Cheetahs lose Steenkamp

Cheetahs lock forward Wilhelm Steenkamp will miss out on a trip to face his old team in Pretoria this weekend. The big second-rower, who joined the SHarks on loan during last year’s Super 14 competition, will miss the rest of the season after damaging knee ligaments against the Rebels.

It’s getting to the stage of the season where attrition is starting to take its toll on all of the South African sides, with each naming major casualties after this weekend’s latest round of matches. Coaches have been loathe to tinker with their combination and the physical toll of playing 12 or more weeks of gruelling Super Rugby seems to be adding up.

The Sharks have lost Jannie du Plessis and Odwa Ndungane, the Bulls Fourie du Preez, the Lions Lionel Mapoe, the Stormers Lionel Cronje and CJ van der Linde, in addition to the injury to Steenkamp picked up by the Cheetahs. Not a great return for a single weekend’s play. Of those mentioned, only van der Linde looks likely to recover in time to play some role for his team yet this Super Rugby season.
