Reasons to be cheerful… Parts 1 to infinity

Forgive me Ian Drury (and your Blockheads) for stealing your hit lyrics, but in spite of my gorgeous guys in the good old monochrome outfits somewhat underperforming for the last three weeks, I still firmly believe that there is much to be thankful for! So allow me to share with you a few “out there” points of view, which may seem more Cape Town than Pretoria (like hectic, bru) on why I think we are blessed to be here, at this moment in time, and Sharks supporters to boot …

First off, every morning I get up and look at the view from my balcony here in the Boerestad with its rolling koppies, yodelling hadedas, crying hornbills and sleepy bushbabies, and I thank the Lord and my lucky stars that I am in South Africa and not in the land of my birth, that “mud island” in the middle of the North Sea with all its grey skies and faded gloriana. It’s the main reason I am such a “one-eyed, head in the sand” optimist… My No 1 reason to be cheerful… Africa is freaking awesome and I feel more alive being here than anywhere else on Earth.

Which is much the way I feel when I watch the Sharks take to the field every week. That swelling of pride deep within my breast, my heart skipping a beat, a lump coming to my throat and a flush of excitement and admiration rushing to my cheeks. I don’t know why, in the same way that I am completely clueless to what it is that has made such a staunch Seffrican of a “soutie” (albeit without the prerequisite tackle!) from Cambridge, but I do know that I just LOVE the feeling of being a Sharks supporter. As much as I love being South African and living in God’s country.

When I made the move to the land I love so passionately from that dreary blob of a country opposite France, I went to my first live rugby match at Loftus – Northern Transvaal vs Natal. And I chose to support Natal, mostly because they were MUCH better looking than the very much ante partum Blue Bulls. That was a major reason to be cheerful to a lusty young lass fresh off the plane from Blighty. And remains a rather good reason to be cheerful even now, because there are some rather hunky individuals taking to the hallowed green velvet of Mr Price Kings Park these days! I may be a wee bit older, and exponentially wiser, but I still appreciate a pretty face and a finely honed physique, and the Sharks have always been good at keeping the eye candy coming in that respect. We have beauty, AND the Beast! πŸ˜† And if that isn’t a reason to keep a gal cheerful, then I don’t know what is!

Looks (apparently) aren’t everything in rugby, and skills tend to out-trump them when the chips are down. But hey, being a Sharks supporter guarantees you of some serious talent in the ability department. Through the years the Sharks have produced some of the finest proponents of the modern game. Kings Park has given birth to some true legends and continues to do so with regular alacrity. In my (short time) as a Seffrican I have been privileged to witness the awe-inspiring talents of Reece Edwards, Honiball, Teichmann, Montgomery, Smit et al. Now that privilege extends to our “man of the moment” Patrick Lambie. How blessed am I to be on the sidelines watching him rise to his rightful place in the rugby firmament? And what a MAJOR reason to be cheerful that is!

And then, of course, there’s the Sharks “family” – the cameraderie and bonhommie which makes us all brothers and sisters under the Black and White – you, me and everyone else who sheds blood, sweat and tears for our team on a daily basis, taking the rough with the smooth, defeats with the victories, the criticism and crowing from opposing fans… We’re like Spartans, as Heaven’s Game recently pointed out in a sharply worded comment, and when the going gets tough we revert to the Phalanx, protecting one another and, most importantly, our team, from the slings and arrows that outrageous fortune regularly rains down upon them. There may be grumbles from within the ranks, but never rebellion or dishonour. So being a Sharks supporter, of itself, is a bloody great reason to be cheerful, I’d say…! 😎

But for me, perhaps the greatest reason to be cheerful right now, when defeat has taken a bitter toll on all of us – team and supporters alike – for three straight weeks, is this: we have one of the finest and most talented teams of rugby players, coaches, managers and supporters in the world. And like our Fearless Leader has pointed out today in his most excellent post, together we can perform miracles and lift one another to untold heights and glory. All for one. And one for all. That’s why I love the Sharks. And Sharks supporters. We endure in the face of often extreme odds and prevail, come what may. We know how to count to infinity, because we’ve done it a thousand times before! Now it’s time to go to infinity and (forgive me Buzz Lightyear) beyond… ARE YOU WITH ME? πŸ˜›

    9. Pienaar
15.Steyn—A major gripe i have with the sharks is they dont fight enough for their players

  • @Talent (Comment 22) : Now there would be a awesome backline. The oldest in that backline would be Pienaar. Think he is only 26. Far to young and too good to have let go. How we let our players go like that is just foolish.

My ideal would be all the Shark boys doing well for Ulster but the Saints winning πŸ™‚ But if Ulster win , they get my full support going forward 😎 I shall be at the match along with my Dad and eldest son Jayden 😈

  • @VanWilder (Comment 33) : Close, your top 10 is correct, but taking into account points difference, 11 to 15 looks like this:
    11 Lions -35 9
    12 Brumbies -54 9
    13 Cheetahs -48 8
    14 Force -52 8
    15 Hurricanes -55 8

  • @Talent (Comment 22) : Hellsteeth, now that’s a decent backline.

I might still prefer McLeod of clan McLeod at 9 though…. That’s if he can keep his head a little bit better and cut down on his errors at crucial times.

You are right about selecting Murray. I reckon the Sharks might have made a mistake in letting him go.

Odwa would be unlucky not to make that side – he is probably the most improved back in the Sharks, if not in all of the SA franchises…

A pity about Barrit – It looks like he will be in the England squad for the WC.
