When countrymen become foes

Let me just get this one out there: I don’t like the new Super Rugby format. This conference thing is turning people who SHOULD be m friends into enemies and vice versa.

I’m not saying that I’m xenophobic, or anything – hell, I’ve met one or two Aussies and Kiwis that I’ve actually quite liked, after all. In fact, I have family living in both countries, not to mention countless friends. That’s not really the point, though. The point is that, I believe, it’s not natural, as a red-blooded Saffa male, for me to want to support any of their teams when playing against my own volk. This new system forces me to do that as a matter of course.

Let’s look at the Stormers. We have a LOT of mountain folk sharing our little Shark-infested home here and we treasure the wee men, really we do. Sure, they are a bit more into fashion and makeup than we feel normal blokes should be, but that’s a trifling matter between such good friends. In years gone by, we’d probably be fighting tooth and nail to ensure we finish higher on the overall log than them, but would probably be pretty happy with ending up in second place on the log, provided another Saffa side were first. The Crusaders, the Waratahs – it’s those buggers who are the real enemy and we need to ensure that, as South Africans, we beat those guys at every possible turn. The overall log is all that matters and while we want the Sharks to be on top, we don’t mind another Saffa side being up there because it lessens the chances of an Aussie or Kiwi team hosting a knock-out game.

All of that has now changed. If you don’t win your conference, you’re nothing. You can even be second on the overall log, but will still need to travel if the team ahead of you comes from your conference. Now you know I’ve never been a being prone to higher-level thought processes, meaning that this new system leaves me with only one overriding impression. I want the Stormers to lose to everyone they play against. And I want the Bulls to also lose to everyone they play against. I want the Cheetahs and the Lions… oh wait. Tick that box anyway. I’m sure you see my point, though.

This is, quite simply put, completely bonkers. I’m going to end up shouting my lungs out for not only the Crusaders this weekend, but also for the flipping Reds, in the vain hope that the latter can pull off a shock win at Newlands. How unpatriotic is that, I ask you? Perhaps more a case of knowing where my loyalties lie.

I blame SANZAR and I blame the Aussies – even more so, I blame SARU for not sticking up for what makes sense for us. And to my Stormers mates, I beg you not to judge me too harshly, because we all know you’ll be donning yellow along with every other non-Sharks supporter in the land when the Hurricanes make their way to Durban in two weeks’ time…

And the Stormers to beat the Reds of course.

  • I never quite bought into this whole ‘support any SA team unless they play against my team’ BS anyway. Adds some spice and nothing wrong with that.

  • Very true Rob….I was thinking the same thing. The Stormers and Bulls need to start losing and the Lions and Cheetah’s need to start winning (except against the Sharks of course)

Patriotism towards SA has died together with the new format. I will off course cheer on any SA team in the finals if the Sharks are no longer in the game.

  • This is so true, that horrible idiot that runs Aussie Rugby, chief executive John O’Neill, is the arsehole who has stuffed up our competition so he could have a local league because the one they tried to start failed so dismally. I also have to say Saru were responsible for insisting on the top team from each conference go through. so we are to blame for that. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. I also need to take Rob to task about calling HMMMM the only Lions fan left in the world, there are 3 of us that I am aware of Greg, hmmm and myself. and unfortunately WE will be rooting for our team against yours!! That said I will take all the abuse you can offer, I am sure Ice will growl at me all week. Hopefully we will still be friends after the Match. Still the best site going regardless of what Megatron and the likes say!!

I know we love seeing the aus + NZ team but if NZ said we sticking with aus then they must go fly and do it. The Japan teams would have joined them, nice (WOW), the standards would have dropped dramatically and we would give them carrots all the time πŸ™‚

  • Fantastic article! I couldn’t agree more. The Aussies rule SANZAR by their arrogant and pushy attitudes, and SA and NZ get bought out by pretty bonuses. All because the Aussies don’t have their own domestic competition.

We have to drop this format, and revert to something slicker. Maybe with the Northern Hemisphere INCLUDING the Kings. THAT would make SARU interested! Hell, if we did that, the Lions and Cheetahs might win some games! πŸ˜‰ Thanks again for a great article. I hope it starts an underground movement of begruntled NZ and SA rugby fans with this pathetic system!

