have made themselves vulnerable to the rush defence in the process, often seeing moves stopped well short of the advantage line, despite good close-quarter work by the pack. All-in-all, it’s simply looking just a little broken out there and with an outside back division not looking able to capitalise when line breaks do occur, something drastic clearly needs to be done.

These are tough times indeed in Sharks land, but if this team truly does have championship credentials, there is no better time to show it then over the next few weeks. I’m sure they can turn things around and they know that their fans will, of course, be there to support them every step of the way.

  • They need a hard uncompromising performance against the Lions. A convincing victory before the bye is just the thing to get the show on the road again.

  • spot on Rob, I still believe that the Sharks will end second, Lambie’s injury may be a blessing in disguise, he will be fresh when he comes back and Deysel is on his way back and will add a lot to an already awesome pack.I like war1 idea of giving Bissie a rest and playing John at hooker, may solve the lineout woes. It is still the backline that worries me, they just lack something and I am afraid to say, it is at center neither of the Sharks centers are setting the place alive and without Lambie, your backline is looking very ordinary.

  • @Whindy (Comment 4) : Agreed. Stefan is clearly off the pace. I am cautious about saying anything about Meyer Bosman. He has made a couple of linebreaks, although he was caught behind the gain line on occasion. Lambie might be able to solve that problem.

We need those 5 points against the Lions – but we can’t afford to miss “2-on-1” opportunities. Who does that?

  • I am going to get shot for this. Unlike everybody here i dont think Bizzy is that great a hooker. His basic function is not to run around the field but to put the ball in in linouts and to scrum The dazzling stuff is the bonus
I was prepared to give JLP a chance as I do not rate him and never have he has had his chance We need a good kicker for Friday
I also think JLP is the reason we crab when we run He cant seem to run straight he takes of from where he is and runs to the corner Reminds me of another wonder boy You guys remember Luke Smith?
    Shows how good Lambie is
having said all of that If we play that stupid and come within 10 points of the log leaders the rest of the teams must be messing themselves

  • Obviously very dissapointed – so let me get this out of the way:

Congratulations on the Stormers for taking the win!

Having said that – I think it was an aweful display of rugby – from both sides. It’s hard to believe that two teams who played great rugby a week ago – dished this up. The Sharks were standing so deep when they had a run it took forever to get over the line – that was if someone did not knock…. πŸ™„

Stormers were also better on defense. But again – and this in no ways meaning to shrug off the Stormers win – the Sharks did not play at all, and the Stormers not much better – otherwise I reckon the scoreboard would have looked a lot different…..more like a 30 point difference instead of 10. Sharsk let themselves down and the Stormers were only the slightly better of the bad on the day.

Sharks – kry julle gatte in rat – you are better than Saturdays game – WAY better in fact.

We seriously need to make a move on FH….JLP is not cutting it when he needs to – sorry.

  • Well I as one that was totally against us going the London route to play Saders. Said at the time it would probably cost us the game against Saders and Stormers.

Read in the Tribune yesterday that 5 of our players came home last week from London with flu (travel-induced) That what was said in the paper. Not sure which players. This insane travel has cost us for sure. BUT we could have won that game on Saturday. Watched it again and we just made so many handling errors that cost us huge. Also our lineouts was just rubbish can’t say much else about it. Kicking at posts dreadful once again. Now we have to pick up 5 points from the Lions and again that will put pressure on the team. Just can’t see us doing it. The way we played on Saturday we could even lose to Lions.

Stormers now are the only team to have a realistic chance from our conference to win this thing. They are way better than just about all the teams they play overseas. Said this a few weeks back. Stormers should beat Brumbies/Rebels/Chiefs and also could beat Blues. Our only hope it to end 2nd in our conference. Not sure if we can. But Bulls have a tougher overseas tour than Stormers. They play Saders this week and the following the Reds.

JLP is just not doing it at fh. I would play Bosman there this week. Bring Adi in at inside centre. Start John at hooker this week as well. We just might get some ball in our lineouts. Bissie could be tired who knows. Not sure what is happening there. Was it the calls or just bad throwing on Saturday that cost us in the lineouts? Could be a bit of both.

