Elephants, Hooligans and Referees

Duncan Johnstone writes on Rugby Heaven that elephants, hooligans and referees were all lumped together as Springboks coach Peter de Villiers delivered another one of his whacky sermons.

Ironically de Villiers’ latest gems were delivered as he announced that Rassie Erasmus will not only be the Springbok technical advisor for the World Cup but he will also handle a lot of the media focus.

That probably can’t come quick enough for South African rugby bosses after de Villiers fired off a few loose cannons agai

De Villiers couldn’t resist being sidetracked as he spoke of a need for the South African media to help provide a fresh perspective on the republic as the Boks prepare to defend the World Cup in New Zealand in September.

But the South African media have been quick to pick up on the latest extravaganza – probably not the way the coach wanted though.

De Villiers revealed that at the Boks’ just completed two-day national camp a lot of attention was paid to media relations.

“You guys took up most of our discussions. We actually saw you as an opportunity to take on the rest of the world,” de Villiers explained to a large press conference.

“We do understand going to the world that people don’t keep South Africans in high regard. They look down on us and think we’re a bunch of hooligans and that there are elephants running in the street.

“You can see it when referees make decisions … it’s always a kind of biased thing.

“We must stand together … show people we’re actually more sophisticated than people outside think.

“You guys (the media) can be the catalyst for us in taking us to the World Cup, spreading the right messages so when we get to New Zealand the international media don’t have any ammunition to derail us when we get there.

“The senior guys spoke about how we actually have to have a partnership with the media.”

From a coaching perspective Erasmus is an astute choice. But the South African press aren’t so sure of his choice to help ease the media mountain in front of de Villiers in this huge season. They describe Erasmus as being “reasonably media-shy and sometimes suspicious of the press”.

Nevertheless, de Villiers is at least finally acknowledging his shortfalls in this key area.

“It took me three years to realise how exhausting you guys can become,” De Villiers laughed.

“I needed someone at the back just to help us with that kind of things.”

  • I’m no PdV defender, but honestly, you all are very harsh with him. None of his statements are all that bad, and most at least have an element of truth to them. He has said much worse in the past, and been more of an embarrassment.
