John Plumtree has decided to finally drop Charl McLeod for the match against the Waratahs this weekend. Conrad Hoffmann will finally start a game in the scrumhalf position after playing all his games from the bench so far this season.

John Smit is back in the front row to captain the side, taking over from the Beast Mtawarira at loosehead, while Eugnen van Staden is in the tighthead jersey. In the loosies we see a Sharks team without Alberts for the first time this season, with Keegan Daniel back after his suspension to play from the base.

In the last change, Lwazi Mvovo is back in the starting line up as a result of the injury to Odwa Ndungane. The reserves bench sees the return of Jacques-Louis Potgieter and Riaan Swanepoel as Adi Jacobs has not been considered due to injury.

The team:

1. John Smit (Captain)
2. Bismarck du Plessis
3. Eugene van Staden
4. Steven Sykes
5. Alistair Hargreaves
6. Jacques Botes
7. Jean Deysel
8. Keegan Daniel
9. Conrad Hoffmann
10. Patrick Lambie
11. Lwazi Mvovo
12. Meyer Bosman
13. Stefan Terblanche
14. JP Pietersen
15. Louis Ludik

Replacements

16. Tendai Mtawarira
17. Wiehahn Herbst
18. Gerhard Mostert
19. Willem Alberts
20. Charl McLeod
21. Jacques-Louis Potgieter
22. Riaan Swanepoel

  • The Tah’s have the best scrum in Aus…..playing Smit at loosehead is a HUGE gamble IMO.

I’m glad Hoffmann is getting a start!

  • Stef should have been benched and I would have been a happier chapy. Also would not have minded to see Moster in the starting 15.

If one of our wings get injured will Stef go to wing? Or JLP? I would love to see McLOed as the reserve wing. It worked for hougard and sarel? Or maybe Hoffman can do a better job as back up wing.

  • This was the ideal time for Plum to show faith in a young up and coming centre.

He is too conservative and that is why the Sharks won’t be serious contenders in SR.

  • this week i won’t be negative about the selections. just hope everything works out for the sharks. just think that our pack is a little weak to dominate the tahs, but who knows. the one positive thing about the loosies is that they will make more tackles if the backs slips a few. botes and daniel scramble really well and get a lot of work done. come on sharks make us proud!!!!!!

I guess I would like to give Sarel a chance at tri nations to see what he can do but would rather want to play Pienaar at WC.

  • @Viking (Comment 26) : Yeah no doubt Pienaar is the better SH. Our wings looks like its going to be Habana, Basson and JP. Pienaar would be the reserve SH. But know PDV he would take Hougaard as more wing cover and as a 3rd SH. Just hope he gives Sarel an Opportunity as well. Its going to be a good battle this weekend against those two.

  • Some real positives: Mvovo and Hoffman starting (although Hoffman should have gotten longer starts off the bench rather than freshly starting behind a recently whipped pack).

Not so happy about the centre pairing and Smit at 1 (although he needs to start – maybe at 2). Locks also need to step up – Mostert must have come close to starting.

  • @Pokkel (Comment 49) : the exact reason why Bissie has to start. He will be our “extra loose forward”. When Bissie gets benched, and when Smit goes to hooker and Beast comes on, to keep the balance in the loose forwards Mostert needs to come on as well. Or bring Alberts on and replace Botes, but Alberts in overplayed and IMO should only be played if there’s an injury or something.

That is exactly why I’m worried because you can’t compare the Lions pack to the Tah’s pack. You’re loosies are also a lot lighter so that weakens the scrum even more. If the scrum goes backwards and Hoffmann has a bad game…who do you blame?

  • @theswan4 (Comment 71) : Alberts and McCleod should have been rested weeks ago, nothing new there. Keegan’s best position has been at 8. He is even a lineout option at 8, winning several lineouts last season in the CC. In my opinion, 8 is Keegan’s best position because he does not play to the ground as an opensider, he is not a threat to steal opposition ball.

