Lambie & Smit Start

As anticipated, Patrick Lambie returns from injury to start for The Sharks in their ninth match of the Vodacom Super Rugby tournament against the Hurricanes at Mr Price KINGS PARK on Saturday (5.05pm kick-off).

Michael Marnewick reports for Sharksrugby.co.za that Lambie suffered a hand injury against the Chiefs and has missed the last three matches with Jacques-Louis Potgieter starting at flyhalf in his place. Bismarck du Plessis has not recovered sufficiently from the injury he picked up against the Lions two weeks ago and captain John Smit will start at hooker with Tendai Mtawarira and Eugene van Staden on either side of him.

Ross Skeate starts for the first time this season and will partner Steven Sykes in the second row with Gerhard Mostert named amongst the reserves while Jacques Botes and Keegan Daniel swapping jerseys is the only change to the loose-forward trio.

Aside from Lambie getting a start, the only other change to the backline sees Odwa Ndungane moved to the replacements with Lwazi Mvovo starting on the left wing and JP Pietersen occupying the right. Ndungane has been a real pillar for The Sharks and has started all eight games to date.

The final change comes on the bench where Craig Burden returns as back-up for Smit.

After last week’s 97 point aggregate score between the Hurricanes and Cheetahs, while such a high-scoring match cannot be expected, Sharks coach John Plumtree admits that there will be plenty of running rugby now that the torturous Durban summer conditions appear to be behind us.

“With the cooler weather, running rugby and ball-handling become that much easier to control,” he explains. “And bonus points have been a crucial part of our campaign and we’ve managed to stay in touch with the top sides which has been encouraging. We’re always looking to score the four tries, it’s just about how we want to play the game.

“We don’t want to be predictable, we want to be able to play from all areas of the field and we want to play to space – wherever that space is. That’s how we’re playing of late and how we promised we’d be playing. Sometimes it doesn’t go as well as others but certainly we want to be a side that is proactive in terms of using the ball.”

  • @Charlie (Comment 5) : This was the ideal game for doing it. Smit is starting so Stef isn’t captain. Could have given Oupa some extra time to rest.

  • @KSA Shark © (Comment 1) : Hoffman can cover flyhalf as well but it’s still a risk. I suppose Bosman can go into flyhalf if needed.

Hope John has a good game to shut his critics.

    Go Sharks. 😎

  • Hoffman covers 9, Bosman covers 10, Adi covers 12 and 13, Odwa covers 11, 14 and 15. It’s not rocket science guys. Is Jannie being rested or has Eugene overtaken him…seems like the latter.

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 27) : I think Eugene is a very underrated player. He offers more in general play than Jannie I think and he’s probably just as good at scrum time as Jannie.

Hoffman has played at 10 for WP before so we are well covered in those positions

I`m happy with this team. Plum is doing the best he can with what he`s got available right now.

Now we just need Deysel back on the flank and we`re ready to make a come-back! 😛

  • @Pokkel (comment 32):
When and where did he say this? Just searched all the sites I can think of. Heard he wants him to get game time in the VC and will only call him back after our bye…unless Deysel is feeling the pressure and wants to get back on the field and show PDV what he has to offer…I would too if players like Stegman and Portgieter were getting a look into. IMO, he mustn’t be rushed unless he is really ready and will be used as an impact player.

  • @robdylan (Comment 37) : On Sharksrugby, “Smits role defined”, the article in which Plum also tells Pdivvy that he will play Smit in different positions and not only at hooker.
Im really surprised that the media has not picked this up and made something of it.
