Picking the results

It’s time for another round of “bye round politics”, where we put in our wishlist for how we want this weekend’s game to go. With the Sharks guaranteed four points courtesy of their second bye, how would we ideally want things to unfold to their best advantage in round 13?

Game 1: Higlanders v Hurricanes.

This one is really simple to figure out. We need the Canes to do us a favour and beat the Highlanders, just like that. The Sharks are currently 4 points ahead of the men from the South and if they were to lose, preferably without even getting a losing bonus, we could stretch that to 8 by the time the next round starts.

Game 2: Reds v Blues.

Picking a winner here is like being asked to kiss your sister. Both sides are starting to run away with things a little at the top of the log and the Sharks probably stand little realistic hope of catching whichever side wins here. Looking at it from a very pragmatic perspective, since the Blues are already two points ahead of the Reds, it would probably make more sense for the Auckland side to keep on winning. If the Reds lose without a bonus point here, they’ll end up a scant two log points ahead of the Sharks and with a few tough games still coming up, we could yet reel them in. We’ll have to worry about the Blues another day – at least we know we can beat them!

Game 3: Chiefs v Stormers.

This one is easy. Sorry Stormers, but we need the Chiefs to beat you well enough that you get no points from this game. That will put us level on points at the top of the South African conference, leaving us to overhaul you when you lose to the Blues the following week. No loyalty, just business.

Game 4: Brumbies v Lions.

This one doesn’t really matter, of course, but it would be nice if the Lions could win, since they are further back on the log. It would also completely kill any chance of a Brumbies play-off appearance (if that isn’t already the case). Plus the Lions team is so full of ex Sharks now that I don’t see how we can not support them!

Game 5: Bulls v Rebels

This is one where the result we need is unlikely to be the result we’ll get. While the Bulls are still a long way behind us, we don’t want them to come to Durban next week with anything riding on the game. Give the Bulls the merest sniff of anything and they will take it, so if the Rebels manage to beat them here, they’ll be 12 points behind us come next week and well out of the playoff race. That should, in theory, make the Sharks job easier on both occasions when the two sides meet.

Game 6: Cheetahs v Crusaders

Here’s another one that isn’t likely to go the way we want it to, but we’ll ask for it anyway. Can the Cheetahs beat the mighty Crusaders? Should that happen, we’ll end up just a point or two shy of the men from Christchurch and with them still needing to face both the Reds and the Blues, we could be well positioned to overtake them if we keep winning.

So, let’s put all of that into perspective and look at a theoretical log, should we get all the results we want.

1 Blues 51
2 Reds 45
3 Stormers 43
4 Crusaders 44
5 Sharks 43
6 Waratahs 41
——————————–
7 Highlanders 35
8 Bulls 31
9 Chiefs 29
10 Cheetahs 29
11 Hurricanes 28
12 Force 25
13 Rebels 24
14 Brumbies 22
15 Lions 18

  • And the final is at the ground of the team finishing higher on the log. BUT which log??

Currently the actual log looks like this:
    1.Blues
    2.Reds
    3.Crusaders
    4.Stormers
    5.Sharks
    6.Waratahs
but the playoff log looks like this:
    1.Blues
    2.Reds
    3.Stormers
    4.Crusaders
    5.Sharks
    6.Waratahs
If this were the end off the round robin section, playoff 1 would be stormers vs waratahs, playoff 2 would be crusaders vs sharks.
Assume for a moment, stormers and crusaders win, semi 1 would be blues vs stormers, semi 2 is reds vs crusaders. Assume for a second moment stormers and crusaders win, and go through to the final. Where is that final? On points alone, in a normal log situation, crusaders finished higher, and should get home ground advantage, but under the combined conference log, stormers and crusaders swap around, due to the fact that blues lead the nz log.

Currently, stormers have 43 pts, and crusaders 44. Under a normal log, crusaders would be above the stormers, but because of the blues on 47, and stormers being top sa side, they slot into 3rd spot, above crusaders.

  • @Greg (Comment 73) : After Sunday’s game Chelsea don’t deserve to win the title in anyway! The problem know is I can’t decide who to support in the CL final. I dislike most teams a lot. But think I’m going to be supporting Man Utd in the Final. Think I dislike Barcelona more! Damn Spanish!

  • @Ben (Comment 65) : The cheetahs can be very unpredictable and cause an upset but the safe money is on the Crusaders. In the case of the Reds, Blues game I would back the Reds based on home field advantage. The chiefs are also definitely capable of beating the stormers. Its going to be a tough one.

  • the Cheetahs beat the Crusaders 20 – 13 in 2009 in the States, with Nokwe & Daniller scoring tries. even then McCaw was coming back from injury (concussions i think) so history can repeat itself.

  • @Ben (Comment 74) : Unfortunately didn’t watch the game, but yeah, chelsea really needed at least a draw there, would have made it a bit tighter. They also cannot afford to slip up this weekend, arsenal and man city can both still push for 2nd spot.

  • @Megatron (Comment 78) : True but in all the other games the Crusaders raked up arround 50 points against them. My guess, its going to be a high scoring game with the Crusaders beating them with a 20 point margin…

  • @Ben (Comment 74) : Chelsea’s old toppies are moeg! they were sooo outplayed on sunday by a fired up ManYoo, i was laughable! they are so lost in the dark ages they couldn’t even change their gameplan – 94 minutes of “take it wide & pass it back” – what the hell.

bereft of creativity all over the show. even their 50 million pound substitute couldn’t do anything πŸ˜‰

  • @Ben (Comment 96) : Roman’s business advisor was the one that got Guus to coach Russia after he too South Korea to the semi-finals of WC 2002, which is why he was open to help Chelski. Guus is a great coach, worldy and had LOADS of experience. his CV is unrivalled but the question is will he dump Turkey to manage Chelsea?

what happened to Ray Wilkins, why was his “contract not renewed ” ie fired, after serving the club for soooooo many years?

roman behaves like a spoilt brat!

i pity all you Chelski fans πŸ˜€
