Sharks opt for continuity

Wow…. now there’s a big surprise. John Plumtree has opted to pick conservatively and has made minimal changes to his match 22 for this weekend’s game against the Bulls in Durban.

The tight five is unchanged, with Bismarck du Plessis continuing at hooker in John Smit’s absence. There was some talk that the Bok skipper might be fit enough to play off the bench this week, but he has failed to recover sufficiently from his calf injury, meaning Craig Burden will again be in the number 16 jersey. The only changes to the pack see a fit-again Jacques Botes start at openside flank in place of the suspended Keegan Daniel, while Gerhard Mostert returns to the bench in a straight swap with Anton Bresler.

Young loose forward Marcell Coetzee retains his spot in the 22 and will look forward to a run in the second half.

Amongst the backs, where one would argue that changes really needed to come, nothing has been done. Stefan Terblanche and Meyer Bosman continue at centre, with Odwa Ndungane again preferred to Lwazi Mvovo on the wing. Adi Jacobs is again in the number 21 jersey, with Mvovo coming onto the bench to replace Jacques-Louis Potgieter in 22.

The Sharks

1. Tendai Mtawarira
2. Bismarck du Plessis
3. Jannie du Plessis
4. Steven Sykes
5. Alistair Hargreaves
6. Jacques Botes
7. Jean Deysel
8. Willem Alberts
9. Charl McLeod
10. Patrick Lambie
11. JP Pietersen
12. Meyer Bosman
13. Stefan Terblanche (Captain)
14. Odwa Ndungane
15. Louis Ludik

Replacements
16. Craig Burden
17. Eugene van Staden
18. Gerhard Mostert
19. Marcell Coetzee
20. Conrad Hoffmann
21. Adrian Jacobs
22. Lwazi Mvovo

I suppose technically there are 2 changes to the pack…..didn’t van Staden run on last time as a last minute change?

  • Expect van Staden to appear around the 50 – 60 min mark, Adi around 65th min, Mostert and Mvovo at around 70, and Hoffman & Burden and Coetzee anytime from 75 mins onwards.

Sterling utilisation of the replacements bench! πŸ™„

  • Good for plum showing faith in his players . Changes do need to happen though ,adi needs a start desperately [email protected]wpw (Comment 7) : Mcleod is fine and I prefer him to Hoffman ,I get the feeling hoffman looses the ball in contact to easy, his wind up pass also not great,in my opinion. Lets be honest the only real threat on the run is wynand ,the bulls backline aint exactly hard to defend …
Wynand crashes then passes to his wing ,13 hardly sees the ball.

We really need a local referee that understands dumb rugby player mentality for this game. Bryce gets irritated to quickly and could start singing like a canary.

  • @Original Pierre (Comment 25) : It hasn’t “NOT” worked completely, now has it? We are still well in contention for a play-off spot, aren’t we? It will take a much bigger failure for Plum to start making big changes to his squad… and normally I’m right there with you guys, but if you really think about it, why would Plum take the risk now?

And even though I agree, that Stefan, Bosman, Odwa and even Charl haven’t looked like their best yet this season and have shown to be weaknesses in our team on occasion and that Adi and Mvovo could possibly fix these shortcomiings, I don’t think Plumtree is completely wrong for sticking with a team that has steadily lead the Sharks to a second spot on the South African confrence log and a 5th spot on the overall log.

I’d like to believe that this team, exactly as it is can up their game and put in a performance to take care of a Bulls side that has never looked like getting anywhere in this years tournamant, until perhaps after a few of their most recent performances.

Then again, you’d hate not to make these changes and lose a couple of games on the trot, just to evetually make these changes out of despiration and win the last few games, only to realise that it was all just a little to late.

It must be great to be a coach!

Still, I’m backing Plum and the Sharks for this one and hoping that Adi and Mvovo see at least 30min of the second half!

  • @Ice (Comment 29) : Referee questioning isn’t a problem with Stefan Terblanche, he rarely questions the referees, which bugs me a little. I don’t like whiners, but I like the captain to point out repeated infringements and foul play, so the referee will focus on that area. Stefan is too quiet at times.

  • Deysel, Alberts, Du Plessis, Mtawarira, Coetzee, Mostert – these are the weapons, but cannot be used effectively if our attack is not ranged. One dimensional rugby will cause us a problem or two. Based on the momentum these guys give you, you need Lambie to keep the opposition on the back foot with a mixture of territory and distribution to our backs – especially Ludik, JPP and Mvovo when he comes on… Adi will need to be brought in sooner to offer more creativity. I rate Odwa, but feel Mvovo needs to feature more…

I’m really hoping to see Mvovo be absolutely electric and Adi light up the midfield… They can only achieve this if they are getting the minutes. • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 43) : also used to believe that a backline without an X-factor is no good. After what the Crusaders did to us, I am now converted. A backline needs to understand playing the game at pace, giving the ball carrier more than one option, running into space and good running good lines. That’s why I’m so hard on Mcleod, if he can just give the backs quick ball, we will become a world beating team.

Maybe we would have been better of if Adi had started a few games back who knows…and I’d like to see one of our centers make a few clean breaks, I’m so desperate for one I’d almost be willing to say Plum take the risk (not that I’m saying its a risk, I just think Plum might see it as a risk), even if we do lose it might be worth it.

  • @waje (Comment 75) : the reason I never picked him there is because ryan never runs straight slot him at fullback

  • @Viking (Comment 76) : @robdylan (Comment 74) : @Poisy (Comment 73) : What I find funny and disturbing is this team could probably play better than the current one, if defence wasn’t the issue. It shows the lack of va-va-voom in our current backline.

  • @Ben (Comment 97) : Yes, we need some pace injected into the backline. As much as I like Mcleod, Hofmann needs a start to show his class and so that McCleod can catch a wake up.

  • I honestly would have liked to see the following team for the Bulls match:

    Beast
    Bissie
    Jannie
    Sykes
    Ali
    Botes
    Deysel
    Alberts
    McLeod
    Lambie
    JPP
    Bosman
    Adi
    Odders
Stef (captain, even though I hate outside backs as captains)

    Burden
    Van Staden
    Mostert
    Coetzee
    Hoffman
    JLP
    Mvovo
