Adi making the right noises

Coach John Plumtree was in a reserved mood when facing the media after the match against the Brumbies on Saturday evening, clearly more relieved than anything else that his team got through the match with five points in the bag and no serious injuries.

He started off by stating that he thought the Sharks were off the boil in the first half, even though they had 65% of the possession and had the Brumbies on defence for most of the half.

The reasoning for starting with Eugene van Staden and playing the Beast of the bench was also explained, as the Beast did not feel great during the warm ups, the coach decided to start with van Staden and not risk the Beast. The thinking behind playing Jacques-Louis Potgieter on the bench instead of Lwazi Mvovo was as simple as a few drops of rain ahead of kick off, with Plumtree preferring an extra kicker and fullback cover on the bench should the game have been played in the wet.

Inevitably, Adi Jacobs’ name came up in the discussions, and the coach made it very clear that Adi is forcing himself into selection reckoning by playing amazing rugby every chance he gets, bringing great speed and penetration to an otherwise dull backline.

Other than the points noted above, nothing else really stood out with the coach looing forward to the bye, saying that the players will enjoy it as they will be doing some conditioning before getting back into the thick of things next week ahead of the Bulls match.

  • Did any one see Owen Nkumane ( think I got the spelling wrong) asking plum about why Adi was not starting? He didn’t say it directly and plum got quite irritated.

  • things are looking up again. Although I can’t help thinking that we should be in a better position than this. The Bulls match should be good, if we bag 5 points there then we will be cruising – with only the tahs to worry about.

  • well Cruising might be a bit too generous, but we really have a easier end of the first round than the Stormers, we really should win all the games that we have left. So I really think (if we don’t conspire to rip defeat out of the jaws of victory) that we will canter into the playoffs (even if we don’t get that last bye)

  • @PhillipGibb (Comment 7) : I get your point. We should win our remaining games. I’m worrying a bit about the Lions fixture though. πŸ™‚

  • Beating the Bulls in a fortnight’s time is far from a foregone conclusion in my mind. We’ve blown hot and cold all season and are going to take a half to get going again after the bye. The Bulls are playing for their lives in this competition and will know that a loss will signal the end of their play-off hopes. Add to that the fact that Bryce Lawrence hates us and you have a recipe for disaster if we aren’t 100% focused.

  • Why can’t Oupa be shifted to fullback to give Adi a start? Louis Ludick has been playing most of the campaign anyway and could surely do with some rest? In my mind that doesn’t really disrupt the backline at all.

    @Honey Badger (Comment 10) : And though we can’t really fault either Odwa or JP’s performances to date, I agree that Mvovo deserves a start again.

  • @vanmartin (Comment 11) : Yes,odwa’s pace is lacking and he is getting old,a wing can not lose a yard.Mvovo has plenty,just because of his pace I think he should start every game.

  • @Honey Badger (Comment 12) : Odwa is being picked because of his “workrate”. His workrate wasn’t to flash in the last 2 games. Would start Mvovo any given day.

  • Yes his workrate is good but he gets chances and gets caught short and we all know that if mvovo got that opportunity he would have finished it.
    Mvovo=finisher

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 16) : Team selection has very little to do with what’s fair. Not giving Adi a start can also be argued to not be fair but we understand that we need someone like Oupa to captain the side. Besides that, it’s not about ‘dropping’ Ludik – it’s about resting him. HH wrote an excellent article about player rotation which would further justify this sort of decision.

  • @Mocho (Comment 3) :
    Saw that – Plumtree was not pleased. But it had to be asked. I read some dumb statement by Plumtree on sports24 along the lines of Adi playing the best rugby of his life and forcing his hand to select him.

    What crap – this is the standard he always plays – its just that the cupboard is so bare at centre that Adi can’t be ignored so easily any more.

    @Richard Ferguson (Comment 16) :
    Still fail to see how this is different from dropping our best and only 13 to accommodate an old fullback.
