Sykes also in doubt as Sharks nightmare worsens

Another day, another injury – at least that’s the way it seems in Super Rugby land at the moment. Sharks coach John Plumtree confirmed at a press conference yesterday that lock forward Steven Sykes is in doubt for this weekend’s game against the Waratahs, having injured an ankle against the Bulls.

Odwa Ndungane and Jannie du Plessis are already confirmed out, with Adi Jacobs also struggling with an ankle problem. The last-named will need to undergo a late fitness test, along with Sykes, in order to be named in the lineup for this weekend, which should be announced some time tomorrow. Should Sykes cry off, it would open the door Gerhard Mostert to start, with Anton Bresler possibly coming in as cover, Bresler, along with centre Riaan Swanepoel, have both been placed on standby, but will play for Rovers in their crunch match against Collegians on Friday night if not required by the Sharks.

Plumtree made a number of vague and baffling statements regarding the loss to the Bulls and the feeling one gets from reading his comments is that he either doesn’t really know what went wrong, or does, but chooses not to share the reasons.

Speaking about the challenge now facing the Sharks, he says that “the players know we can’t afford to drop another one”. Good work, Captain Obvious… now let’s just go make it happen please!

  • surely we must start with mostert and ali at locks and i hope adi will be fit, but as i know plum will play meyer at 12 even if adi is fit. just wish plum would give adi a run at 12 for the next few games to show us what he got.

  • Heard they had a series of long meetings yesterday…. Hopefully Plum was just tired because of that, and thats why he didn’t make a big effort at the press conference….

  • Not sure that this injury weakens us to be honest. Mostert hasn’t looked the business yet, but while at the Lions he showed what he was capable of.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 6) : his injury set him back big time last year (yes that too is a bit of a Captain Obvious) – but what grated me this season was Plum’s inability to maintain a healthy squad system – all your players should be rotated to create a synergy – If your Spartans are wounded you should replace them with Spartans – not Arcadians… You know what I mean…

  • i dont want to sound like an old lady or that i`m wanting the sharks to lose(and i dont), but if we lose, the only bright light in it is that i hope Plum would then give the younger guys the chance to play. The likes of Coetzee, Williams, Lindeque, Herbst and Bresler.

  • Hope Adi pulls through; but Sykes…well he is leaving anyway, and i prefer Mostert too, has the Physicality of a 4 and is very Solid at Lineout time…really like him. Also Bresler will do well off the bench…Bresler and Mostert are our future…Love the way they play.
Clermont playing Top 14 Semi on Friday…please lose so we can get Joubert…Please.

  • Mostert is highly rated and was even included in the boks EOYT squad prior to it been finalised.
He is a good replacement for Sykes, but the sharks need to seriously consider another loosie in Keegan Daniel mould, centre in Barritt mold, fullback that can run into space, and 2 centres like juan de jongh and 1 of the juniors.
Currie Cup should be used to build a squad for 2012 Super XV

  • @chucky (Comment 16) : Yup, Mostert is a great player, we have been calling for his inclusion for a while now. Keegan Daniel Mold…we have Young Francois Kleinhans and he can actually fetch and has played 8, so we know how well he can carry and that he is mobile too. Centre in the BARRIT Mold? Dunno, our Centres after Thsi year should consist of Jacobs, Joubert, Bosman and hopefully young Jordaan also gets a go. Or we need to sign Johann Sadie or Robert Ebersohn…we will se what happens. We should win CC again this year, we have lots of Quality Depth which we always see come through during the Currie Cup.

  • @JJR (Comment 17) : YEs would like to see jordaan get a run. I think Francois kleynans will probably only get a looki in in a season or two hopefully he doesnt leave as he is a former Glenwood Boy.
Not confident about our centres but maybe a currie cup will help prepare them for next year.
I dont know what has happened to Riaan swanepoel as he was also highly rated at one point and would make the team on occassion ahead of Waylon Murray. What has happened?

  • @Ice (Comment 19) : Don’t want to sound too harsh but then he should start acting like it. His standard of play has dropped in the last 2 months or so.

  • @Ben (Comment 21) : Yes I think mentally Sykes is not there – he is drifting, his tenacity has decreased – and he no longer pumps the Sharks logo on his chest when running on… The Devil is the detail.

There is much The Sharks can do to start building, and there is much that needs to be addressed – we can only hope that it does happen.

  • @Ice (Comment 23) : @Ben (Comment 24) : I apologize to Steven for this game – but he has not done it – fans see this as and begin to wonder – you know us fans – sensationalists – passionate – generalists – and on that note – its not only Steven that needs to up his game sadly… Come on SHARKS!

  • @Ben (Comment 24) : Ag tog… 🙄 I meant he touch his heart/Sharks on his jersey when he come through the tunnel.

DD – because I also know he does this – I alway watch him do it – and I can assure you ALL the games I have managed to watch this year of the Sharks he did do it. I think it’s unfair of people to say that he does not give a damn about the Sharks anymore…he loves the Sharks. Unfortunately, like a lot of others he has to make career choices – I am 100% sure that his dream is to play fr the Boks, but he realised that he will not get a chance and he is not getting younger. So if he is a bit despondent – I dont blame him – but it has nothing to do with the Sharks Team.

  • Adi is not a 12, he showed it again on Saturday and the couple of times he started at 12 for the Boks he was poor as well. Adi is a superb 13, unfortunately he has had to step aside at 13 for Stef as captain. Bottom line is we will not see the best of Adi until he gets an extended run at 13, not at 12. We have 3 12s in our squad in Bosman, JLP and Swannie, let’s use them appropriately not force players into positions they are not best suited. We have to remember that there is very little similarity between the centre positions like in the past. Nowadays, 10 and 12 are more similar, the NZers have it right with first 5/8th and second 5/8th and only one centre.
