Time to build a bridge

We tend to go through a bit of a pattern here every time the Sharks lose. The day afterwards is filled with shock, anger and outrage. That tends to give way to self-pity, bitterness and an endless round of introspection and recriminations in the days that follow…

Finally, by the time we get to Wednesday or Thursday, we manage to pick ourselves up again and start pondering team selection for the next game. The doom and gloom is still there in the backs of our minds, but we also start to really hope and believe once more that the team will turn things around. More often than not, that’s exactly what they do, leading us into a completely different, euphoria-driven pattern the following week.

We all know we’re going to do it, so let’s just cut the crap and get over the Stormers loss already. Fact is, while it stung like hell to lose to those guys – again – there’s still a huge amount of rugby to be played this year and if we’ve learned one thing about Super Rugby, it’s that the play-off permutations are never settled halfway through the league phase. At all times, we need to remember that the Stormers still have their tour coming up and have already used up their 8 freebie points, while the Sharks are looking at a somewhat easier program as the competition approaches its climax.

Having now lost four times from 10 starts, the Sharks are well off the pace of the log-leading Blues, Reds and Crusaders as well, but with a fair few of those teams yet to face one another, one or two of them are bound to slip a little further back. The Durbanites still have their destiny firmly in their own hands and should they win all of their remaining matches – which really shouldn’t be all that far fetched – they can still finish well within the play-off contenders and possibly even still within spitting distance of that much-sought-after conference winner’s spot, depending on how the Stormers fare on tour. Sure, things may look pretty shitty right now, but we’re not scheduled to face another team anywhere near as good as the Stormers for a good few weeks to come, so there’s plenty of room to improve and start making inroads on the log again.

So while we’ll never shy away from criticism where it’s due – and there have been plenty of articles over the last few days pointing out exactly what we feel is wrong and needs work – let’s also not get too over-the-top and melodramatic about things either. The Sharks have been knocked back a bit, sure, but are far from dead and buried and the last thing they need is for their fans to start dressing for the funeral when there’s no sign of a body. The revival starts against the Brumbies this weekend and I’m pretty sure there are a few lads who are going to relish the opportunity to restore those dented reputations a little.

Come on, Sharks… show us what you can do.

  • Yes, I would agree with this, Rob. The Sharks are currently in sixth position, which is a playoff spot and still have a bye as well as games against the Lions and Cheetahs in hand. Add to this the Brumbies this weekend who have hardly been stellar this year. Bizarrely, the Sharks still have to play the Bulls twice as well and it depends on which Bulls team pitches up as to how those games will go. Basically the sharks are still looking good actually, and although they have lost 4 games, only the 2 to the Stormers were really “bad” loses. Its not impossible the Sharks could finish this weekend only 3 points shy of the Stormers again.

  • If the stromers lose this weekend and they lose against the blues on tour…..and we win all our remaining games we can top our conference.
If the bulls play at 100% of potential we should still beat them.

  • I think the important point made here is that our destiny is in our own hands; we’re not yet in one of those ludicrous “we *could* still make the playoffs if the Crusaders lose to the Cheetahs in New Zeeland and the Stormers beat the Bulls by 86 points but only score 2 tries in the process” scenarios that seem to be such a prominent feature of the SA rugby landscape…

  • Eish, Rob. It’s nice to be positive, but even you will have to admit that what’s wrong in the Sharks game ain’t gonna be fixed overnight.

We have struggled with just about every basic facet. When one goes back to the comments after the earlier matches, the feeling was that we made mistakes that could easily be rectified.

    None have.

In fact, we have actually added some to the mix, such as the lineout problems and getting smashed at the breakdowns. Throw in the inability to adapt a game plan when needed and key personnel not pulling their weight, and things don’t exactly look rosy for the rest of the comp.