  • Personally, I would like to see a tight five comprised of Beast, John, Jannie, Mossie and Sykes being played against the Lions. That way, the pack should have enough grunt to allow us to play Botes at 6 (to offset Bissie not being on the field), Willem at 7 (no brainer selection), and Keegan Daniel, our most creative ball player at 8, where he can be more influential in terms of creating attacking opportunities.

Imagine having to defend against constant ball carries by heavies like Beast, Mossie, Sykes and Big Vic, and then having to contend with Bissie, Kanko and Eugene van Staden when fatigue sets in and the game opens up…

The other significant advantage of this line-up is that we then have the luxury of not having to worry too much about what to do with Stef. Adi *has* to come into the starting line-up to give us some thrust, and I’m not convinced that replacing Ludick with Stef to accommodate Adi is the best solution. I’m still undecided if Adi should slot in at 12 or 13 though.

Lastly, again much is being made about JLP standing too deep, and us playing behind the advantage line, and having a flyhalf who takes the ball flatter (a la Lambie) will do much to improve the situation, but I’m still not seeing any evidence of structured and coached attacking plays in the backline. Simply sending the ball down the line in the hope of a line break is just not going to cut it!

  • @robdylan (Comment 43) : Yip that was great, but the finishing was disgustingly repulsive.

I think the guys was to excited when they made those breaks. Didn’t give themselves enough time to make a good decision. You’re allowed to slow down and link up with your support when you make a break. Don’t just sprint to the next defender. In fact more than anything else, rather just take the tackle and make sure you retain possession, even turn around to see if you have any good options, but don’t just go and throw it away.

Great breaks though. Really pleased with that.

  • I’m seriously gutted and disappointed in the Sharks performance but I agree with Ice that the Stormers weren’t that much better. I suppose our defense was a lot better. We are missing Lambie big time. JLP I thought was a really good kicker but he has been disappointing. We still don’t have real play makers in the backline except for Lambie. We need to really get the 14 points from the next 3 weeks to get our confidence up. I’m really worried about the Lions game because if we play like we did this weekend we might be in real trouble. The lineouts REALLY needs to get sorted. There is just NO excuse for missing that many lineouts

Sharks forever though and I’ll be right behind the team no matter what.

  • @Ice (Comment 44) : Have to agree, both teams never played well. Rugby was not the winner on Saturday was a terrible game to watch after a very exciting game we watched against the Saders. Buton Saturday the better team won. Stormers defence was very good. Their fh was way better than ours so were their lineouts. We looked clueless at times. Handling errors really get on my nerves. The most basic thing we just can’t get right. Also another simply basic like passing. We could probably have had two tries on Saturday. Probably the worst game of SuperRugby this season I have watched. Except us against the Chiefs. Two very forgettable games.

  • @Letgo (Comment 50) : Letgo I think you underestimate the speed that the game is played at, and that is why our players are so good come test time, because they are used to the pace, they have to make split second decisions and Mc Cloud is still a bit off the pace in decision making. Which is the difference between him being a good player and a great.player. Fourie du Preez ,Lambie and the likes always have so much more time at their disposal.

I know this is a long tourney to go, but really don’t see any of the saffa teams getting close to Stormers. Unless Bulls beat Saders they will be on a high and could be very hard to beat even at Newlands. Bulls will get better. Their game too was not a great spectacle, but they won and won in NZ. Any team would take that. So well done to Bulls as well.

  • To be honest I don’t think is the right mindset, rather focus on improving performance. And if the performance is good then try and better it and so on and so forth. That is how champion sides are made. Champion teams in Super rugby over many years of improvement and maybe we are asking too much of the guys to go out and win it this year, especially from this situation.

  • My first post since the weekend.

Firstly, congrats to the Stormers and all their supporter, Its been a along time coming, savour it. To be honest you guys should have won by a lot more and that should be a worry. The Sharks were there to be put away and this was not done. The question is why, was it because of the Sharks doggedness or was it because of the Stormers own shortcomings on attack.

  • Repost – accidentally said this where it is really irrelevant…

    Soooo…

SA accumulated 87 points in 33 outings.
Aus accumulated 88 points in 31 outings.
NZ accumulated 96 points in 32 outings.

I know the sharks aren’t on top of their game, the Lions and Cheetahs are again making it very difficult for other SA teams to compete.

