Sharks player ratings v Hurricanes

After a game that saw the Sharks dish up sublime play and uninspiring rubbish in more or less equal proportions, let’s have our customary bouquet and brickbat session.

1) Beast Mtawarira. The Sharks’ cast-iron loosehead was deservedly awarded man of the match for his exploits and we don’t disagree. Superb in all he did. 9/10
2) John Smit. A very impressive return to the hooking berth for our much-maligned skipper and one to get the poison pen brigade off his back, at least for the next few days. Well done, Skipper! 8/10
3) Eugene van Staden. Solid as a rock in the scrum and prominent in the loose, while still just a shade off his best form. 7/10
4) Steven Sykes. Another quiet game by his lofty standards – also missed the tackle on Nonu that lead to the first Canes try. Lineouts also weren’t anything to write home about for him. 5/10
5) Ross Skeate. Lots of hair, but little real impact, I felt. Failed to boss the lineouts as expected and made one or two glaring errors. 5/10
6) Jacques Botes. Adapted to the starting role well and worked hard all day. Seems to have lost a smidgen of his deadly pace, though. 7/10
7) Willem Alberts. His usual destructive self in a game where the big Hurricanes defenders knew what he was going to do yet were powerless to halt him as effectively a they’d have wished to. 8/10
8) Ryan Kankowski. Another great combination of power and panache from a player who is laying down BIG World Cup markers at number 8. The try was superb – I would love to see Pierre Spies exhibit similar ball skills. 8/10

9) Charl McLeod. Another patchy performance from the scrummy who seems to be resting on his laurels just a wee bit. Get back to the quick distribution game, Charl and only break when it’s REALLY on. 6/10
10) Pat Lambie. Rust was inevitable and Pat had a fair bit of it after 4 weeks out. His goal kicking was poor by his standards, but his general game was still a cut above any other local flyhalf. 7/10
11) Lwazi Mvovo. Two great tries at absolutely crucial times – and that intercept was pure class. Also really saved some blushes with a cracking cover tackle early in the game. 8/10
12) Meyer Bosman. Big on defence and did bloody well to score the bonus point. Meyer is becoming a vital cog in this machine. 8/10
13) Stefan Terblanche. Oom Stef looked an expensive luxury on a day when his captaincy skills weren’t called on. 5/10
14) JP Pietersen. Didn’t look quite as dangerous as against the Lions, but got nicely involved in the first half with some good runs. Tailed off as the game progressed, suggesting match fitness may be a concern. 7/10
15) Louis Ludik. Did everything you want a fullback to do on defence and showed some electrifying pace and acceleration joining the line. His best game to date for the Sharks. 8/10

16) Craig Burden. Accepted his 2-minute cameo at flank with good grace!
17) Jannie du Plessis. Truly magnificent impact contribution, both in the scrum and on the drive. 8/10
18) Gerhard Mostert. Added his typical fire and brimstone when he came on for Skeate. 7/10
19) Keegan Daniel. A match-changing cameo, with big hits and a few lovely breaks. The impact role suits Keegan to a T. 9/10
20) Conrad Hoffmann. Five minutes isn’t enough to rate him on, but DAMN, Hoffies looked sharp. We need to get this man playing a bit more.
21) Adrian Jacobs. Adi did it again, with a his pace and unpredictability really making the Sharks back look dangerous. Pity he only had 10 minutes in which to do it, though. 7/10
22) Odwa Ndungane. Not long enough to be rated this week.

  • what chances the 8 out of 10 skipper plays at 2 again this weekend?

I assure you the entire Western Cape are praying this is the case and Bissy sits on the bench.

  • i still feel smitty should have a 9 for this reason

besides his driving play defence and hitting of rucks i feel john with the quick hands allowed for 2 of the tries to be scored besides his own try

i have no douby bismark would not have passed where john did , and that kept the moves going

  • I ran into Smitty on Saturday. He’s looking relaxed and happy – like a man who is confident in his own abilities and proud of his achievements. He doesn’t see the need to come and attack people he doesn’t know on websites either.

Different class of individual all round. What a bloody legend. They teach them well at Boys High.

  • Grant 10 yeah like last year’s S14 pool game the very same Flo and Vermeulen were made to look like novices by Deysel and Alberts carry on being pathetic anyway your name is already pawpaw so some more nonsense from your lips can’t do you anymore damage

  • @robdylan (Comment 32) : I think frans louw is a tier above duane …however he still is b grade to willem alberts -and if you wish to play him at open side he is b grade to schalk and brussouw

For me his strengths are at the breakdown ,his ball carrying is alright but not as good as deysel alberts smith rossouw.

And against a team with the tempo of nz he cant dominate the collision and is to slow to be effective at open side

  • Good ratings Rob. Would only perhaps have given Skeate a 4. Also think that johna should have sticked with Sykes and shouldn’t have gone out wide. We had enough defenders on the outside. Smit should have helped Sykes tackle Nonu.

  • @Ben (Comment 37) : I’ve just looked at the stats… he made a lot of tackles and was very involved in continuity, with lots of handles… by far the most erros of any of the forwards though. Didn’t hit all that many rucks relative to the other tights, though.

You have a memory of a sieve me thinks….hehe. Stormers had Vermeulen, Flo and Burger same loosies as now. But if you don’t rate Deysel, go back and look at that game. Might give you some nightmares….hehehe. JOHN out scrummed T. Liebenberg as well. Do you remember? 😛 🙂

  • Louis Ludik took a quick throw-in whilst a Shark back were on the ground injured and the opponents had a lock in the bin and gifted a try to the ‘Canes.

Stupid play of the day should dock him a few points. Perhaps 6/10.

Oh yes. I think Basson deserve a little more than 1/10. The way he catches those high balls (sometimes) is sublime.

But over-all I’m still hope full. The Bulls’ problem is poor execution. If they can get that right they may just sneak into the semis.

    @fyndraai (Comment 51) :
Agree – execution has been terrible. But solving the problem is not easy – there is a palpable lack of belief amongst the Bulls. These guys need to remember that they have bossed all and sundry before – and Victor and Bakkies must lead the way here.
