Three weeks for Hargs

Sharks coach John Plumtree yesterday confirmed the bad news that lock Alistair Hargreaves has sustained a hairline fracture to his AC joint. The big second-rower was replaced by Gerhard Mostert against the Stormers last weekend and was seen looking somewhat dejected on the sidelines afterwards, clutching a bag of ice to his shoulder.

The injury shouldn’t keep Hargs out for more than 2-3 weeks, meaning he may be fit to face the Hurricanes over the Easter weekend, but is probably more likely to make his return against the self-same Stormers a week later at Newlands. As reported yesterday, Ross Skeate wins promotion to the Sharks 22, but it is Mostert who is likely to wear the number 5 jersey against the Lions this weekend.

In other news, Stefan Terblanche will make his 200th appearance for the Sharks in all competitions when he runs out in the black and white this weekend. The Sharks team should be announced tomorrow and it remains to be seen whether Plumtree will make sweeping changes after a disappointing 3-week losing run.

Congrats to Stef. The guy has been a great servant of Sharks rugby and a legend in their books.

  • This might come as a bit of a cliche because I criticized Stef in the last 2 weeks or so but this guy is a real legend for Sharks rugby! Congrats Oupa Stef!

  • @grant10 (Comment 3) : We’ll all find out tomorrow. I’m not expecting too many changes from Plum, it’s not his style.

  • “it remains to be seen whether Plumtree will make sweeping changes after a disappointing 3-week losing run.” My response would be: why not? It’s clear after 3 losses in a row that something isn’t working and a fixture against the worst team in the competition would be a good exercise in giving some of the fringe players a chance to put their hands up.
I would say definitely give Adi and Hoffman a start

  • Probably good for Hargs to take a bit of a break and we have decent back up in the lock position.

  • Just pulled this from SharksRugby.co.za

“Two matches for the SA Under 21 side as a junior. Four midweek games for the Springboks. 37 Test caps. 87 matches for Ospreys. Three games for the Barbarians and one for the SA Barbarians. 67 games for Boland. 112 Vodacom Super Rugby matches. 87 Absa Currie Cup games.
    199 matches for The Sharks.

An incredible 400 first class matches! ”

That is quite a number Turbo…Very Very Very Well Done Indeed.

  • We need to get some performances out of Skeate. He has been injured for most of the time…not his fault I know, but would be nice to get a return on our investment in him!

Well done Oupa Stef…the amount of stick this guy has received over the years for his performances for both the Boks and Sharks has been unwarranted..but he’s showed his character!