  • Hey All. Good news about the sharks. Woke up this morning and realised we are gonna win it this season. Everyone is underestimating the emotional toll all the touring and Twickenham had on us. We’ve got the Lions up next, and the Canes and a bye. By then we would have forgotten about this little slump. Lambie will be back, and Deysel, and we’ll klap the over rated Stormers at Newlands. Then they face the Crusaders. Wide open still, and the tour is done. Please relax now everyone. The General has spoken, and remember I’m watching you!

That’s why I support the Cheetahs and Lions every year, cause I know every win they could manage will take away four points from another team that may actually be competitive on the log.

I also often support the Force, did with the Reds for a while, basically I support the bottom half of the log against the top half.

  • I dont think the conferences are a bad things @ all.

Lets look @ past history, we always complain bitterly about the travelling the SA teams have had to do.

The conferences now take that out of the equation where all teams have to travel pretty much the same.

Also, we love the derbies, The big ones. We love nothing more than a bone crunching game v a local side. And watch the Kiwi derbies, they more brutal @ times than ours.

My only down side to this S15 is that we dont play every team in the league.

  • Also, from reading the posts above, people need to put the Boks before the Sharks. Im a huge fan of both, BUT, provioncialism is a thing of the past and must be treated as such.

I would rather see the Boks retain the RWC than the Sharks win the S15.

Might sound harsh, but its true. Boks must always come first.

  • Blame it on the Aussies.

Actually I just can’t support a overseas team against a saffa team. NOT yet anyhow. Come next year or the following if this daft format has not changed, think every supporter of every team in their conference will be supporting the teams from the other conference. Sad but it will happen. For now I just can’t get myself to support a another conference team against a saffa side. Would rather see a saffa side win it even if it is not Sharks.

So Go Sharks. Go Stormers and Go Bulls. Not sure if Cheetahs are playing this week.

From next year all this or the following year all this support of our own saffa sides will probably change us all. Sad actually how we sold our cc and ourselves down the rivier, so Oz could get a domestic tourney.

  • Not a problem for me at all as far as the bulls are concerned, you all know I slate them every chance I get.

The Stormers are a different kettle of snoek though, makes you feel a bit guilty to enjoy living in Majestic Cape Town and secretly hope their team stumble all the time. 😈

But think I might do it next year. They say it only lasts 15 years the replacement knees. Not sure. Thought the replacement knees were titanium.

I drive around now too….hehe. Ag, I loved my marthon running. The price you pay later. Now wish I could be playing more golf. I still do go play once in awhile but then pay for it later..lol.

You say your old man will play in 4 weeks after the op? Wow! that is fast. Thought knees took long to heal.

I also used to do plenty snow skiing. That puts plenty pressure on the knees as well. But comrades is a killer for knees. Not just the race but the huge, huge amounts of training you have to put in. I ran for more than 20 years. So that kinda running will damage the knees. I also used to paddle ski. We just need to regroup, take a looooonnnngggg breath, wait for SuperPat, rev up for Deysel, get those two byes in hand (they’re a few weeks apart!) and slaughter all who dare to attempt to usurp us from our rightful place on the podium.
Let’s all remember the team that took the Currie Cup final, and how they did it, and gain strength from the fact that THAT team is OUR team, and they can achieve any darned thing they put their minds to, with us cheering them on all the way.

  • It’s simple really. As long as a player is clad in green and gold, he’ll have my full and unwavering support, regardless of provincial allegiance. However, the instant the jersey is removed, if it is not replaced with a black and white one, the player ceases to be worthy of further consideration, as insignificant as the ants on the ground (unless you’re an entomologist, in which case I’ll have to find you a different example).

Of course, at various points in the past I’ve enjoyed watching the Blues, Brumbies, Crusaders, etc., but that is all about an appreciation for the game and the skill and style they brought to bear on it, and had nothing to do with support.

The one exception to the rule is the Bulls. Due to the fact that I lived in Pretoria for about 5 years, I often find myself uttering an involuntary prayer in support of whichever team opposes the Bulls. But it’s just a small prayer. Coupled with maybe a few burnt offerings. And a visit to the sangoma. And large cash donations to various centres of worship. Crossing the crone who lives on the corner’s (and who may or may not be a witch, but the caged childern in her kitchen suggests the former) palm with silver, and asking her to put the evil eye on… sorry, I digress, what were we talking about?

  • @Ben (Comment 148) : You’ve kind of hit the nail right on the head there, but for me it’s the sharks. How many sharks supporters here ( and by here, I mean in Joburg, and drive around with a shark sticker – mostly incorrectly applied – on their car) supported them before 1990?
How many, on the other hand, bought into the marketing hype, and believed the sharks to suddenly be the best team in the country?