Unless viewed through rose-tinted specs, of course πŸ˜‰

  • Sharks will have to win the rest of the their games to make the play offs. Gonna be tough. We still have Bulls twice and they are starting to find form, those two games will be very tough. Cheetahs will never be easy in Bloem nor Lions at Ellis Park. But we can. We still in the running. But one loss and we are out of it. Probably need to beat the Brumbies this week and with a bonus point to take the pressure off a bit.

    Go Sharks. 😎

  • It’s always nice to be positive, perhaps that’s our downfall right there. Sharks play a little bit of decent rugby for 20 mins out of 80 mins and we get all excited and give players ratings of 8\10 instead of measuring players for the duration they where on the field. Had we been more realistic, alarm bells should have gone off when we almost lost to the Rebels. We are off the pace good people…we are not attacking as much as we did in the CC yet Plum promised that we would..?? The cause of this should have been identified and corrected by now! Maybe in the future we should have more warm up games and spend more time on the training field in the preseason to get us back on track quickly…like the Stormers do. Was really pissed off after the game and not because I’m a bad loser but the manner of the beating we received…it was equivalent to police brutality during the apartheid days.

  • I notice that the bye points are mentioned again.

This seems to get mentioned by a number of people and I really don’t understand why. The bye points have zero effect on the outcome of your log position. I say again – ZERO.

So the fact that the Stormers ‘have used up’ their bye points is irrelevant.

Besides during your bye you get a max of 4 log points, whilst the teams playing can potentially pick up 5 log points.

But the fact remains the the bye points count for nothing. Nada. Zip. Zero.

Win more games than the other teams and you end up on top. Simples.

  • The way I see it, the Sharks have 3 major problems right now, that with a bit of juggling could be overcome or compensated. 1) The midfield sucks. We all know this, its no surprise. Maybe its time to give Swannepoel another run with Adi at 13. Cant be worse. Sharks may lose 2 kicking options outside of Lambie… but that may not be such a bad thing. 2) For all the comments about the balance of the loose forward trio, the truth is the Sharks miss a fetcher. They have been woeful at the breakdown for some time now, losing unnecessary turnovers at crucial times. Botes may help although he has lost a step. Maybe time to try someone new there. 3) The lineouts are a debacle. The Sharks theoretically have the 2 best hookers in the country, but the communication is poor and the locks are underachieving. Time for Hargreaves to step up and time for Sykes to take a rest. Start Mostert and Hargreaves and give Bresler another go off the bench. 4) Honourable mention remind Macleod his strength lies in giving Lambie crisp clean service, not trying to be Joost van der Westhuizen. He is still a good scrummie but needs to stick to the basics.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 32) : i must say i quite enjoyed this moment of clarity from BigFish the other day:

“Supporting a team is an issue of identity – whatever the reason you choose to identify with that team.

I identify with and support the Sharks because of my loyalty to them, and my memories growing up supporting the legends of the early-90?s. I supported them through the abomination that was the Hugh Reeece-Edwards and Kevin Putt era because of this.

Because of this conscious loyalty, I don’t have to convince myself that they are better than they are, that they are infallible or that they do not make stupid mistakes. My love of rugby means that I can support good rugby irrespective of who is playing it.

In my ungenerous moments, I sometimes wonder if the sunshine-happy fans have this need for blind cheerfulness and support because their loyalty is conditional on their team being a winning one – the stark choice being to either shift support to a team that is actually winning, or to delude themselves into believing that their team is doing better than they actually are.

  • PUHLEEZE…! πŸ˜†
Why is being positive considered soft?
You naysayers miss the point completely – being a positive person has NOTHING to do with being a pushover or jelly-like. You won’t find anyone who ever took me on in a serious fight saying I am a pushover… The thing is that I have learned to pick my fights, and understand that it’s not winning battles that counts, but winning the wars themselves.
Being positive comes from wisdom, which in turn comes from experience, and mostly from experience of negativity. Up close and personal experience.
Do NOT confuse a positive attitude with an inability to criticise or see fault where fault exists. Or with being perpetually in a state of misguided bliss. The epithets I hurl at the television when the Sharks get it wrong are evidence enough of the fact that I KNOW what a stuff-up looks like!
I just know that when I get negative I get angry, and when I get angry I get mean. And when I get mean I make tsunamis look gentle in comparison. And achieve absolutely nothing other than increasing my blood pressure and doing a fabulous impersonation of a twister ripping a trailer park to shreds.
For what? A game of rugby? Dudes, dudettes, life is FAR too short for that. Much as I love the Sharks, I am not going to let them losing adversely affect my personality. It’s the one God gave me, and I like it just the way it is! Sorry if some of you don’t!

