The Lions are back at home after their disastrous trip to the Durban, and will not be feeling any better as they face a Stormers team that will be hell bent on returning to winning ways after their surprising loss to the Reds at Newlands last week.

Lions coach John Mitchell made wholesale changes to his team in an effort to get a win over their Western Cape opponents, whilst the opposition coach was forced into a few changes by injury.

The Cape team should be way too strong for the Johannesburg franchise and will run out easy victors.

  • I think the lions might just show these mountain goats..something bout the stormers doesn’t gel well with me..they not playing the same rugby as the reds and crusaders and remind me of the sharks team of 08 n 09..good enough to win but not good enough to show character in a game where they might be trailing..but we will see come 7pm

  • @Big Fish (Comment 33) : I agree with the statement but the Lions aren’t a case of a Union trying to buy a team. All RFUs buy players to fill holes . I just think another blogger was spot on last week. It’s the adage of quality vs quantity. The Lions chequebook has brought quantity but is yet to bring them in true S/R value adders. They now have depth as witnessed in the VodaCup team + results but what they really needed was 2-3 x-factor players and BMT players instead of the run of the mill guys.

  • Lions would do well with a frans steyn or a butch james ,they have some up and coming talented players ,yet 99.9% of the team are nothing more than journeymen, sadly those players will only get you within 7 of a champ side ,you need some real talent to blitz a side .

The lions just dont have any firepower, they are like a stock standard car racing with a pimpd out gti with all the nos extas …lame analogy

  • @beet (Comment 35) : Think of the Crusaders, an outstanding team with an excellent track record. When they went to the market in the last couple of seasons, the acquisitions have been Robbie Freuan, Zac Guildford, Izzy Dagg and SBW. 4 players that make a huge difference. Not 7-8 guys who struggle to stand out on any given Saturday.

  • @beet (Comment 35) :
I have no issue with player recruitment – the Sharks have unfairly taken abuse for this for years, but it is a necessity in the professional game.

The issue I have with the Lions is that they are focused on big name signings, seemingly as a marketing ploy, and not enough on their clear administration and talent retention problems. I see no change in their play or results from last year.

  • @beet (Comment 38) :
Huge difference in pedigree and planning. Crusaders bought a 12 and 13 who complemented each other, and the world’s best 10.

Lions want to sign both Butch AND Fransie. How would that work bearing in mind the talent of Jantjie and Taute.

To my mind, Fransie has proven a poor flyhalf and a classy 12 or 15. Lions should really buy some better locks or loosies and play Butch OR Frans at 12 outside Jantjies.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 40) : I think we agree on the big picture and kind of hone in on different aspects to support our opinions.

The Lions and the Reds were in the same boat not so long ago. Both unions going nowhere that players didn’t want to be a part of – just sub Alberts, Fourie, Ludik, Jantjes, Januarie, Habana for Sharpe, Mitchell, Moore, Barnes. Now look where these 2 teams are. The Lions will do well to study the Reds model and implement it. That said I must admit that I have a tendency to oversimplify things. Morné touched on one NB success point about a week ago – the quality of the halves. Genia + Cooper are making it happen. I believed you’re correct in your assessment of Jano, was good in years gone by but no longer the case. Add that who Jantjies was a director making good decisions in last year’s C/C, is now a confidence lacking multiple crucial error maker and possibly one can see why the Lions haven’t improved. The guys they banked on to drive the team forward have let them down. I believe the Reds could suffer a similar fate to the Lions if the Genia/Cooper played like Vermaak/Jantjies had in previous matches this year.

  • @beet (Comment 41) :
I think you are right: we agree in general and differ on some details. Your points are very interesting though.

For example, I don’t believe that the Reds model will work in SA. If you can recall, Beale and Cooper were awful in their first 2 seasons – there are plenty of humorous youtube videos dedicated to them back then.

The SA public and coaches will never have the patience to allow players like that, or teams like the Reds, to develop.

We have too much talent in SA which leads us to show very little patience – hence the speed with which talented players come and go in our landscape.

In any event, I look at the Lions and see team lacking grunt in the locks, and balance in the loosies. Little surprise that their attacks are so static – they get such slow ball and their pick and drive seldom gets over the gain-line.

On the halfbacks, Vermaak has been poor, but he also gets poor ball. Jantjies needs a secondary decision-maker outside him at this stage of his career – Doppies is solid, but he is very uncreative.

This doesn’t get better with Murray at 13: I rate him, but he is not a finisher, and you must have this if you are going to play a Doppies-type player. I don’t think the Lions have worked with the right combinations – they must do so with new signings.

  • Either the LIONS stepped up or the Stormers do not look like potential SR winners…

And De Jongh has lil good plays but nothing comes from it….and his defense was poor…
Doppies ripped lose from him twice…Murray too and Hollenbagh…just to mention the midflieders…

Schalk should also pull up his socks….he is not test standard at the moment….

The Stormers would have been better had Grant played though…

    Hmmm

  • @Big Fish (Comment 42) :

Doppies is not creative…but he has very good and accurate distribution skills…
He passes accurately and he mostly passes to the person in the best position…he proved a few times yesterday when he kept it close or skipped when needed to..
He also has a good step and very solid defence (he stood up to even Alberts last week and that takes some doing)….

Murray on the other hand is less creative…breaks the line less and really does not at all look like he weighs 103KG…maybe we need to move Murray to the wing and play Hollenbach at 13….and if Frans joins play him at 13…

Jantjies should be understudy…don’t think he has what it takes to start or lead at 10…would be a great understudy to Butch and Pretorius…could learn a bit from both players that can help mould him…both bring a dif styles to he game…

Vermaak is like in his own world when playing…he passes slightly slow and the 2/3 step and pass does not help matters either….but Kocket has not been setting the world alight either….
