Sharks XV do the job

The Sharks XV came away with maximum points from their game against the Leopards at Kings Park in the curtain raiser for the Sharks vs Lions game.

The Sharks XV started the first half dominantly, attacking non stop for the first 15 minutes or so, scoring two early tries through Mark Richards and Rosko Specman. The middle part of the first half was a period of lost opportunities for the Leopards, after dropping the ball with an open tryline and then not being able to get points after an extended period camping in the Sharks 22m.

The Sharks XV ended the half off strongly with the wings getting in on the action again, first Specman picking up his second of the day and then Mark Richards securing the bonus point with his second try. The star of the first half had to be Kyle Cooper who not once, but three times ran 20-30 meters after breaking the Leopards line. Fantastic stuff from the hooker!

The Sharks chose not to go into the change room at half time and were on the field the entire time, why exactly I am not sure. No changes were made at half time.

The second half was rather disappointing and one felt that the Sharks took their foot off the pedal and coasted to full time, with very little attacking play from them. They did however manage to score another two tries, first through Marcell Coetzee, who had a massive game in the Black and White, improving game after game. The second try of the half came on the hooter with Dan Adonga scoring under the poles.

The Leopards did manage to get themselves on the scoreboard through Walter Venter, but it was too little too late from the Leopards who were never really in the game.

The biggest positive from this game is undoubtedly the fact that Jean Deysel managed a good 65 minutes on the park, relishing the opportunity to hit it up from first receiver and making crunching tackles! Kyle Cooper had a storming game in which he showed some of the from we saw from him in the Currie Cup, with bustling runs through the midfield, literally running away from all his support.

Although I felt the Sharks XV could have put a few more points over the Leopards, a win is a win and they did the job without any glaring injury concerns.

  • Well done boys 🙂 I feel so sorry for Craig Burden though – I think he might have to step aside for Kyle Cooper, or change positions again! The kid is gonna be huge.

  • I don’t feel that we played our best backline….we were exposed a couple of times out wide I really enjoyed the game-just to see who is on there way up… I hope we produce a lot of boks…because we can afford playing a lot of these boys in the curry cup…marcel coetzee…what a talent….groenewalt, and cronje!!! The kid has the game-let him make the step up…we need bosman in that team to feel the presure of these youngsters…love the sharks setup at the moment!

  • The sky is the limit for Marcell Coetzee. At least that the way it looks right now. Anyone who watched only 1 u19 last year and then this game yesterday would be forgiven for asking if we have 2 players with the same name coz that’s how much he’s improved – he looks like a different player. I couldn’t help but compare his performance to the handful I’ve seen this season of Bulls hopeful CJ Stander, a player a year older than Marcell. Stander, who captained SA Schools was the best loosefwd coming out of our respected schools system in 2008. At that stage he had future Bok written all over him and has made good progress in the last 3 yrs, representing the Bulls senior team on a no. of occasions. However right now Stander looks like he doesn’t belong on the same field as Marcell. That is how good Marcell has become in a short time.

This was a good win for the Sharks XV. The Leopards showed that they aren’t a Mickey Mouse VodaCup team. Our line breaks and finishing were of a very high quality.

  • @Ben (Comment 7) : I think he’s still injured.
I also think he’ll have his work cut out for him displacing Richards, Specman, Verster and Sithole in the months to come. So I wouldn’t be surprised if this time next year we see him running out in the colours of a different team.

  • @Ben (Comment 11) :Agree, Guy was poor on Saturday. He cannot dominate, poor tactical kicking and distribution. Too many balls lands between players. He cannot get his backline away. Not even one backline ball to the wings. Don’t be confused. Specs and Mark scored their tries during broken play and individual brilliance by themselves or other players line brakes or going blind side.

I am a bit worried. Scored only one try in the second half up to the 79 minute. The last try was scored by good defence by Heimar Williams on Rautenbach, ball was lost and the second try was scored on the hooter. The goal kicking is a concern going into the playoffs. Maybe they happy just making the playoffs and not winning this year. Next year they will be more experienced.

However, a win is a win. Don’t look back. Go Sharks XV !!!
