Skeate to bolster Sharks XV

As one of a number of anticipated changes to the Sharks lineup for Saturday’s clash against the Brumbies unfold, Sharksworld can confirm that Ross Skeate will be running out for the Sharks XV in the Vodacom Cup semi final, with his spot in the Sharks run-on team going to Alistair Hargreaves.

Eligibility rules introduced this season mean that neither Anton Bresler nor Gerhard Mostert – both of whom packed down in the second row for Sean Everitt’s side last week – can play in the Vodacom Cup knock-outs and from the perspective of retaining some much-needed experience in that outfit, it makes perfect sense for Skeate to play there, for the greater good of Sharks rugby. It is anticipated that either Mostert or Bresler will move up into the Sharks squad for the Brumbies game.

There will be a number of other changes too, with John Smit ruled out, meaning a return to the starting hooking berth for Bismarck du Plessis. Craig Burden will come into the squad as cover, while rumours persist that young Marcell Coetzee is lined up to play some role this weekend – although we’re not currently sure what that will be. While many fans are hoping to see changes to the backline – particularly the centre combination – based on what has been reported up until now it seems unlikely that any such changes will materialise.

There has, encouragingly, been much fighting talk coming out of the camp, though, with players such as Hargreaves and Willem Alberts emphasising the need for a shift in mindset after being comprehensively beaten by the Stormers. If that talk can be translated into appropriate on-field action, then we should see a vastly improved Sharks performance against the Brumbies on Saturday evening.

With the Sharks now eight points behind the conference-leading Stormers – and hanging on to knock-out contention by their fingernails – a good win against the men from Canberra, preferably with a bonus point, is not negotiable.

  • We want Riaan Swanepoel !! A big center, that can tackle and is showing good form for the SharksXV. Him and Adi could make a good combination

  • @basson (Comment 6) : I also like Marcell but I doubt he’ll play much SupeRugby this year….I hope we see a lot of Marcell in the CC this year and SupeRugby next year.

  • @basson (Comment 6) :

Marcell is a great talent.. But still quite young..

He will easily be able to play for the U21’s this year.. But should be in line to make the Currie Cup bench.

  • Skeate does not qualify. Poor Sharks communication or poor journalism.

  • @Speed7 (Comment 9) : not true. Skeate has only been in the super rugby squad 3 times. He confirmed via twitter that he’s playing. What more do you want?

  • Bresler or Mostert will be great! Both are way more aggresive than Skeate.

  • @SharksRTB (Comment 12) : i think skeate should work to become a lineout specialist.

skeate quite a tall fellow, but did anyone see how small he was compared to bekker over the weekend. and to think, bekker was soooo close to signing with the sharks a few years ago.
