Welcome to the Windhoek Lager Team of the Week. We have decided to make it an all South African team and base it only on the weekend matches. So if your favourite player did not play on the weekend, he will not be in the team.

Thanks must go to Windhoek Lager for sponsoring this weekly Team. We will have a Team of the Year competition at the end of the season, so make sure to take note of certain players who consistently make the team.

[adrotate banner=”47″]

1. Coenie Oosthuizen – Started off slowly but really came through for his team.

2. Gary Botha – Had a strong game for the Bulls

3. Brock Harries – Gave Beast a real hard time.

4. Bakkies Botha – He is showing some of his best form again.

5. Andries Bekker – First made Matfield his bitch, and now completely ruined the Sharks lineout. What a player!

6. Schalk Burger – A humble as ever captain and showed what a team can do with a good leader.

7. Willem Alberts – Fails to disappoint, even when his team loses.

8. Pierre Spies – Another good performance this season.

9. Sarel Pretorius – This guy can play some rugby!

10. Morne Steyn – Single-bootedly got his team the away win.

11. Bjorn Basson – Has to be the best winger in South Africa under the high ball!

12. Doppies la Grange – Gets himself involved in all aspects of the game.

13. Jaque Fourie – Showed us how an attacking centre should play.

14. Francois Hougaard – Scored a good try to cap a good game on the wing.

15. Gio Aplon – Great heart on defence and fleet footed on attack, great combination.

  • Promising to see some of the “old faithfulls” coming through…

On current form I really think Bekker should be replacing Matfield as the 1st choice Lock for the WC. So it’s a pity that he didn’t play much last year, because like Bismark, Bekker needs time to prove to Div et al that he deserves to dethrone the “king”

  • Agree with most of the team except:

    6. Daniel – the best player for the Sharks on Sat despite the Supersport MOM going elsewhere.
    7. Schalk – deservedly so. I think Alberts was outplayed for once in his life.
    8. Johnson – not my best choice normally but really played well for the Cheetahs
    9. The King has not left the building – FdP made Morne Steyn look good.
    12. Bosman – can hear the groans, but think about it… Was JDV allowed to do anything with aplomb… totally shut down, and Bossie made a handy break but let down by bad support running from team mates…

  • Don’t want to sound too negative but my prediction is for the Boks to crash out of the WC semi final IF Pdiv decides to choose experienced instead of form players. Could win this thing if he chooses to go with the form players from this year, IMO.

    @Ben (Comment 9) :

I still believe that he is the perfect supersub for the bokke. The way he played end of last year for the bokke for the last 30 in each game was incredible. He may just be that X-Factor we need in the WC.

    Doppies was a lot better.

I`m not convinced with Pierre Spies either. Would`ve gone with Duane or Johnson

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 12) : Johnson only played about 10 or 20 minutes of the game. Duane had another good showing but I believe Spies had a very good match. By far the best of the SA 8’s the past weekend.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 12) : @Letgo (Comment 15) : Was searching for anyone but Fatty Vermeulen… Thought Johnson played well when he came on…. Can’t be Kanko because in all honesty Vermeulen was better on Saturday.

Doppies is good at getting his line away, but the chap is about as safe as an open barn door on defence.

Considering who Bosman was facing and how he managed to put the Saders disappointment behind him (lets face it – trying to defend against Carter and SBW on the front foot behind a go forward scrum is a bit of a nightmare. Especially if JLP is not known to be a Lem/Butch defender at 10) he did excellently. I thought he at least matched JDV in all aspects of the game.

    His break was excellent too.
