Stormers have backline worries

The Stormers team has been announced, and as a supporter of the hoops, there are a few concerns. Jaque Fourie(groin), Jean De Villiers(chest) and Peter Grant(ankle) have all been ruled out due to injuries. Which leaves them with a backline that hasn’t played together before and also most of the experience has been lost for what is quite a crucial game.

Ricky has managed to keep his starting spot after a decent performance in the first half and the forwards are largely unchanged from last week. Allister Coetzee has gone with a 5-2 split on the bench and one has to wonder what other options he had, as our backline has been severly depleted. We have to hope that there are no injuries to the centre’s or flyhalf in the game as there is no cover there at all, with winger Danie Poolman and scrumhalf Dewaldt Duvenage our only cover for the backline, and perhaps even Koster might need to make an appearance there if needed.

On the plus side we will get to see what young Johann Sadie is capable of in the centre’s, pairing up with last years Super 14 find Juan De Jongh (who is also struggling a little with second season syndrome, hopefully game time will help get him back on track). I’m also hoping that Schalk Burger does a better job inspiring his troops this time for as well as he played last week, the team fell apart badly in the second half and needed a little more clever thinking to pick their heads up.

Stormers team for the weekend:
15. Conrad Jantjes, 14. Gio Aplon, 13. Johann Sadie, 12. Juan de Jongh, 11. Bryan Habana, 10. Lionel Cronje, 9. Ricky Januarie, 8. Duane Vermeulen, 7. Francois Louw, 6. Schalk Burger (c), 5. Andries Bekker, 4. Rynhardt Elstadt, 3. CJ van der Linde, 2. Deon Fourie, 1. Wicus Blaauw

16. Tiaan Liebenberg, 17. Brok Harris, 18. Steven Kitshoff, 19. Anton van Zyl, 20. Dewaldt Duvenage, 21. Danie Poolman, 22. Nick Koster.

  • I’m afraid my superbru picks will be for the Blues quite comfortably now. Can’t believe all the injuries, hadn’t heard a word of JdV possibly being injured.

  • Oh joy, I see they dropped Rene Ranger to the bench… but Kaino’s back, so it kinda evens it out. DAMNIT!

  • I suppose that settles it then. I’ll be picking the blues on SB.

Was undecided, but these changes are quite influential.

  • i always liked Peter Grant but I think not being chosen for the Boks in 2008 kinda confined him to non-bok file. After he came back from Japan it almost seemed his kicks got some distance but on Saturday he just went off the boil.

  • @rekinek (Comment 16) : He should never have started on Saturday, that knee wasn’t completely healed.