Before 2010 S14 the stats actually said that the Cheetahs and Lions conceded on average 0.6 log points more to Aus teams than to SA teams and 1.1 log points more to NZ teams than SA teams.

  • @Whindy (Comment 63) : That is also true but I think the impovement principle is more important. Think of going into a game thinking ‘We have to win, even if we play badly’ as opposed to ‘We have to keep impoving and being the best we can be’ A positive mindset is by far more more effective. If you aim to win and miss your aim, you lose. If you aim to improve and miss your aim you may well have played well and won anyway.

  • @King Shark (Comment 64) : What you really need is your top 3 teams to accumulating the bulk of the points while beating the bottom 2 in your conference. It will be so important for the SA conference that the cheetahs and lions keep loosing against the Sharks, Bulls and I hate to say it but Stormers.

So, Come on Lions! give us the 5 points for SA sake πŸ˜‰

  • @Viking (Comment 66) : Top 3 only:

    SA 70 from 19
    Aus 63 from 19
    NZ 72 from 19

Aus are struggling here as they only have two competitive teams at the moment, although I predict the Rebels will get even better.

NZ dominates as their top 4 teams are very real threats to any opposition.

SA only has three really competitive teams. I reckon if we redistributed the 3 or 4 good players from the cheetahs and lions and closed them down, we would always end numbers 1,2 and 3 on the log.

  • Would it be impossible to try Odwa at 13? Other wings have moved closer to the action with success in the past. . .

Stefan, JPP, Odwa, Adi, Bosman, Mvovo, McLeod. I think it could work.

We need to try something that`s for sure.

  • As pointed out in the article and by others, the big issue with the backs (other than the plethora of handling errors) was standing too deep and taking the contact BEHIND the advantage line. we were effectively going backwards.

Amazing how critical a youngster like Pat Lambie has become to our whole game.

Maybe a switch in the centre with Adi starting and possibly even Odwa moving to 15 with JPP and Mvovo on wings.

  • @Whindy (Comment 54) : I don’t don’t that every decision needs to be made, basically right away in this competition, but the better players are also better at giving themselves more time. McLeod didn’t have a defender behind him for at least 5m. Odwa was the first man behind him. He could have given himself 1 extra second by just taking the pace of for those last 3 meters before getting to the next defender, then he may have realized that he has support and could have drawn that defender and made the pass to Odwa.

But your right, better players would have finished that move, McLeod and a few others were lacking in the split second decision making moments.

I’m still saying your best bet in that situation, when you can’t think of the best next move, is to take the tackle and stay on your feet as long as possible, keep you arms free and look for support.

    22. Ludik

Now this is a bench that can bring magic to a team during the second half to close out the game. Whish I could include Deysel as well but he will be back before we know it.

  • @Viking (Comment 130) : Stef and Ludik are similar…so rather drop one of the two…sorry Ludik, we need a captain when Smit goes off. Go 5-2 split with Deysel on the bench. We don’t need 3 backs on the bench. Or they should rest Keegan and Put Deysel at 19. Keegan looked quite drained on saturday to me.

  • @JJR (Comment 132) : It really depends on his match fitness. He needs to build that strength in the vodacom cup where it is not as bruising as super rugby. The way I see it he has another 2 games in the Vodacom cup. He needs to play one more and we have a bye next weekend so he can just as well play another. Then he should be good to go.

  • @JJR (Comment 133) : The I would rather start Stef at 15 and drop one of the wings back to the bench. Either Odwa or JPP. Either way, the other one would play the majority of the second half.

Stef can do 80 minutes at 15 and there are few players better at that position.

  • The backline would do a whole lot better if the forwards secured the ball better and prevented so much turnover. The repeated theme against the Stormers was TURNOVER after TURNOVER. Halfway through the second half I decided to update my facebook status everytime their was a turnover of any sort and I soon gave up because by the time I was finished updating my status on the first turnover, 3 more had happened!

I thought JL Potgieter would be a good, solid replacement for Lambie. I always knew he never had the X factor but he is an able replacement, or so I thought.

