Van der Walt the latest casualty

The Cheetahs have lost their token redhead as their nightmare injury run continues. Flanker Philip van der Walt has become the sixth player to be sent home from their Antipodean tour after sustaining every rugby player’s nightmare – a cruciate knee ligament rupture – against the Blues last weekend.

Adding van der Walt’s name to the five players who had already been ruled out before the tour started three weeks ago, the Cheetahs have now lost 11 frontline players to injury this season, including virtually every natural captain they have. It started with hooker Adriaan Strauss breaking his hand against the Sharks within the opening minutes and continued as both Juan Smith and Andries Strauss subsequently picked up injuries.

More worrying is the depletion of their loose forward stocks, with Heinrich Brussow and Frans Viljoen joining Smith and van der Walt on the casualty list. Impressive Griquas number 8 Leon Karremaker is on his way over to New Zealand and will be on the bench for this weekend’s game.

Other players to be unavailable due to injury are Hennie Daniller, Philip Snyman, Jonig Nokwe and Rayno Benjamin.

  • This could give Justin Downey a chance to get a run in Super Rugby, or doesn’t it work exactly like that? I mean would the Cheetahs be able to use him. I don’t know exactly how this partnership between the Griquas and the Cheetahs works.

  • @King Shark,:-). When Shaun Pollock played his last game at Kingsmead, there was a poster in the crowd saying: “Shaun Pollock, giving ginger kids street cred since 1996”. I thought that was also a good one!
