Sharks prevail in entertaining Easter spectacle

The Sharks kept a partisan crowd of just under 31000 entertained to the end as they ran out comfortable 40-24 winners over the visiting Hurricanes, scoring five tries to the New Zealanders’ two. The win moves them up to within three points of the Stormers on the South African conference log in Super Rugby and sets the two teams up for a mouth-watering showdown next weekend in Cape Town.

Not that the Sharks were at their best today – in fact, for large portions of the game, they looked rusty and listless, unable to finish off any of the few opportunities they created. An uncharacteristically wayward goalkicking display from Pat Lambie kept his team under pressure and with Ma’a Nonu and his men running hard at them, the firs try was duly scored by the visitors. They came very close a few minutes later, but were denied by wonderful cover tackle from Lwazi Mvovo, who had a great game on the left wing.

The Sharks were very good in patches, though and the series of play that saw John Smit score the opening try was bloody breathtaking. Louis Ludik, enjoying his best game on attack for the Sharks yet, hit the line at pace and broke it, before the move was continued by Jacques Botes and JP Pietersen, who flung the scoring pass to the barraging skipper. A pair of penalties from each flyhalf saw the first half end with the scores level at 13-all.

A horror start to the second half saw Faifale Levavi score for the Canes literally from the kick-off, but the Sharks quickly cancelled that one out when another one of those lovely sweeping moves put Mvovo away in the corner. With Stuart Dickensen then doing his best to keep a flagging Canes outfit in the game, a pair of somewhat dodgy penalties saw them open up a six-point lead. The introduction of fresh legs for the Sharks – in the form of Jannie du Plessis and particularly Keegan Daniel, proved telling, with two tries in three minutes putting them in front, with a bonus point to boot. The first was scored by Meyer Bosman; the second by Mvovo again after a superb intercept.

Ryan Kankowski then added the prefect icing when he stretched over with a few minutes remaining to bag the fifth – and a convincing win for the Sharks. They’ll enjoy the win tonight (I’ll do so with them!) but there’s plenty of work to do ahead of the Stormers game next week.

Scorers:
Sharks – Try: John Smit, Meyer Bosman, Lwazi Mvovo (2), Ryan Kankowski. Conversions: Pat Lambie (3). Penalties: Lambie (3).
Hurricanes – Tries: Cory Jane, Faifili Levave. Conversion: Daniel Kirkpatrick. Penalties: Kirkpatrick (4).

  • Great win, but we´ll have to play 100% better if we want to beat the Stormers next week. Today served to show how crap the Hurricanes really are. Please Plum, can we start with Adi?

  • Mcleod must be dropped! I think he has become too big for his boots. He’s kicking ball away, he’s not as quick as he was clearing the ball at the ruck, he’s trying too much. Stick to what you know Mcleod…you are not Ruan Pienaar…stop trying to play like him..focus on what made us love you.Really starting to like Hoffman, hope it’s not because Mcleod is driving me up the wall!

  • Wonderful result but the first half was littered with basic errors and some players were not up to the challenge. Much better in the second half, particularly when the subs came on. Jacobs must get a start next week and Skeate should go back to the drawing board. Great to see Smit back to his old self.

The team came through and won the game, bonus point and all.

No need to change a winning formula.. Especially not going down to Newlands, where you want a settled pack and backline that know each other.

  • Regarding the comments made about McLeod above, what happens if you swop him for Hoffmann and suddenly our backline is null because we have a new scrummie doing things his own way.

McLeod had a good game, and is showing signs of hitting some good form again.

  • @ Rich, a winning formula as the scoreboard prove, but how many tries did we actually scored from structured play, our back three can do so much more and are actually limited with Stefan @ 13, he might have the odd quick hands involve, but lack pace to really keep up with the game or asking questions on attack for the opposition, most frustrating in kicking valueable possession away. But I hope the Sharks can beat the Stormers on current form. I doubt if Plum will make changes, but a minor adjustment won’t do harm, McCloed needs a wake-up call quickly !

Agree; Mcleod’s decision-making wasn’t great, and Stefan’s selection at 13 continues to amaze me.