@robdylan (Comment 32) : I just wish he learnt how to kick like Morne Steyn too! We would of been in the game against the Crusaders and against the Stormers if JL Potgieter could kick at goal better! Crucial misses have kept us trailing and will cost us dearly in the future…

  • @Viking (Comment 138) : Yeah. Stef at 15, Adi at 13.

A 5-2 bench is easily maintainable as Hoffman can play multiple backline positions and Kanko and Daniel are both good enough to fill in if there happened to be to many injuries.

  • Here’s my Sharks team to face the Lions. I’ve given some fringe players a chance and rested some of our senior players. I’ve also tried some no combo’s.

    1. Beast Mtawarira
    2. John Smit
    3. Eugene Van Staden
    4. Anton Bresler
    5. Gerhard Mostert
    6. Jacques Botes
    7. Willem Alberts
    8. Ryan Kankowski
    9. Conrad Hoffman
    10. JL Potgieter
    11. Lwazi Mvovo
    12. Meyer Bosman
    13. Adi Jacobs
    14. Odwa Ndungane
    15. Stefan Terblanche

Bench: 16. Bismark Du Plessis 17. Jannie Du Plessis 18. Alistair Hargreaves 19. Keegan Daniel/Jean Deysel (if fit)20. Charl McCleod 21. JP Pietersen 22. Louis Ludik

I’ve played around with the backline. I think JL Potgieter deserves one last chance at flyhalf against weaker opposition. The forwards weren’t the best against the Stormers on the weekend and therefore the backs are likely to suffer. Terblanche looked @ home when played at fullback and JP Pietersen thinks he’s a center and so I’ve dropped him!

McCleod has been missing at a couple of rucks and needs to speed up and get there! He also knocks the ball on a ocuple too many times and was very selfish in the break he made on Saturday.

Kicking duties will go to JL Potgieter in the first half and to Meyer Bosman in the second half.

  • My team for the weekend:

    1: Beast
    2: Smit
    3: Du Plessis
Beast selects himself. John is a better scrummager that Bismarck. Also, with Bismarck’s throwing, the lineouts have been a truly fair contest of late – neither our own players, nor that of the opposing team had any idea where the ball would go… I was quite tempted to include Eugene van Staden at 3, but resisted the temptaion for continuity’s sake. He’s due a start soon though.

    4: Mostert
    5: Sykes
Mostert adds some grunt in the engine room for the set pieces, and provides extra ball carrying options.

    6: Botes
    7: Alberts
    8: Daniel
Botes to scrap for the ball on the deck. Alberts needs no explanation. Daniel because I feel that 8 is his most influential position, and we are in need of some vision and creativity. I know there has been some concerns voiced on this site about playing him in tandem with Botes, but with abovementioned tight 5 I believe we have the bulk to carry it off.

    9: McCloud
    10: Potgieter
I’m not particularly enamoured with either, but again, for the sake of continuity, and particularly in lieu of the change at 8, I’ve decided to retain their services.

    12: Bosman
    13: Jacobs
Bosman has actually been breaching the defensive line, but has been receiving the ball so far behind the advantage line that it has been of little use. He also has not had anyone to capitalise on the half-chances he has created, which is where Adi comes in.

    11: Pietersen
    14: Ndungane
Mvovo still needs to learn to look for work. Given that we’re on a quest for 4 tries, we need people who are willing to work to make it happen. Similarly, when looking for tries, you sometimes expose yourself to counter-attacks, and I believe the above wings provide our best cover defense options

    15: Ludick
Preferred above Terblanche due to aforementioned 4 try quest. Runs the ball back hard and commits defenders.

Before moving onto substitues, a thought regarding the 10-12-13 axis – if JLP again fails to produce the goods, what about moving Bosman to 10, Jacobs to 12, and JLP to 13? While I have not been sold on JLP’s abilities as playmaker, he has shown that he has an eye for a gap, a reasonable step, and while not being an out-and-out speed merchant, is probably no slower than Terblanche.

    16: Bismarck
    17: Van Staden
    18: Hargreaves
    19: Kankowski
    20: Hoffman
    21: Terblanche
    22: Mvovo

Most of the players above could be quite devastating in an impact capacity, when the opposing players are starting to tire and the game opens up. Additionally, Terblanche offers cover for 13 (should the JLP experiment go awry) as well as 15, and having him playing off the bench you don’t risk both your captaincy candidates at the same time.

