Sharks coach John Plumtree has named a changed side to take on the Brumbies on Saturday night, with news filtering through that Ryan Kankowski has picked up a niggling injury and will not take the field.

The team is once again captained by Stefan Terbalnche from the outside centre position in an unchanged backline. Conrad Hoffmann, Adi Jacobs and Lwazi Mvovo remain on the bench.

In the pack is where we see most of the changes, with Bismarck du Plessis back in starting line up after the injury to John Smit. Bismarck will join Beast Mtawarira and Jannie du Plessis in the front row. Alistair Hargreaves comes back into the starting line-up in place of Ross Skeate, who falls out of the match 22 altogether.

Jean Deysel starts the match after coming off the bench last weekend and teams up with Keegan Daniel and Willem Alberts, who has been moved to eighthman for the first time this season. Marcell Coetzee comes onto the bench to cover the loose forwards in the absence of Jacques Botes and Kankowski. Craig Burden is called up from the Sharks XV squad to cover hooker and Eugene van Staden covers the props with Anton Bresler the lock on the bench.

The team:

1. Tendai Mtawarira
2. Bismarck du Plessis
3. Jannie du Plessis
4. Steven Sykes
5. Alistair Hargreaves
6. Keegan Daniel
7. Jean Deysel
8. Willem Alberts
9. Charl McLeod
10. Patrick Lambie
11. JP Pietersen
12. Meyer Bosman
13. Stefan Terblanche (Captain)
14. Odwa Ndungane
15. Louis Ludik

Replacements

16. Craig Burden
17. Eugene van Staden
18. Anton Bresler
19. Marcell Coetzee
20. Conrad Hoffmann
21. Adrian Jacobs
22. Lwazi Mvovo

  • Would have preferred a Deysel at 6, Alberts at 7, Daniel at 8 combo myself, given that Keegan’s playmaker abilities are wasted at 6, and Deysel is no worse at playing to the ball than Keegan.

I guess we’ll never see Adi starting!

Personally I would start with JLP at 12 and Adi Jacobs at 13 and given the captains armband to Hargreaves.

But without Smit a much better team.

We should at least see how JLP goes at 12 in one or two games before thinking we have a crisis.

Swannie could be an option again and could look a different player outside Lambie. Further than that, Heimar Williams has won just about every junior award the Sharks have going, but is probably a year or two away from being ready for the big time.

  • Its sad that some players benefit from playing outside game players and some don’t.
I think Swannie had huge heart (just like Andries). Bosman is a professional but I don’t see the heart. His first reaction after the De Villiers tackle was to signal a knock-on…Andries, I believe, would have put his head in his hands or chased back. That for me was a defining moment in the game.

  • Well done to the management for backing another youngster in Coetzee, it is the best way to show that you believe in your own talent.Kleynhans will be ready next year.Durban Collegians are producing some fine youngsters. The word is out that the Lions want Coetzee as he is sitting on an shitty contract at the Sharks!!

But Marcell mustn’t be silly now. It’s not all about money when you’re 20 and the fact is, he’s improved 1000% on last year. I’m SURE the Sharks will sort him out if he carries on the way he’s going.

Moving to the Lions is a career dead end.

  • @basson (Comment 89) : ag ja… but they can talk all they like. I’m sure those closest to Marcell will advise him well and it’s not like he’s a guy who hasn’t been noticed by the Sharks. A guy like Whiteley left because he was nowhere near the senior team despite solid performances in the lower ranks… the fact that Marcell went on tour and is now poised to make his Super Rugby debut is a clear indication that he’s highly though of by the Sharks.

If he’d accept my BBM invite, I would explain this to him πŸ™‚

Discussion I was having with someone (can’t remember who) is that a lot of people fundamentally don’t understand the role of the inside centre. That makes it very easy to think a guy is playing poorly when he’s actually doing very well.

I agree, 12 is kind of like the front row of the backline, lots going on that a lot of people do not see or understand.

We, as supporters tend to be fickle, just a few weeks ago, people here were talking about what a great distributor Bosman is, but now, after one very poor defensive showing against the Stormers, he is terrible and should be dropped permanently.

I think he’s a very good leader, communicator, defender and distributor – in fact, his only real weakness (and I think it’s a big one) is a GLARING lack of pace. In the Shark’s counter-attack dominated game, that lack of pace becomes crucial.

  • @Puma (Comment 135) : From what I have seen, there are no missed throws, jumps or catches at the front of the lineout. Our problems are the middle and back of the lineouts. The front jumper is all about timing, and less about support. Middle and back jumpers must also be lifted to be successful. Since we are having problems at the middle and back, I think it is because of the lifters. In addition, I heard Sykes after missing a throw at the back, turn to his lifters and say “FFS where were you!” I don’t know why we are so poor lifting now and were good last year. Our props are different now, in that we played mostly with Van Staden and Cilliers in the 2010 CC. Perhaps Beast and Jannie are not doing what they should? I don’t know.

Supporting jumpers in the lineouts is a critical part of any props job on the field, just like scrumming. Why pick Marcell now with the vital semi final the Sharks XV have this weekend? They continue to shoot themselves in the foot. I would have played Keegan @ 8. Charl McLeod needs to be dropped for a game or 2 and Louis Ludik needs some rest.

  • @Ben (Comment 158) : Agree that Alberts must be rested soon. He is such a big strong lad, that he does not show signs of fatigue, but I can not imagine him playing all Super Rugby matches, some Bok matches and still be fit for the RWC.

yes he had 1 good game

i just reckon lambie needs someone next to him with speed and that can run off the ball

if you look closely to last weekends match even when bosman changed direction and ran off the ball he was so slow , lambie had to hold back on the pass

meaning bosman all the same got tackled behind the advantage line
the days of just running over people are gone as defences are so much better, saders dont run over people , they have speed and run around people

Instead he beafed up for the Super rugby comp and by doing that lost some more pace it seems. Not his fault I keep on saying. He doesn’t select himself for the team. Like you keep saying and I couldn’t agree with you more. He should be managed better. Much better.

We`ll get a comfortable result against the Brumbies.

He`ll retain his spot for the next match and we`ll only pay the price once we face the Bulls at Loftus.