I’m pretty sure that MOST of the bloggers here are not going to start supporting another team just because we lost one game and if they do then we don’t need them here anyway. I’ve also supported the Sharks through the tough times and I have also thrown a lot of abuse their way while watching a game. I also understand that SW is probably the ‘official’ unofficial Sharks fan site. I’m sure a couple of Sharks player read this site also and would not like to read how kak they were on the weekend. Some of these articles make it seems like the author is reprimanding his children. While I know it’s necessary to keep the crowd in a bit of control sometimes so we don’t become Voldy I also don’t feel like we should treat the fans like children.

For goodness sakes, how many bad games are these guys allowed? Most okes are anti-Bosman right now, but that was one bad game, and I can live with that. But surely as a coach you have to start identifying the consistently weak performers and bench them. Our Sharks XV have some great centers and the team is doing really well, surely it’s not too naive to think that one of our Sharks XV centers could be a better bet than the 35-year old carthorse?

The thing about writing is that no matter what the writer’s intention at the point of creation, different people interpret things differently. Especially on a site like this which is opinion-based.
I make a point of trying very hard to respect everyone’s opinion, even when that opinion differs from mine. Sometimes I fail. So forgive me for the odd occasions when I come across as patronising as a result. It’s not premeditated! πŸ˜›

I can’t actually sum up my current thoughts any better than our good mate war1 did… β€œAmazing how the Sharks have gone from being conference favourites to losing games we haven’t even played yet.” I think it’s time that we, as fans, put the Chiefs performance behind us and get fully behind the team for the next game, as though it were their last.

All this talk about how the Stormers already have one hand on the trophy is starting to get a little tired. The Cape side have done well – let’s not take that away from them – but they are, in reality, in a slightly worse position than the Sharks right now, whatever the log may suggest. They have yet to tour and they have already enjoyed their bye, after all and while they may currently be ahead on the log, by the slenderest of margins, they may well find it hard to maintain that lead once they too leave South Africa.

The Sharks have a number of hugely positive things going for them. They’ve managed to secure 11 points on tour so far (that’s very nearly three wins’ worth) and have the added bonus of being able to take a refreshed team to face the Crusaders at a neutral venue. Once that game is over, they then face a short trip back to the country ahead of their next game – far shorter than a nightmare trip back from Canterbury would have been. The naysayers need to actually grow up and count their blessings along with the rest of us now – as they join us in ALL getting behind the Sharks ahead of this weekend’s game. This London game gives us a far better chance of beating the Crusaders than we would have had with a tired team in the fourth match of a long tour, in their own backyard.

I know the many thousands of London-based Sharks fans will be backing our team to the hilt. It would be nice if some of the more fickle ones in South Africa could join in. The boys are going to come over the this side and give the Crusaders a hell of a good game, knowing full-well that if they play to their potential, they will win. Any thoughts about facing any other team in the weeks to come can wait, because the quickest way to get hammered in Super Rugby is to start pontificating about any game other than your next one.

Be careful, Crusaders – the Sharks are coming to London to take you down.

  • There is nothing wrong with threads like this one. How else can one motivate the troops. If the Stormers scores a few tries against the Crusaders, and the Saders are 24 – 3 down, does McCaw tell his team to have faith and to try harder and even try to lead by example or does he go and sulk in the corner. I’m pretty sure his team mates wont say, ”Ive heard that one before” and mock him about, they’ll probably do their best to win the game.