Was very pleased with the fire and hunger though – thought Smit and Kanko especially got through yeoman’s work.

  • In a RWC year, the Boks, to me come first, and everyone in SA (crictics incl)know full well we can not go to NZ without Mr. Jonh “Barney” Smit. Now what to do? He certainly showed against the Canes, there is more than enough juice, skill and heart to lead his country at RWC2011. BUT Plum wants to win the Super15 and he wants to do it with Bissie (who is in the form of his life). As a back-up hooker, Smittie is excatly what we need, but is it what Smittie needs to silence all the critics? For me this might be a blessing in disguise if Bissie gets the bulk of game time and Smittie have a semi-easy time before the 3N and RWC starts. Just think about the PTA situation currently. Has our Bok stars just had enough? Considering they all had to go on EOY tour to save Pdivvie’s bacon. So, maybe all that Pdivvie asks of Plum and Smittie is to silence the critics, every now and then…

  • game after game i realise what a great signing Marius Joubert will be and is. Stef is costing and either needs to pick up his game or chuck. Adi should be starting, but they worried bout his defence, but i feel he has improved a lot on D, just a mental thing. Jacobs is finding some of his form again, and i would love to see him get a start. Bossie is also getting better everygame. Hope to see Deysel involved next week. Alberts is getting marked by like 3/4 guys everytime he gets the ball. With Deysel also playing it will give both more chance at the one on one and get us miles over the adavantage line. Mvovo scored 2 tries; but his workrate leaves a lot to be disired. Keen for the crucial clash next week.

Finish with panache – perhaps a more delicate way of saying “take it up the tailpipe from the Highlanders”?

Agree with you that the Crusaders have shown that set piece attack is still an option – and so have the Reds and Blues.

  • Thank-goodness for the Sharks, they were the only game worth watching and I gave up on the lions at halftime and they must have had a better second half but I thought my beauty sleep was a better idea after the first half. I think province may see their behinds this week. I noticed it coincided with a certain flyhalfs return to the team, bloody Stransky put the mokkers on his kicking though but that came right towards the end.

Not to flog a dead horse, but it also comes down to poor recruitment. The Lions palpably lack a pack leader – some good young guns, but no old heads.

They should have looked to sign a Daniesaurus or even a Mujati, rather than all the backline glamour-boys – it just seems that they lack the steel up front.

Still, they at least didn’t capitulate like they might have in the past.

  • Due to a premature return from the Splashy Fen music festival, courtesy of a sick kid, I only saw about 20-30 minutes of the second half, and then a highlights package of the game. From that limited perspective, there was a few things that caught my eye though:

    1) To paraphrase Mark Twain, it would appear that rumours of John Smit’s demise has been greatly exaggerated. While this was his first game at hooker, and while Bissie has been performing week in and week out, I’m starting to feel that it’s no longer such a foregone conclusion that Bissie is our best hooker. Simply put, Smitty was monstrous!

    2) How the hell does Keegan Daniel manage to punch so far above his weight? His aggro/kg ratio must be the highest in Super Rugby! And he’s showing a marked improvement in discipline.

    3) Charl McCloud seemed a yard off the pace or so at clearing the rucks. Maybe he was tired by the end of the game, but I’d really like to see Hoffman given a run.

    4) Apart from the many obvious attributes he brings to the game, Lambie displayed that one, uncoachable quality that is, in my opinion, particularly essential for flanks, flyhalves and inside centres – a real love of- and desire to tackle.

    5) Not sure if Stef kicked on from his good shwoing last week, but Adi really gives the backline some pizzaz. WHAT THE HELL DOES HE HAVE TO DO TO GET A START!?

    6) The bye really did Louis Ludick the world of good; he was full of incisive, hard running and must have been close to being the backline MVP.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 31) : Nope. I would also prefer to have Adi start ahead of Terblanche if John is there to Captain the side.

We didn’t score tries from structured play is not a worthy excuse to drop him though.

Drop him because we now have a starting Captain and because Adi needs a chance to show us he is better, but don’t say it is because we don’t score from structured play.

I WILL come back and ask how many tries we scored from structured play once he starts. 😉
