De Villiers to miss Lions clash

Planet Rugby reports Springbok centre Jean de Villiers will be out of action for the second successive week when the Stormers face the Lions in a crucial Super Rugby match, in Johannesburg at the weekend.

The team’s management is also sweating over the fitness of star wing Bryan Habana who is suffering from a “stiff shoulder”.

Juan de Jongh, who deputised for De Villiers in the Stormers’ 19-6 defeat to the Reds at Newlands last Saturday, will start again at inside centre against the Lions.

Stormers coach Allister Coetzee admitted that it’s still unclear who would replace Habana if he was to miss Saturday’s clash.

He could bring in JJ Engelbrecht from the Vodacom Cup team as a direct replacement for Habana or Gio Aplon could be moved from full-back to wing to make way for Conrad Jantjes or Lionel Cronje, at the back.

Coetzee said he was unlikely to make any other changes to his side. It was expected that he would give some players a break, especially after some gruelling battles in recent weeks.

“If we had changed the team last weekend and had the same result then everyone would have said ‘Why did you change a winning team?’ Yes, there are players who have had seven weeks of rugby now, but I believe that the more you play the better you become,” Coetzee told Supersport.

“It’s not by playing that you really become fatigued. It’s about the lead-up to the game. In my view, the longer you can keep the combinations together the better,”

Despite their defeat to the Reds the Stormers are still leading the standings in the South African conference.

However, they will not be under-estimating the Lions, who have only had one victory this season. The Johannesburg-based side battled bravely before suffering a close defeat in a pre-season friendly, at Newlands.