As for the lineouts, as much as I think the world of John Smit, the lineouts have not been any better with him throwing in. In fact the problem has little to do with the thrower in my opinion. The problem is that the lifters are not doing their job, and the timing of the jumpers is just off. The timing is so poor that even a ball to the front jumper is not a guarantee. We need a lot of work on lineouts, but the throw ins are not the problem in my opinion.

    That would have included me..

But he has had a terrible run of form..

Maybe he just needs a break and need to see that there is competition in his position..

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 78) : I’m afraid that McLeod has become too full of himself. Last year, he was new in the starting team and I think he concentrated on doing the basics very well, getting to the breakdowns, and making a quick and snappy pass from the base. I think his Bok selection went to his head a bit, because this year he is slow getting to the breakdown, he is taking two or three steps toward his first receiver before passing. I believe that he is thinking too much about what to do instead of just getting there and making a good pass. Now he picks up the ball, and while deciding whether to break or pass, he takes a few steps toward his receiver. He still has the talent to play like he did last year, in my opinion, he needs a mental adjustment. I think he should be benched properly, told he is being benched because of his play and told to work on the basics again.

  • @VinChainSaw (Comment 78) : I think a lot of people did not think that it would be his first super rugby game. he was very good last year cc – but I don’t think he was ever viewed in the same category as ruan, fransie tor lambie.

  • @Dancing Bear (Comment 83) : I don’t want to belittle anybody but this bok squad for Baas Baas game was not the best. I felt that Pdivvy went a bit on a jersey give-away spree. I wouldn’t have picked Daniel or Mc Leod for Boks even though I value them immensely as Sharks players.

  • @rekinek (Comment 95) : @Richard Ferguson (Comment 97) : They don’t get a cap but they are called Springboks from then on in. One big confusing set-up. Rather just say that you are a Bok when you have a cap. Elton Jantjies are being referred to as a Springbok but he has 0 caps.

  • I know I am entering the discussions late – but I think this team can do it… I think they will beat The Waratahs this weekend. I am not expecting champagne rugby, I am expecting an ugly win – The Sharks are in too much pain to not step up to the plate.

  • With the resources that the sharks have at their disposal changes that can be made are limited.

I like the changes that Plumtree has made with hoffman @ scrummie and keegan at 8th man. Daniels will give us [email protected] which has been missing.

I personally don’t think our centers are as bad as everyone makes them out to be. We have a lack of pace @ 13 and thats killing us, We have managed to make a number of linebreaks but havn’t managed to finish! [email protected] 13 might solve that? No solution stands out at the moment!

I think our biggest issue has been at lock. I think sykes has been poor this year compared to last year and I also don’t think we are committing enough numbers to the rucks. Yes we end up with 5 players everytime but no’s 3-5 are afterthoughts that are trying to prevent the ball being stolen! Sort this out and I think 6/8 will have more time to run with the backs which will improve our attack and 7 will get better faster more crashball close to the fringes.

I would also like to see some imagination in the back 3. An up and under from Ludick as opposed to running it back everytime might cause opposition teams to think.

Possibly in the second half, move lambie to 12 and have JPL in at 10. Now before you crusify me consider the following… JLP to alternate on attack and defense. I think JPL kicks better out of hand than Lambie and the extra 10 or 20 meters we gain might be enough to score some tries

  • Oh and I like our bench for the weekend … I think beast, mostert and alberts will be enough to unsettle the waratahs.

John and Sykes and Dysel off after 60 minutes

OK. I’ve considered it. Can I crucify you now?
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again… the dynamic created at the start of the season when JLP came on from the bench for 10 minutes or so as outside (I think) centre, playing with Lambie at FH, opened up new and hitherto unfathomable possibilities…
So as long as NO-ONE thinks that JLP should pull on the No 10 shirt again (as long as he lives) then I am cool with it!

  • @Ben (Comment 104) : If you’ve been selected for the squad, you are therefore a Bok. You may have 0 caps, but you have still been selected. That’s why Lambie was Michaelhouse’s first Bok before he even left the country for the EOYT.
I agree it’s a bit bonkers, especially where Jantjies is concerned. And anyone else who doesn’t get a cap but gets selected. πŸ™