  • @Culling Song (Comment 142) : a good team, but the 4 tries will take care of themselves if we create a solid platform to work off of. It’s not like we’re playing the Stormers or the Crusaders and trying to look for a bonus point after all.
I would of experimented a bit more, but a very good team none-the-less and Keegan Daniel was a revelation at 8th man in the Currie Cup last season and it would be interesting to see what he can do over there in Super Rugby.

Stef is really solid at 15; but he is not the best attacking 15; Odwa is even better when attacking from 15…he hits the ball at more pace than on the wing and he has a good handoff which he can use better when running at speed. Stef always seems to run straight into a couple of forwards instead of attacking some space.

  • @rhineshark (Comment 169) : @Ben (Comment 171) : JLP is taking the ball too deep and that is neither Bosman’s nor Terblanche’s fault. JLP’s centres also have no role in him missing crucial goalkicks. A flyhalf can give his centres more time and space which would make it easier for them but I don’t believe centres can make a flyhalf look bad.

  • Forwards need to work hard at set piece as well.
Sharks need to revise the basics . So much has been said about JLP not taking the ball flat ,which i agree with ,however the truth of the matter is the hargreeves and Bismarc need a slap on the wrist for their roles at the line outs .

To be very honest now , I think plum needs to look at the team and tweak it a litle. 15 has been ordinary in my opinion as have our two centers , we could also change up the forwards a litle -we are playing with some light weight boys in daniels hargreeves and kanko, all three of them are specialists and brutaly effective on their day ,but only on their day ,if you know what i mean- the forwards must also be tired and we heard so much about rotation ,yet it hasnt happened ? ! We need momentum at the end of the comp towards play offs and for that our guys need to be keen and energetic -and fit

  • Well. I have been cogitating for the last 48 hours about what to say about this and how to say it. Like my “touchline twin” Ice I was left absolutely bereft at the poor play displayed by our boys in the Black and White on Saturday and the seemingly meandering game plan.
But I am not going to churn over the now cooling coals and try to find answers to why we played so badly. It’s not what I do, or who I am. I am going to support what everyone is saying here and add my thruppence worth in saying that this competition is far from over but that the pressure is now fully on the Sharks to outperform allcomers and put maximum points on the board with every outing from now till cut-off time.
We can’t fix SuperPat’s paw ahead of time, even though we want to. But, speaking totally from the heart now, and possibly slightly at odds with my own “mantra” I am worried that we cannot afford another week of JLP at FH.
That’s a hard thing for me to say because it was me who supported his first foray at Twickenham and urged all and sundry to join me unquestioningly, but I feel we need a solid kicking performance this weekend, even if it means rolling Pat out to kick every time we get a chance at poles! (Hey – his hand is hurt, not his feet!)
Realistically, though, it’s not just the poles where the absence of our darling General Lambie is being the most felt – the flash of curls and clear instructions to all and sundry are being missed at every breakdown, and the lack of crucial tackling of key opposition players is only too apparent.
My point of view, for what it’s worth (very little really, but I am still going to share it) is that if we are to hold things together until we get our X-factor back (and whether he likes it or not, Pat is our X-factor) we need to take it back to basics and keep it simple. Our discipline needs to be exemplary, our handling spot on and our communication lines open on every channel. And we need to keep possession of the ball when we have it!
Without devolving into the archetypal armchair critic telling Plum and all and sundry how to run his team, I think it fair to say that the most important thing the Sharks need to do now is believe that they can overcome the last three weeks.
Even tired, battered and bruised bodies can perform miracles when self-belief comes into play. And that, in my everso humble opinion, is what we need in spade loads right now – confidence, positive vibes, self-belief and a general psychological regeneration.
No one on that pitch last Saturday looked as if they believed in themselves, let alone one another. And that’s what brought us down.
As fans we can help by being upbeat and sending out positive energy, no matter how disgusted we were at what we saw on Saturday.
So. GO SHARKS. WE LOVE YOU. Out on the ether to the boys in Durbs… Lotsa luv from Shaz xxx

  • I think just get some wins on the board. Enough pressure already without talking about getting 2 bonus point wins. Any win is great at this stage.
