Welcome to the Windhoek Lager Team of the Week for Round 9. We have decided to make it an all South African team and base it only on the weekend matches. So if your favourite player did not play on the weekend, he will not be in the team.

Thanks must go to Windhoek Lager for sponsoring this weekly Team. We will have a Team of the Year competition at the end of the season, so make sure to take note of certain players who consistently make the team.

1. Coenie Oosthuizen – There was little to write home about in the number 1 jersey this weekend… at least Coenie only gave away two penalties this time around and carried the ball well.

2. Bandise Maku– The former Bull looked good playing for the Lions and looked to get involved in everything.

3. Werner Kruger – Kind of there by default, cos all the good tightheads weren’t playing this round…

4. Wikus van Heerden – Made plenty of tackles and was also active with ball in hand.

5. Wilhelm Steenkamp – Yeoman work at the breakdown, in a week where both Matfield and Bekker were quiet.

6. Schalk Burger – Schalla wins this one on tackle count alone, but again, in a poor weekend for SA rugby, there weren’t a lot of standouts. Baywatch Grobbelaar comes a close second.

7. Mike Rhodes – Made more metres than his more fancied opponent Francois Louw and put in some big hits.

8. Pierre Spies – some parts of the country are talking up Duane Vermeulen, but stats don’t lie and it was the Bok incumbent who made the most ground this week.

9. Sarel Pretorius – Three tries – nuff said.

10. Burton Francis – His game at flyhalf was the surprise package of the round.

11. Riaan Smit – True Blue scored two good tries and was generally more involved in play than his closest rival, the Bulls’ Bjorn Basson.

12. Doppies la Grange – Solid rather than flashy, but the Lions man was good on defence whereas his opposite number (and next best 12) Juan de Jongh missed too many tackles.

13. Jaque Fourie – Mossie’s class was evident on a pretty dull day all round. Nice to see Waylon Murray doing some hard, straight running too.

14. Michael Killian – Marginally the best of an average lot.

15. Riaan Viljoen – Made huge metres for the Cheetahs, in an admittedly loose game, scoring two tries in the process.

  • this was hard…. there were literally no standout performances from anyone this weekend

  • 15. Riaan Viljoen. Made zero tackles, missed the two he attempted and failed to commit to tackling Thrush – resulting in a loss for the Cheetahs.
