Deysel back as Smit leads from hooker

John Plumtree has named his team to take on the Stormers at Newlands on Saturday, and has made a few surprising selections, first and foremost having left Bismarck du Plessis on the bench and starting with John Smit. This is a great confidence boost in Beast Mtawarira and John Smit who were both so impressive last week.

The other great news is the inclusion of Jean Deysel on the bench, and we are sure to see him making an impact in the second half. Alistair Hargreaves has been included on the bench and is sure to replace Ross Skeate at some point in the match. Skeate will be facing his old team at Newlands for the first time since leaving them for Europe.

Jannie du Plessis comes into the team with Eugene van Staden dropping to the bench after a good showing against the Hurricanes. The last change sees Odwa Ndungane coming onto the wing for Lwazi Mvovo in a move that must be purely to bring experience into the back three, with Mvovo sure to come on late in the game to bring fresh legs.

The Sharks
1. Tendai Mtawarira
2. John Smit (Captain)
3. Jannie du Plessis
4. Steven Sykes
5. Ross Skeate
6. Keegan Daniel
7. Willem Alberts
8. Ryan Kankowski
9. Charl McLeod
10. Patrick Lambie
11. JP Pietersen
12. Meyer Bosman
13. Stefan Terblanche
14. Odwa Ndungane
15. Louis Ludik

Replacements

16. Bismarck du Plessis
17. Eugene van Staden
18. Alistair Hargreaves
19. Jean Deysel
20. Conrad Hoffmann
21. Adrian Jacobs
22. Lwazi Mvovo

  • Just repeating what I said on another thread

    Great bench!
I think the likes of Bissie, Eugene, Deysel, Adi and Mvovo should all make a huge impact. Let’s hope Plum gives them each a good 25 – 30 minutes at the end!

  • @Pokkel (Comment 2) : Ditto here. I would have like Mostert in the setup, but I can sort of see the logic in his ommision – lending him to the Sharks XV bolsters their chances, and we do have Deysel to bring on the pain in the second half.

Really glad to see Smit getting another start.

Still completely, utterly, comprehensively, totally, thoroughly befuddled, perplexed, amazed, confounded and outraged by Adi’s continued absence from the starting line-up though.

  • I would not have changed much here except to have Mostert in the mix to really soften up the Stormers forwards.

The one thing that I’m REALLY worried about is the lineouts. I hope Smit, Skeate and Sykes have a plan to at least win our own lineouts.

  • Majorly strong bench that. Should be able to add big impetus.

Just looked at the bookies odds now…Stormers MAJOR favourites. Can almost get 2/1 on the Sharks….may have a piece of that!

  • should have started with bismarck and mvovo and put mostert also in the team. skeate must play vodacom cup, doesn’t rate this guy at all. i’m just hoping that we are still in the game when our replacements come on

  • Think a few of us are thinking the same here. I too would have liked Mostert there instead of Skeate. Also would have liked Adi to start and Mvovo. Though Odwa has been playing great rugby.

Pleased to see John getting another chance at hooker. Hope when Deysel comes on he replaces Keegan and not Alberts. Alberts and Deysel together are awesome.

One thing for sure we have a brilliant bench.

    Go Sharks. 😎

  • @Caratacus (Comment 15) : Bosman will have to move over if Pat comes off. Adi will go to inside centre.

  • @Caratacus (Comment 15) : Hoffman has played quite a bit at 10 and then Bosman could also cover 10 and if things go really pear shaped Adi can slot in there as well…..so I’m not too worried.

  • Why is everyone surprised Mvovo is on the bench? The guy is struggling with injury. All that tape on his leg last weekend was not just for show. If you see him on the bench after he comes off he is usually icing his leg. Maybe he needs to get that properly sorted out.

  • @war1 (Comment 19) :
Cant answer for everyone, but I am surprised because he seemed well enough to score 2 tries last week, and I didnt know he apparently is carrying an injury serious enough to relegate him to the bench.

In any event, Odwa has been in the best form of his career to date, so not too worried there.

  • nice team. I think the Sharks really have good depth.
Not to worried by lack of Potgieter – hopefully he practices kicking – he was really much better in this department last year.

Would like to see more of Hoffman – Mcleod needs a break.
