Sharks XV counting the cost

While there are never any real positives to come out of a defeat, should the Sharks XV have won their semi-final against the Pampas XV on Friday afternoon, they’d have to dig pretty deep to find a fit match 22 to field in the final.

A number of players came off injured during the course of the game and it looks as though one or two of those injuries may unfortunately prove to be serious. Foremost amongst those is the finger injury suffered by hooker Kyle Cooper. The fiery number two is seeking medical advice today and more will be known later, but it looks as though he’s due a spell on the sidelines as a result of a thumb dislocation. With both John Smit and Bismarck du Plessis set to miss out on the entire Currie Cup, it would be a blow indeed if Cooper is forced to miss out on any of that competition as a result of the injury.

Wing Rosco Speckmann suffered a serious-looking shoulder injury as well, which looks likely to sideline him for a while and there will also be concern over the ankle injury picked up by flank Francois Kleinhans – who is due to depart for Italy with the SA Under 20 side next month. With winger Emil Schwarz already ruled out of the tournament after suffering a horror knee injury, it would be a blow indeed if Kleinhans were to miss out as well.

Outside centre Jerome Pretorius was another to come off against the Pampas, with a combination of knee and shoulder injuries troubling him. The good news is that neither seems all that serious in his case. We wish all the players involved the speediest possible recovery.

  • @robdylan (Comment 7) : Forgot about malton; jees we have some awesome talent at this Union.
Hope Frana won’t be out for more than 3 weeks, SA u/20’s need him. Don’t think Cooper will be out too long. Need to see Coetzee, Sithole, Jordaan and Frana get some gametime. Can give Deysel a rest when required and play Coetzee in the Backrow; Alberts should make the Bok squad. Don’t know how Frana will get gametime with Botes and Keegan still there; but he is still young, hope he still gets a run though…i want a proper fetcher!!! Also need to find a new Captain this CC. Smit gone and in my opinion Stef needs to retire or give up captaincy, because he is holding up the development of a new captain which we need to start Blooding now; before next year.
If Jacobs makes Bok squad; it will be a good time to use P.Jordaan’s x-factor off the bench.

Our U21 team is gonna be sick!!!

  • @GreatSharksays (Comment 12) : As always he has the potential; it is just about bringing it out. To me he has not performed close to his best. I feel doing a year of Springbok Sevens will help him develop and realise his true potential a lot faster than playing 15’s week in and week out. He will come back a player that attacks space; which is something that Spies has lost, which has negatively impacted his performances, i believe.
