White chasing an old Shark

Rumour has it that new Brumbies coach Jake White has already earmarked a player or two to bring in ahead of the 2012 Super Rugby season, which will be White’s first Super Rugby season.

The player first on the coach’s wishlist is that of ex-Sharks scrumhalf/flyhalf Ruan Pienaar, whom White has rated all along, once even comparing him to Australian flyhalf Stephen Larkham. Feeling from the Brumbies camp is that they never really replaced George Gregan after his retirement in 2007.

Pienaar, as we all know, can play almost any position in the backline, and will relish the opportunity to get back into Springbok selection territory.

  • Would be very surprised if he went there, would surely be a huge salary cut?

  • ruan would have to be going there to play 9 only, cause the Brumbies have to’omua, leallifano who are both better 10s than ruan.

  • @Megatron (Comment 6) : that could actually swing poor ruan. at least he wouldn’t have to worry that sooner or later he would have to play flyhalf. Though with his luck the two would be injured in no time

Medical staff – apparently he has first-hand knowledge of every injury known to man.

Was hoping the headline was referring to Oupa. 😳

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 8) : Just kidding! It would’ve been funnier if I’d said that Clyde Rathbone was coming out of retirement to captain the Brumbies in 2012!

  • Surely playing in Aus is not going to get Ruan any closer to Bok selection than playing in Europe. And, surely the salary is much better in Europe. Would not make sense to me, either he stays for the salary, or moves back to SA to get back into the selection mix. Of course this is after the RWC, and if selected for this year’s RWC, Ruan will have two RWCs under his belt, and perhaps Bok selection will not matter all that much to him. But then why take a pay cut?
