TWG13 replaces TWFG13

The Stormers team for the Brumbies clash has been announced and with just the minor hiccup of Peter Grant still being slightly injured and Allister Coetzee possibly needing to rush him back from injury(again), its still looking alright.

The biggest debate in the build up to the team announcement is what to do with the centre’s after a brilliant showing from Juan de Jongh and TWFG13 and Allister has decided to give Jean de Villiers a little more opportunity to rest while bringing back the backline defensive (and attacking) mastermind that is Jaque Fourie. Peter Grant has been bracketed with Kurt Coleman pending a late fitness test before Captain’s run. Other changes see Duvenhage given back the reigns at scrumhalf, and Duane Vermeulen is finally given a well deserved “rest” (even though he’s still on the bench) which gives Bishops prodigy Nick Koster a chance to show his skills.

oh… CJ van der Linde is injured which might have an impact at scrum time… a POSITIVE impact.

15. Conrad Jantjes 14. Gio Aplon 13. Jaque Fourie 12. Juan de Jongh 11. Bryan Habana 10. Peter Grant (Kurt Coleman) 9. Dewaldt Duvenage 8. Nick Koster 7. Francois Louw 6. Schalk Burger (C) 5. Andries Bekker 4. Rynhardt Elstadt 3. Brok Harris 2. Deon Fourie 1. Wicus Blaauw

Reserves: 16. Tiaan Liebenberg 17. Steven Kitshoff 18. Anton Van Zyl 19. Duane Vermeulen 20. Ricky Januarie 21. Jean de Villiers 22. Johann Sadie

Or do they really rate Coleman?

  • @Richard Ferguson (Comment 7) : I think Coleman was our Vodacom Cup cover so he knows the structures. Whereas Catrikilis only played one game for us there (the first one we lost). Coleman has had a few minutes here and there off the bench, so he is our best 4th option.

Don’t think we can rely on Duvenhage to pull off the same miracles 2 weeks in a row.

Kinda hoping that Grant gets fit so that he can play as much as possible over the next month..

Fullback is something they need to focus on with Conrad getting a bit on in years – how many more seasons do you think he will be around?

He has the potential – Richard Kahui is awesome – no doubt.

Everyone so often talks around BoD, possibly coz he’s past his prime but in terms of still active players, if you could somehow roll back the clock and still have all of them playing at their very best then o’Driscoll is without question TWFGGGG13 still playing followed by Stirling Mortlock, Tana Umaga and then probably Gavin Henson ahead of the likes of Nonu, De Villiers, Jauzion, C Smith, Fourie and Jorie Muller if he’s still playing

BoD, Tana, Stirling and Fourie are all really great centre’s. Henson’s mouth ruined any chance of him trying to live up to the hype. I’m not a fan of Nonu, he’s just big and that’s about it.

  • @molly (Comment 46) : I think Nonu has been unfairly labelled for the best part of his career and over-criticised as well. Yes there was a time when he was selfish and opportunities around him went a-begging but he worked hard to change that. Heโ€™s played and sustained outstanding form for long periods and produced moments of sheer individual brilliance that just about all of the other centres we label as greats are incapable of mimicking.

I remember watching the 6 nations championship when he came to prominence and how excited I was about his potential midfield partnership with BoD for that 2005 Lions tour. But after that 6N, I don’t ever remember him playing well again. Even now my most vivid memory of him is that of a broken player limping off the field.

  • Ok this is totally unrelated and not even the sport mentioned above. I’m not one for conspiracy theories, but this IPL stinks of corruption. Shane Warne was right. Example, how can they decide to change the pitch to suit the opposition teams. The pitch order came from the BCCI. Shocking.

I called this about 6weeks ago. The Mumbai Indians will play Chennai Super Kings in the Final. The prefect Captain
Dhoni vs Captain Tendulkar. Huge marketing spin of.

He still relies mostly on barging through tackles, and then there’s the yellow cards that follow him around. He’s good and I would probably have loved if he played for the Stormers/Boks, but he doesn’t really bring that something special the others bring. I’m having a hard time thinking of the brilliant things he’s done, but I have a short term memory, I’ll youtube him quickly.

Remember Dries Scholtz partner in crime when they won the Currie Cup for the first time under Meyer. I think his name was Tiaan Joubert. He got off about 3 passes the whole season and won the Currie Cup. That’s the stuff legends are made of. Then there are guys like Hendrik Meyer, who Rassie bought for the Vrystaat and our own Rudi Keil. I think its WPW whose often spoken very highly of one Frikkie Welsh.

The season seems to be having a knockon effect so Westville will definitely lift their game just like College did. That will be good news. More ball in the hands of Tyler and Keegan hopefully. But KES are good so no illusions tho. Basically Jackson stands in midfield a lot of the time and rushes the centres. He’s small (1.70m, 85kg) so he has to go low, but boy can he tackle and his targets go down hard. Let me try and upload something on youtube for you. I’m working towards the weekend roundup. Just need more sources to come thru for me. Hope you’re going to Saturday’s game.

  • @Big Fish (Comment 65) : rudi played for us towards the end of last year, when you see him warm up you’d be led to thinking ‘geez this dude is lekker fast’ – this is what went thru my head.

then he got on the field and was nowhere…

The sharks can have him back.

You have my sympathies for having had to suffer through that.

I’m sure he is a great guy off the field, but I’d take Oupa at 40 over him any day!

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 73) : he played for College Rovers the bulk of the season & we ONLY called him back when our team was ravaged by injuries during the playoffs…he didn’t play for us in the Vodacom cup

Rudi used to wear these gloves when he played. I was like: dude, if those things improve performance, you need to wear a full-body suit.

Seemed a decent guy though. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

  • I see this has turned into a “name the worst Sharks centre” thread. While slightly off topic, I feel compelled to remind you guys of a signing which, as a monument to the follies of the Sharks’ recruitment department, towers over all others like the Burj Khalifa over a camel herder’s hut… *drum roll*… Dean Hall!

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 85) : As fas as wasting money is concerned, Mr. Hall ticked all the boxes for me: over-rated? – check; one-dimensional? – check; injury-prone? – check; past his prime at time of purchase? – check…

  • @Culling Song (Comment 86) : Yep – no arguments there – didn’t we get a combo deal with Gcobani Bobo – who at that stage of purchase was a mental wreck after his injuries – yes we Sharks know how to buy and sell thats for sure… Blimey!

  • I am glad sanity has indeed prevailed and Ali Coetzee is not risking Peter Grant. I really appreciate a coach who backs his setup and gives his youth a shot. Take a bow Ali Coetzee – at this moment in time you are the SA flagship team – make us proud – go all the way… I wish that we backed our youngsters more back at the tank – Our backline really needs some new faces in the centres…

  • Poor Dean Hall. His shortcoming was his injury-proneness. He was special when he came on the scene for Transvaal. Would not make my list coz he’s been there and done that. I’d be more inclined to put a guy like Andries Strauss on the list, who I used to refer to as the “Nearly Man” coz everything he did never quite came off until the very very end of his Sharks career.

  • @DarkDestroyer (Comment 88) : I read last night that he won’t risk Grant unless he’s 100%, but I’m quite sure he wasn’t 100% against the Chiefs, he should ideally be coming back for 20min, not a whole game.
But AC has done very well with the youngsters this year, the same can’t be said for the past.