  • @Greg (Comment 152) : I hear you, and you get that with all the supporters. Even now the lions with the cash flow will get some supporters. But I don’t think many people will disagree that the bulls have the most of those type of fans.

  • @Ben (Comment 154) : With the Lions it could have turned out that way, and may still do so, there was an influx of money, and more on the way, and this brought a lot of ‘supporters’ out of the closet. Had the Lions started winning a lot of games, they would have stayed out, with them losing, a lot of these ‘supporters’ have gone back into hiding.

Do the bulls have the most of these kinds? Maybe, maybe not, I guess it depends where you are, and who you support.

By the way, I am a Man Utd supporter, and have been for about 35 years now!

  • @Ben (Comment 154) : OK. I don’t think we can write supporters off based on the length of their support stint. Or even the blue-blooded credentials of that support. There’s a strange parallel here between rugby and rock and roll here… in my wicked, wasted youth I saw first hand the battle between die hard fans of certain bands who loved the music and those who just loved the band members. Although for very different reasons, the level of support from those fans was identical and equally, um, passionate!
Can any team afford to disqualify or berate supporters for not being there for the right reasons? What ARE the right reasons for support? ARE there “right” reasons for support? Though it may pain me to say so, the one-can-short-of-a-six-pack blue bulls fans who paint their gentlemen’s areas blue each week may be the subject of derision among those of us with IQs, but you can’t doubt their support!
Likewise, the lovely ladies who bedeck the corridors of Kings Park each week with their carefully coutured outfits and coiffed bonces may be there to “be seen” and giggle over SuperPat’s “irresistible” curls, but should we turn them away on the grounds that their support is fuelled by hormones more than a taste for exquisite rugby?
I don’t think we should be pontificating on exactly what is politically correct in terms of Sharks support, but rather gracefully accepting all forms of support from allcomers, because that’s what Sharks fans are – welcoming and warm as opposed to a bit boneheaded with blue dangly bits!

  • @Ben (Comment 162) : hehehe. Chelsea was the first team I supported as a wee thing getting off the plane from Kenya when England last won the world cup. I switched to Liverpool because I fell “in love” with Kevin Keegan. I grew up, Keegan left, curly perms became extremely passe, but I am still a Liverpool supporter and will be to my dying day.

  • @rekinek (Comment 161) : Defintely not! I do, however, enjoy the brand of rugby they usually play. What irks me is the johnny come lately supporter who insists that the sharks are the best team who have ever been, and ever will be. They forget, however, the lean years, the pre 1990 times, when the sharks – banana boys back then – couldn’t play their way out of the B-section of the Currie Cup. Have they turned that around? For the moment yes, and they may well continue to do so, and if they do, good luck to them.

  • @Greg (Comment 164) : Dont forget the Kevin Putt years…neither the fact that we had to wait 12 yrs for a cup – so all in all – you could still be a Sharks supporter if you have started supporting them and still are post 1990…

I wonder about those people who come out of the woodwork and support a team, any team – it may appear that I am picking on sharks supporters now, I’m not really – when that team is winning, and disappear again when the team is losing.

Ben as a Chelsea supporter will agree here, the pre- and post Abromovich supporters are a case in point.

  • Since we have the Mini Cooper connotation, I say welcome to the Clubman! I’m old school, a rugby fan who started out pre-1992, the days when all we had was the bitter rivalry of local provincial rugby. I like players in the other SA sides but I’ve never been able to back the other SA teams. In an ideal world I’ve always imagined us winning S12/14 and the others occupying the bottom 3 spots (for some unexplainable reason I don’t dislike Vrystaat). In the 1993 S10 final, I rooted for Auckland against arrogant Louis Luyt’s Tvl . The 1999 S12 semi-final vs Otago was THE highlight in my career of disliking WP/Stormers who stole our colour that same season. There are plenty of reasons why the Bulls irritate the you-know-what out of me but somehow the images of Wynie Strydom and Steve Hofmeyr at Loftus top my list. I am so happy that the new format will force ALL my fellow Sharks supporters to finally see the light. Long end the other teams last!

@Ben (Comment 148) : Oh and by the way Ben , my Dad supports ManUtd as he was born in that part of England πŸ˜‰ (because as you say not all supporters are glory hunters πŸ™‚ )

And yes people that is a pic of me and Juandre Kruger who is now a Bulls player , But at the time he was a Northampton Saints player , whom are the team I support in the Uk . πŸ™‚
