Beware of the ‘Headphone-less’ Hurricanes

Some rugby followers in the ‘Deep South’ of New Zealand have always found it a strange phenomena, what phenomena – ‘The Headphone Wearing ‘culture of rugby players.

The day a certain Jonah Lomu playing for the Hurricanes donned a pair of big, in-fact huge black headphones as he went to and from matches – a culture, trend or whatever you want to call it, was born. Pretty much since the Lomu days, Hurricane sides have been stacked full of headphone wearers. Often this has distanced them from the mainstream and the general rugby punter in the street. Not many of us walk down the street in public or pop into work wearing this type of headphone. In fact in many cases headphone wearing has made Hurricane sides a bit of a joke in recent seasons. So when new Hurricanes Coach, Mark Hammett turned up, who knows what he made of it. A lot has been written about this year’s failings of the Hurricanes and the troubles within the camp. Few know of the internal goings on, but last week it was interesting to see that a few less headphones were around the Hurricanes camp.

Last Saturday against the Cheetahs the Canes recorded a vital win for their season. Now I’m not saying this win had anything to do with the lack of headphones worn to the game, but it will be interesting to see how many are worn to the ‘Shark Tank’ this weekend.

The Hurricanes team for the match against the Sharks in Durban has been announced.

Fullback Cory Jane rejoins the team after missing the previous two weeks due to the birth of his third child. The only other change to the starting fifteen is Neemia Tialata starts at tighthead with Michael Bent on the bench.

Players not considered for selection due to injury include – Karl Lowe (knee), Rodney So’oialo (lower back), Conrad Smith (broken nose) and Aaron Cruden (Achilles).

The Hurricanes team is as follows:

1. John Schwalger
2. Andrew Hore (c)
3. Neemia Tialata
4. Jeremy Thrush
5. James Broadhurst
6. Jack Lam
7. Serge Lilo
8. Victor Vito
9. Tyson Keats
10. Daniel Kirkpatrick
11. Hosea Gear
12. Ma’a Nonu
13. Jayden Hayward
14. Alapati Leiua
15. Cory Jane

Reserves
16. Dane Coles
17. Michael Bent
18. Jason Eaton
19. Faifili Levave
20. Chris Eaton
21. Beauden Barrett
22. Andre Taylor

If you are lucky enough to get the opportunity to see the Hurricanes get off the bus on match day, have a quick count of the number of headphones being worn, and if the number is not in double figures be wary.

One is always wary of a ‘Headphone-less’ Hurricanes side.

  • Things are so bad under Hammett that Julian Savea who in all likelihood would have been bracketed as a breakthru player of the year if Colin Cooper was still in charge, now does even qualify for any kind of players not considered for selection list. I can only guess that another long term injured player doesn’t really want to be associated with the poor performing team and has asked not to be mentioned on the injured list. To protect his reputation he probably goes by the name of Wiri Peepu at the moment. 🙂

  • I am not taking this game lightly, these guys have lost to many games so far this season and are due a few more wins.

  • Ya the Cheetahs where not big on defense at all. But the Canes have always bothered me a bit, they are a team that can break the line with ease when they want to. I’m not expecting a walk over game, the boys got to be ready for this one, BIG TIME!
