Brussouw’s Back… again!

The Cheetah’s have been bolstered by the return of two Boks – Heinrich Brussouw and Adriaan Strauss. They are up against the Brumbies who will be under the eye of World Cup winning coach Jake White at the end of the Super Rugby season. But the Brumbies season so far has been filled with turmoil when they sacked their coach early on leaving them unable to string together any consistent performances to speak of. This might be a great opportunity for the Cheetahs to get another win over an Australian team, after their fantastic dismantling of an under-par Waratahs earlier this season.

There should be a few Bok supporters keen to see how Brussouw goes and holding thumbs he gets through unscathed, and gets a few games under his belt to be a feature in the TriNations as well as resuming the battle for the number 6 jersey which Schalk Burger’s been dominating in his absence.

I also want to give a special mention to Leon Karemaker who might play off the bench, a truly inspirational player who is playing with Stargardt Syndrome which unfortunately puts a black spot in the centre of his vision so he’s learnt to rely on his peripheral to play. Some of you may remember him from his u21 Bok years where he first made his presence known, before struggling to find a team willing to take a chance on his health before Dawie Theron of the Griquas gave him a chance.

Teams to play tomorrow at 19:10:
Cheetahs:

15 Riaan Viljoen, 14 Philip Burger, 13 Robert Ebersohn, 12 Corne Uys, 11 Ryno Benjamin, 10 Sias Ebersohn, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Ashley Johnson, 7 Davon Raubenheimer, 6 Heinrich Brüssow, 5 Wilhelm Steenkamp, 4 Francois Uys, 3 WP Nel, 2 Adriaan Strauss (captain), 1 Coenie Oosthuizen

Substitutes: 16 Ryno Barnes, 17 Lourens Adriaanse, 18 Martin Muller, 19 Leon Karemaker, 20 Tewis de Bruyn, 21 Naas Olivier, 22 Hennie Daniller

  • @Ben (Comment 1) : ja, he was excellent. I googled him a while ago because I remember him from the u20 days and wondered where he went, so glad he’s still doing his passion despite all the challenges.

  • I believe he played club rugby in WC for quite a few years but I thought he just wasn’t good enough. At one stage he was in the WP system and about the make the step up.
Little did I know he was suffering from illness.

  • Apparently he was also diagnosed with diabetes, lost something crazy like 20kg’s. After no SA clubs wanted to take a chance with him he went to France, until news of his eyesight did the rounds and he suddenly couldn’t renew a contract.
Flip, I have so much respect for him. Against all odds as well.

Also, you may not believe this, but sometimes You magazine does have interesting interviews 😳

  • Had i known these two were back I would have gone with Cheetahs and not Brumbies on SB.

The guys who picked the Brumbies on LMS must be a little nervous now.

  • I wonder if Heinrich will remain loyal to the Cheetahs the same way Juan Smith has over the years.
I’m sure the top SA teams would fight tooth and nail to acquire his services.
By top SA sides I was referring to the Stormers, Sharks and Bulls. 😈
