Grant still doubtful for Sharks clash

Word from the Cape is that Stormers flyhalf Peter Grant is still struggling with the knee injury that ruled him out of his team’s trip to Joburg 10 days ago. The influential pivot, who many now rate as a World Cup certainty, is in a race against time to be fit to face the Sharks at Newlands.

Should Grant be ruled out of Saturday’s top-of-conference clash, it would represent an ironic reversal of fortunes, since it was the Sharks who were forced to take on the Stormers a few weeks back without their own match-winning flyhalf, Pat Lambie. The 20-year-old Bok spent a month on the sidelines after fracturing a finger against the Chiefs back in round 5, but is sure to be named in the Sharks side this weekend.

With the Stormers having lost their back-up flyhalf, Gary van Aswegen, to a long-term knee injury a fortnight ago, it’s the somewhat out-of-favour Lionel Cronje who will step into Grant’s big boots if the latter is indeed ruled out.

Cronje was a big-name signing for the Cape side when Rassie Erasmus lured him from the Free State two seasons ago. Seemingly the complete package after setting the world alight at junior level, the youngster has seen his shares drop alarmingly in the WP and Stormers setup and will view Saturday’s opportunity as a shot at redemption.

A call on Grant’s fitness will be made late in the week.

  • This could cost the Stormers, Grant has been in great form lately.

Would still love to see Grant and Lambie face off!

  • That’s too bad for the Stormers. It shows how important depth is in this game but as the Sharks saw lat year, its difficult to perform once you start losing a bunch of your flyhalfs.

  • the Stormers seem short on tries, relying more on Peter Grant to keep them ahead. My feeling is a loss when he is away injured could start a slide.

  • It doesn’t matter who plays flyhalf for the Stormers, Lambie will make him his biatch! πŸ™‚

  • I seem to remember a few weeks ago, when all and sundry were waxing lyrical about the Stormers, MornΓ© cautioning that they were one or two injuries away from having their campaign derailed. This weekend may be when we see just how prescient he was… the only thing worse from a Stormers perspective would be an injury to Dewald Duvenhage in the first ten minutes or so, and having I-ate-all-the-pies January come on…
